The Mine (DANGER ZONE)

At the top right of the town is the mine. Previously the economic center of the island, a disastrous collapse of the main mineshaft left an undeniable scar on the community. The fallout of the disaster led to many families slowly moving away to find other work or to get away from the pain of the past. Now the main mine buildings sit behind a rusted metal gate and chain-link fence topped with barbed wire. The old wooden buildings of the mine remain, never having been torn down after the mine closed its doors, but their structures are all warped and broken. The entrance to the mine can still be seen, but it is inaccessible due to a combination of debris and being intentionally sealed up with a heavy wooden barrier.

  • The Foreman’s Office (DANGER ZONE)
The foreman's office is a free-standing building raised up a story above the ground, a design that allowed the foreman to see all the goings on of the mine from the balcony that ran along the side of the office. On the inside, the office itself is rather bare. A desk sits in the middle of the room with three chairs lying fallen around it, and a filing cabinet lies on its side in one corner of the room. An ornate wooden cabinet containing some old cigars and a bottle of whiskey, along with some faded and partly-rotten papers that may have once been employee paperwork, also sits against one wall.

  • Workers' Changing Room (DANGER ZONE)
Off to one side of the mine away from the former entrance and the foreman's office is a small windowless building that served as the changing room for the workers, where they would start and end their day. The changing room itself features a locker room area with lockers lining the walls and benches situated in the center. Also in the center, hanging from a set of pulleys that run along the ceiling of the room, hang articles of the miners' work clothes, boots, and helmets. These discarded clothes create an uncanny atmosphere within the room, especially at night, while also serving to obscure vision as the pulley wires have started to sag with age. Also in the building is a communal shower area.

  • Mineral Processing (DANGER ZONE)
Following the official closure of the mine, the biggest building in the area was left to rust. The interior, once a hub of activity, now sits as a maze of conveyor belts, pipes, stairs, and walkways that allowed people to traverse the building. There is a main gangway that stretches from one end of the building to the other and many other paths that branch off of it, typically taking one up or down a set of stairs and onto another walkway. A few of the windows within this building have also cracked and broken as a result of the building starting to fall in on itself, leading to snow being visible on some of the pathways, making fast movement a potentially hazardous affair.
