Glow Up

Chiara Masina Oneshot (Day 3)

Located on the second floor of The Quarters building, the sleeping quarters themselves were periodically updated throughout the operating life of the station. Initially simple rooms with a bed, desk, and end-table, the contents were improved upon over the years, though most personal touches have been removed. Each of the rooms comes off the main corridor that runs down the center of the floor and are roughly five square meters in size. The rooms all contain a single bed frame topped with a moldy mattress, a thin wooden desk with a basic plastic seated chair, and a full-length mirror hanging off the wall. The floor and the rooms themselves are all covered in a layer of dust and debris from the years of abandonment and there is a noticeable draft of cold air that flows through the floor whenever it is windy.

Chiara remained curled up on the rotted bed in the sleeping quarter. After she amputate Derek's finger, the two of them decided to take some time apart to mentally recover from what happened. They made sure to check in with one another in between, but otherwise, they passed through the second day in peace. Even now, on Day 3, they were keeping this distance from one another.

There were more names on the announcement, one of whom sounded like the girl who died in front of Chiara and Derek. Her name was Zhijuan. It was a beautiful name. But it was crushing Chiara to know it. She was never really close enough to anyone at school, nor did she really try to be close. She could be sad about Zhijuan's death, but would anyone be sad about hers? Derek might, but would anyone else here if they found her?

Chiara rubbed her face and groaned. When she looked at her sleeve, she realized she had wiped some of her makeup off on it. That gave her a bit of pause, but then she remembered. She hadn't taken her makeup off at all since she woke up on the island. All the crying, sweating, and panicking had probably messed her appearance up a bit.

Well, she had nothing better to do, so she decided to clean up a bit.

Chiara went through her bag and found her makeup bag. She sat near an end table and laid out her items. She pulled out a small hand mirror and looked at her face. Her skin was a bit irritated, not to mention her eye makeup was running and smudged all over. She let out a long exhale.

She pulled one of the makeup wipes out of her bag and began to remove the makeup, peeling off her false eyelashes. The mole above her lip disappeared. She continued to wipe until she was suitably bare faced. She stared at her reflection in the mirror, trying to think what she could do. Once she had an idea, she got to work, sifting through her makeup bag.

Chiara laid out a few items. The makeup pencils she knew she had packed before were gone, but she still had some foundation, powder, lipstick, colored eyeshadow, and some liquid liner. She got to work. She used a light red eyeshadow on her eyes, blending it out. She used the liquid liner to paint a cat eye on once she finished. After that, she painted one some red blush and red lipstick. Once she was done, she looked at her reflection. It was fairly simple compared to what she was used to, and switching to red was maybe only slightly different from what she came to the island with.

But it was fine with her. She wanted to look like she was blood stained without blood on her. Chiara sighed and closed her eyes. It was fun to take some time to put makeup on, but now was time to return to reality.

Chiara packed her makeup up back in her bag. It was about time to check in on Derek again.
