Janelle Barber

Post by Sticks »

Name: Janelle Barber
Gender: Female
Age: 18
Grade: 12th
School: John Endecott Memorial Academy
Hobbies and Interests: Dating, parties, hunting, fashion

Appearance: At 5’5 and 120 lbs, Janelle cuts a slim figure. She is Caucasian, with a naturally pale complexion that is supplanted by a light tan due to regular visits to the tanning booth. Her skin is well-maintained thanks to a rigorous beauty regimen, and remains free of acne. Janelle has a button nose that is slightly too wide for her tastes, as well as straight white teeth. Her shoulder-length hair is naturally a dull dark brown, but she regularly dyes it a light blonde. Janelle has wide and round gray eyes. Her face is somewhat wide and triangle-shaped, with full cheeks.

Clothing-wise, Janelle goes for color and fit above all, oftentimes skirting the boundaries of what’s considered appropriate in a school setting, as she enjoys wearing low-cut tops and short skirts. She loves to wear bright and cool tones, favoring blues and purples. She often coordinates her makeup alongside this, and Janelle is rarely seen outside her house with anything less than a face full of makeup, to compensate for what she feels are overly youthful features.

On the day of the trip, Janelle was wearing a turquoise v-neck sweater with a white strapless camisole underneath, a teal ruffled skirt ending halfway to the knee, black leggings, and ankle-length brown combat boots. She had worn her hair in two short pigtails tied with a white hair tie each. She was also wearing a key-shaped locket. In terms of her makeup, she was wearing blush to match her skin tone, pink lipstick, foundation, eyeliner, light blue eyeshadow, and mascara. Her nails were painted purple.

Biography: Janelle was born the youngest of three children to Matthew and Catherine Barber (nee Duvall) in Valdosta, Georgia. Highschool sweethearts and homecoming court royalty turned married parents of three, the Barbers led a fairly average middle-class lifestyle, with Matthew being the head manager of the local PetSmart shop and Catherine a homemaker.

As both the youngest child and the only daughter after her brothers Dean and Lucas, who are three and seven years older than her respectively, Janelle was babied and pampered from a young age, especially by her father. Matthew had pushed for a third child, much to Catherine’s consternation, in hopes that their third would be a daughter, and so he was overjoyed when Janelle was born. Having been utterly devoted to his career in the earlier years of his marriage, Matthew hoped to build a stronger relationship with his youngest child to make up for the distance he felt between himself and his two sons.

Much of Janelle’s early life was spent as the apple of her father’s eye, and she found herself flourishing under the attention. While not particularly academically inclined, her easygoing nature meant she was never short of friends. However, when she didn’t get along with a classmate, she rarely declined an opportunity to make such known, making her an occasionally divisive figure. Additionally, the fact that so much of their father’s attention was placed on her was the source of a minor rift between Janelle and her two older brothers. The fact that they both were quite introverted whereas she loved to talk presented another obstacle in their bonding as siblings.

It was when Janelle was 6 that Matthew received an offer to become an Area Manager for PetSmart and with it received a hefty increase in salary. However, the catch was that the position had only opened up because PetSmart was looking to expand in the Salem area, meaning that the Barbers would have to move. After much discussion, Catherine agreed, and so the Barbers moved to Salem.

With Matthew’s new job, the Barbers found themselves living a generally more prosperous existence than they were used to back in Valdosta. Still, Matthew and Catherine attempted to ensure their family remained grounded and tried not to be too conspicuous in their consumption.

Although they already knew Janelle to be a social child, Matthew and Catherine signed her up for a variety of activities ranging from gymnastics to ballet in an effort to ensure she was well-socialized. None of these ended up sticking, with Janelle often being infatuated with one activity for a month or so before abandoning it completely, but the one that stuck longest was ballet; she enjoyed the grace inherent in it.

By the time she reached middle school, Janelle had established herself as a relatively popular student, who enjoyed trading in the hottest gossip of the day and discussing the latest trends. While she didn’t go out of her way to interact with those not in that social circle, she mainly tried to be her same bubbly self with them if she was assigned to work with others on group projects and the like.

With this group of friends, she discovered fashion. With her mother generally focusing on making sure Janelle’s clothes were clean and ironed rather than what brand they were, Janelle was relatively ambivalent about clothing until introduced to shopping by her friends. While her taste in clothes remains somewhat more casual and less high-end in comparison to her more fashion-conscious trends, she enjoys reading through magazines and window-shopping to see what’s currently popular.

It was when she was 12 that Janelle was introduced to hunting. Matthew had been an avid hunter back in Georgia, but both Dean and Lucas were ambivalent at best about the prospect. When she was taken on a trip to hunt deer, Janelle found herself enjoying if not appreciating the experience, both as a way to spend time with her father and a way to get some space for herself to breathe. This has become especially relevant as Matthew’s working hours have increased once more after the pandemic, with him being rumored to be up for another major promotion.

Entering John Endecott, Janelle quickly made friends with the popular crowd once more, and quickly found herself introduced to the world of parties. While her mother was far stricter in terms of allowing Janelle to go out at night, Janelle used her closeness to her father to circumvent such restrictions by asking him for permission instead. At such gatherings, Janelle is as boisterous and playful as always and is known to be a fairly heavy drinker. This has in times gotten her into arguments, but on the whole she is a welcome presence. Within her family, Janelle's parents and Lucas know of her drinking, having discovered when she came back heavily drunk after a party early into her sophomore year. Catherine was furious about this, while Matthew tried to calm her down, arguing that it was only by experiencing this that Janelle would learn to better control her alcohol consumption, as they'd seen with Lucas. Since then, Janelle has toned down her drinking slightly, although it remains a point of contention between she and her mother. Lucas does his best to caution Janelle on overdrinking when they talk, while Dean doesn't have much knowledge about the situation due to the sparseness of their interaction.

To go along with this, Janelle joined the cheerleading squad as many of her friends were as well, although she quickly tired of the training and work that had to be put in. As such, Janelle spent her free time working on other things, like boys. While Janelle first started dating only because all her friends were doing it too, she quickly found that she enjoyed being taken out on dates and being given attention. As such, she is a fairly casual flirt around school, who is rarely if ever single. She has become known for getting her boyfriends to buy her expensive things. In general, most of her boyfriends tend to be relatively popular, although she has made exceptions in the past. Most of her relationships start bright and fizzle out quickly, mainly because she gets bored or discovers a personality incompatibility she hadn’t really thought about. Still, most of her breakups have been relatively amicable, with Janelle perceived as a fun, if unreliable girlfriend.

Janelle’s reputation at school is generally quite positive, with her being a regular invite to most parties and someone who is known to be able to bring levity to situations. Her bluntness along with her relatively long string of ex-boyfriends has given her a degree of notoriety, but for the most part she is liked. Her grades are middling to average, although they have improved in the past two years at the behest of her parents, who found both their sons to be far more studious. Janelle is a solid B student, who occasionally gets As in more concrete subjects like math and Cs in subjects like English, as she can struggle with more abstract reasoning.

With her family, Janelle has remained the baby of the bunch. Her relationship with her mother has remained distant but friendly, with Catherine becoming more and more hands-off as Janelle has grown older. Janelle and her father remain quite close, with their hunting trips an opportunity to catch up on what’s happening with the other’s life. Meanwhile, after graduating from Georgia Tech, Dean is currently working in Atlanta, which means that their already slim interactions with each other have dwindled to holiday visits and the occasional Skype call with the whole family. Janelle is slightly closer to Lucas, who is currently a student at Boston College. While they don’t have much in the way of common interests, Lucas attempts to give Janelle advice from time to time on school and life, most of which she takes with a smile and promptly ignores.

As for her post-high school plans, Janelle’s ideas are vague and indistinct. While she harbors dreams of becoming a celebrity in some way, she isn’t particularly willing to do the work to make such happen. Instead, she’s applied to various colleges, particularly those known for strong party scenes, in an attempt to stave off having to focus on what she wants to do in life.

Advantages: Generally easygoing and popular, Janelle has fostered a wide variety of connections across the student body, giving her a large network of potential allies. Thanks to her hunting trips with her father, she is a decent shot with a rifle.
Disadvantages: While usually friendly, Janelle’s sometimes brutal candor has alienated a fair number of fellow students. Her general flightiness means others may be loath to ally with her or may consider her expendable.

Hello! This is a solid and quite complete profile. I have a couple small questions before we can move you along.

What's her eye shape?

"oftentimes skirting the boundaries of what’s considered appropriate in a school setting."

- In what way are they nearly not school appropriate?

- Matthew's workplace is written as Petsmart but should be PetSmart throughout

- Do her parents or siblings know about her heavy drinking? If so, how do they react to it?

And that's it! Post when edits are done, and I'll have another look.
