Wind in the Willow

Making up most of the northern part of the island, the woods are deep and dark. Spreading second-growth trees, mainly fir and pine, block much of the light from reaching to the ferny undergrowth. Moss hangs thick from the branches, testament to the dank and moisture-laden air, while the occasional deer path shows that many animals still make this forest their home. These woods are those on the inland part of the island’s eastern side, and slowly angle upwards towards the island’s central mountain.

Jake's hands wrapped around the warm, gritty, rough surface of his weapon. The weapon that seemed to almost smile smugly at him, as if it was trying to convince him to do something stupid just to save it.

He darted back into the bush, faster than he darted out, cinderblock tucked under his arm. Did they see me? God, I hope they didn't see me. FUUUUUUUU-

He looked back at the tree. They didn't see him.

Hm.

It looked like they were all too focused on one person in particular to notice an internet prankster clomping around in his giant boots just down the stream. Lucky son of a bitch, he was!

Am I hearing things?

He shrugged. A thought for another day, when his head wasn't trying to pound loud enough to cause a tsunami in Asia. He checked to make sure the coast was clear, that nobody was trying to sneak up behind him and take his head off with hedge clippers, then bolted as fast as he could without falling over and vomiting.

She felt so wonderful, even briefly. Joshua seemed to believe her, and right on queue, the others started to react to the little whispers she put out. The goth girl, Anna, suggested taking him down to the water to "wake him up". Course, Aston didn't know how that would work. Thing was, she only worked at an animal shelter, recognised a few little things here and there. If someone could probably work out every little thing she couldn't manage, then...she could probably get the group out of this!

...what the hell? Was she...was she about to become a leader here? Nah, that couldn't be her, she was way too good to be stuck with these guys until...wait, could she?

Well, didn't have time to make that decision, really, since Rachel, certified nutball, decided she was going to start her stupid religious ramblings. It made absolutely no sense. Aston knew fuck-all about Christianity, but what she did know was that it wasn't whatever Rachel fucking Gettys was rambling on about. Wasn't it supposed to be about being nice people? She'd never fit in there regardless, but still, what the hell happened to the girl's head to make her think like that?

Oh, also, the bitch wanted her crowbar back.

Everyone muttered, or even said something. Anna stuck by her suggestion. Michelle supported it. Michelle wanted her weapon back. Ben was being an idiot. The boy who thought he was so clever and couldn't be seen in the background scurried away like a rat. And Joshua...well, he was being rather helpful.

He was speaking to her, Rachel, getting down on her level. Escape plan, really, they had none, but they did have something more than she had. They had...

Well, she had a gun.

Catching Joshua's eye, she nodded slightly and returned the wink quickly.

"Okay, so...you, and you," Aston pointed to Anna and Michelle "You get Marty here downstream so we can...wake him up, yeah. Oh, if he does wake up, you can give him some bread as well," leaning down, but still keeping Rachel in her line of sight, she retrieved a portion of bread and kept it in view for Rachel to see. No point in making her think they were gonna try something. No matter how armed they were, she was still as crazy as a loon, so keeping her unawares was focal.

She also needed to be unaware of the long, metal bar that she slid across the damp grass towards Michelle. That was something she knew would be paramount in making sure this all turned out okayer than okay. If Michelle tried anything - again - then Aston could just stop her right then and there.

Turning to the Australian boy, she still kept Rachel in the slimmest part of her peripheral vision, but spoke only to him.

"Okay, so-"

Her hand slipped to her side.

"-you know first aid, do you not?"

A brief flick towards their enemy.

"You should probably go with them-"

The index twirled around in a circle. 4 times.

"-make sure they're okay-"

A small vertical slicing motion. Back. Forth. 3 times.

"-and make sure the guy doesn't do anything crazy if...when, he wakes up."

A small flicker of a grin.

Turning back to Rachel now, she placed her hands on her hips.

"And, yeah, my friend-" Aston's voice broke momentarily there. Friend? Yeahno. "-is right. We kinda already have something planned, so if you don't mind, we'll...be working on that! Yeah!" Aston...smiled.

Okay, never doing that again.

This was something much better than her original plan. Stay and hold her off? She didn't really have much faith in how smart her allies were if she didn't think that they were capable of reacting to danger. They were...helpful, to say the least.

Rachel proceeded to ramble on about escaping and saving people and defending herself. Wait, so she knew a way off? Rachel Gettys, the meaniehead religious freak, knew how to escape?

... Nope. Apparently "leaving the island" translates to "going to Heaven".

As Rachel rambled on, Chase couldn't help but silently make the sign of the cross over her chest. If she was God, she would be having a conniption fit over this, right now. Seriously. By the sound of things, she had been going around preaching to people and killing them if they didn't listen to her. Go figure.

To make matters worse, Ben let Alex tag along apparently. He let Rasputin, someone who she had personally witnessed eviscerating someone with a chainsaw, come follow them. He said that he made him lose it, but that still didn't mean that he wasn't going to find another way to kill someone. He could steal a weapon or something. Heck, he looked like the type to able to break someone's neck with his bare hands, tiny little girls especially.

Oh, and to add a cherry to this oh-so-charming sundae?

Ben didn't realize what the hell Rachel was talking about. He thought that she genuinely had an escape plan, like SADD or whatever was that thing that Jon had told her about once. She didn't. She meant "saving them from their horrible, sin-filled lives". She didn't flat out say it, but the subtext, that little implication, was there. But what if Rachel had something planned to them to genuinely escape? Well, better safe than sorry, right?

Better safe than...

Chase put both hands to her face, and started trembling again. Oh god, she was screwed, wasn't she? Screwed screwed screwed to hell and back. It didn't help that she was still tired and hungry, as well.

Well, thankfully, Retro-Guy and Spiky-Head were taking care of things. Retro-Guy said that they already had an escape plan in mind, and Spiky-Head started telling them to take Marty downstream and wake him up. As she moved her hands away, she saw her pull out a piece of bread. Bread... oh god. Even though it looked stale, to Chase it looked like a medieval feast. Her mouth started to water at the very sight of it. It had indeed been a while since she had eaten, and for a few seconds her stomach started to lightly growl, as if in anticipation of the bread. It was Marty's though, apparently, which meant she couldn't have it.

Everyone was in agreement that they do the water thing, though, even if only in an attempt to get away from Rachel. Spiky-Head started to give instructions to Ben, telling him that he should go with them and make sure nothing happens. Looking closely, Chase noticed she was gesturing towards Rachael, as if trying to tell him that she was out of her gourd.

As dyed hair girl started to approach Marty, Chase stepped forward. "Uh... here. Lemme help you get him."

With that, she attempted to lift Marty up. Oh god, he was heavy! Sure, he wasn't as big as some of the other boys at Bayview, but he was still bigger than her, like most of the people she knew. Combined with the bag still on her shoulder, and needless to say, things were difficult. After a bit of fumbling, she could at least get him off the ground by hoisting his arm over her shoulders, allowing her to carry his weight a little easier. Even with that, though, she was going to need help, as she was probably going to drop him or literally drag him around, which was in no way going to help his condition. Hopefully dyed hair girl wasn't just going to leave her to carrying him around like this.

It was funny, wasn't it? Even with all the insanity around them, even as Chase thought they were maniacs, they were working together to not be killed by Rachel and to make sure Marty was alright. This was a major change compared to the beach, obviously. And of course, she simply wasn't crying and freaking out as much, and was actually doing something for once.

Michelle wanted to say something to Rachel Gettys when she was going though her speech, but she was 100% certain that cursing out the other girl and calling her insane wouldn't lead to anything good. The whole thing about saving them reeked with self- importance and she didn't believe for a second that Rachel had ever truly acted in self-defense. It was possible, of course. She couldn't rule that Rachel really was a well-meaning young girl who had killed two people out of self-defense, but...that go to Heaven thing? No way. Uh uh. Everyone knew there were only two ways off of this island. Win the game or die trying. And the way Rachel mentioned Heaven made Michelle think that Rachel was considering the latter way of transporting everyone off.

'No thanks. I want to keep living and win. I'm just doing a horribly bad job at it so far. She thought wryly to herself. She hoped that the others were just as skeptical about the whole saving thing and mostly everyone didn't seem to buy into her act except for...one of the newcomers. Well, she wasn't going to tell him he was being an idiot for believing Rachel for the same reason she didn't just call Rachel an idiot. If he wanted to buy into it, then that was fine. His life was in his own hands.

Aston took charge of the situation, quickly assigning her and Anna to carry Marty downstream so they could attempt to wake him up. She didn't care about that. What she did care about was the fact that Aston was actually giving her back the crowbar. 'Yes, yes, yes. I have my weapon back. It's not a gun, but I have it. Perfect. Step one in this variable step plan complete. Perfect...still, better not make any dangerous moves. This whole thing is already dangerous enough. Just have to wait for a better time...'

"Yeah, sure." She replied, walking towards Marty. She lightly toed the crowbar across the ground as she did, making sure to have hit the middle of it as she did so. She slid it along slowly until it was next to Marty's legs and she bent down to grab both of his legs...along with the crowbar, which held close against his pants. Michelle hoped the whole thing passed by unnoticed by Rachel. 'Please don't see it, please don't see it.'

The other girl, Anna, took the other end and Michelle gave her a quick nod. "All right. Let's get him over there."

T'was refreshing to hear the words of respect emanating from the mouths of those gathered here, though it was clearly out of fear rather than a genuine fondness for Rachel's words. Let them think her crazy. Rachel was not crazy, and their attempts to avoid her would only hasten their own demise. Were they not stricken by fear, they perhaps may have seen that they were safest in her presence. After all, as she was invincible for the next two days, no harm would befall her or her followers. Such was the brilliant nature of prophecy, that those whom the prophecies mentioned could not logically perish until the time of their prophecy came to pass. Rachel could see that, so why had blindness descended upon them all?

Well, most of them, anyway. Though it was hard to discern whether or not he seriously meant his words, Ben Powell had expressed interest in hearing more of what Rachel had to say. Ignoring the furtive actions of the others, as they could not harm her no matter what they would do, she spoke directly to Ben and stated, "If you would wish to know more, follow me, and I will show you the way. As for the rest of you-" she swept them with a patronizing smirk, "-you are free to go about your business howsoever you please, but you cannot outrun the Lord's judgment. In two days, something wondrous will happen, and I fear that if you are not on His side...well, I do not know. Perhaps you shall have to see it firsthand."

As she was about to leave, she said to the group at large, "Stay alive, and may His blessings fall upon you." She only halfway meant it though. So far as she was concerned, the Lord could drop fire on top of every arrogant head assembled here. Perhaps double fire for some of them, though a single fireball would probably be enough. Hobbling off, she called backwards, "Stay or leave, Powell. It is time to decide on your path." What she needed was a weapon of some kind, a means by which she could force others to see her point of view. Speaking simply and calmly was insufficient, it seemed, and with the deadline imposed upon her, she had no time for delays caused by those who were unwilling to see the truth.

Well, so far so good. Rachel wasn't trying to bash their brains in JUST yet. Which considering her kill count and mental state was probably a good sign...

Only problem now was that Joshua didn't really know what to do next.

Thankfully though, Aston seemed to have a much better grip on the situation then he did, ordering Michelle and Anne to take Marty downstream and away from Little Miss Wacko without even breaking a sweat. He would have objected to having his best friend moved without his permission if it wasn't for the fact that, well, to be honest he totally agreed with her. Plus, given the circumstances complaining over something as trivial as that would be a LITTLE stupid...

Man, wish I could order people around like that...

However, as his two companions picked his friend up, Rachel as it seemed decided to leave on her own accord anyway. After telling them that something wondrous(?) was about to happen in a couple of days first of course...

"Stay alive, and may His blessings fall upon you."

"Uh, yeah, seeya!" Joshua replied, waving goodbye to the disappearing figure of Rachel Gettys in the distance. Just smile and wave Josh... Just smile and wave.

.....Okay, she's gone.

"Phew! Man, that was a close one huh?" he said, wiping a bead of sweat from his forehead as he did so.

"I'm... Guessing this means we don't have to move Marty then? I mean, the occasional nutball aside, I kinda like it he-"

Uuugh...

The would-be rocker stopped mid-sentence, his heartbeat freezing as his ears picked up the undeniable noise of someone groaning. A weak, painful groan at that. Not wasting any time, his eyes quickly darted about the area for the cause of this noise, his crossbow pistol raised in case of some ambush. Aw crap, not again! Who is it this time?!? What if it's Sarah Atwell? Or that British dude Maxwell? Or... Oh god, what if it's a zombie! Holy shit, what if theres zombies on the island!?!

Wait, zombies don't exist... Right? Besides, that noise came from Marty's directio....

.............................................................

.....Marty? Is that...

Sure enough, the source of the groaning noise came from none other then his close friend and compadre Marty, who at that very moment was slowly but surely awaking from unconsciousness....

"Marty? MARTY!"

Joshua dropped his gun onto the floor as he rushed over to his friend's side, a wide and hopeful smile appearing on his face as tears began to swell in his eyes.

For the first time since he'd arrived, Joshua was beginning to feel lucky again.

And then...she was gone.

Aston couldn't help but let out a small sigh of relief at the departure of her first crazy encounter. Part of her, a little bit inside, just wished Rachel had stayed behind and attempted to kill them. It would have given her a good excuse to use her gun, a bit of excitement here and there. It would have been even more great if she'd even had to chance to do so without risking her life.

Oh well, she could wish all she wanted, but the fact remained...she did a good job.

If she said so herself, she thought that the two of them did a pretty good job of taking care of a perfectly dangerous threat to their lives.

At least Joshua seemed pretty certain that they did a good job. While he seemed content on celebrating, Aston was perfectly content on watch and making sure that Rachel was fully out of their line of sight before she broke open her metaphorical champagne. She watched, she waited as Joshua spoke, and...bam, gone.

Aston tried to smile, but really couldn't find the motivation to. She just realised, as Joshua lumbered over to his friend, that there was an unmistakable look of despair on that Ben Powell guy's face.

Swallowing, not really sure what to say, Aston just spoke what she thought.

"Look, I really dunno what you've been through, but trust me when I say that nothing good's gonna come from you following her. If you can't tell already, she's...she's gone, man, she's not making any sense. She's not gonna save you, she's not gonna be able to get you out of here, so, don't even think about it, okay?"

Fuck tact, she was just being practical. Glancing around at the scene unfolding beside her, she smirked, picked up Joshua's gun, and walked over to the scene as she left the Powell boy to decide what he wanted to decide. If he left, fuck him. If he stayed, he'd be of some use where she wasn't.

Walking around the group, she stopped behind the girl who now held her crowbar back again. Not even trying to beat around the bush with her, she pushed the tip of the gun into her back and whispered quietly to her only.

"She's gone now. Give back the crowbar. If you did so without making a scene, that would be great."

Well, that was easy.

Rachel just calmly walked off, once again spouting some crazy religious nonsense of some kind. Saying that there was some kind of prophecy that was to be fulfilled in two days, and talking like some cliched anime or video game character. Maybe one who ran around with a sword, slicing and dicing into everything in her path, while praying to some evil god that needed sacrifices, human ones, the flesh and blood of man! She would then be killed by the hero and sacrificed to her own god.

Nah, that wasn't going to happen. This wasn't a video game, though she wished it was. Wished.

The other girl had grabbed Marty's legs, causing Chase to almost drop him and to rearrange how exactly she held him, so that two people could grab both ends. If there was one thing she did not want to do right now, it was to drop him. One, as noted it wouldn't help him at all. Second, that Retro-Guy might freak out if his friend was hurt again. She would too if- if-

Don't think about that. Don't think about them.

Marty's buddy started to comment that they should probably put him down since Rachel was gone now. Chase was about to respond, but suddenly a loud groan came out of nowhere. A quick glance down told her it was coming from Marty, and that he was starting to become more aware. He was awake? Or rather, just starting to?

A sad smile passed onto her face as his friend rushed to his side, tears on his face. It was good to see that Marty was just starting to wake up, and that he had a friend nearby. It was good indeed. And yet... it once again reminded Chase of her friends. She didn't want to think about it. She just didn't want to. And yet it came up in her mind every once in a while. She... kind of missed them already.

Within a few seconds, though, Chase snapped out of it.

"Hey... we should put him d-down so he doesn't think we're like... trying to rape him or something...." she said to the other girl holding him up.

And that's when it hit her.

That girl with the spiky hair gave it back to the girl with dyed hair.

The crowbar. She had it again.

Chase couldn't help but get worried again. Heck, worried? She knew what her having the crowbar meant. She saw everything. Every little thing on the beach. And just how that girl had attacked Marty just so he would stay silent. Chase had to admit, she did agree with her on some levels, but hurting Marty in a way that could kill him wasn't the way to go. They could have easily talked it over or something. And yet, she hurt Marty. He could die this way if they weren't careful.

Spiky-Head went on to ask for it back, after telling Ben not to follow Rachel. Now, Chase remembered her little rant about her gun and how they all lost their chance. So, either way, either one of them having it meant they were screwed. Either way, some potentially dangerous would have it.

And that's when it hit her.

"Hey... uh... girl with the pinkish hair? I... I c-could hold on to it for you and uh... Spiky-Head! Yeah! I could keep it on me for you t-two and then... uh... I'm n-not a player, trust me", she said.

And then all of a sudden, Ben felt very wrong-footed.

How desperate are you?
I thought she was not that bad, a bit on the religious side-
Stop seeing the good in people and start seeing the fucked up part of them.
I don't want to do that, everyone's good-
You're a goddamn idiot. Sarah, Reiko, Clio, Max, they're not good anymore.
Reiko's still good.
Six kills.
Really?
I'm your brain. I've been counting every death off, telling you that the person who owned the locker three to your left just died, that the person that you borrowed that pen off of killed again. Get it together, man.
She said there was a way off the island.
She was lying. She doesn't know a way off this island except pulling the trigger on yourself and going to the next world. That's what she was on about.

"...thanks mate, Aston, whatever."

Slapping himself, he quickly tried to turn around and look at the scene before realising an important truth: he had no fucking idea what the hell was going on after all. Some guy was dying and being raped- no wait, that was... goddamnit, STOP BEING MUDDLED BRAIN. Stop trying to do two things at once. Whatever. Anyway, he got out a few bandages and started to think. Or rather, tried to think. His mind was more like mush than the usual quick self, and he still had this slight tripped up feeling, as though he had made the wrong decision.

"OK. Tell me what's injured again, and I'll fix it to the best of my ability."

He could still be useful.
Couldn't he?

'Whoa, she's just leaving? Not going to do anything dangerous? ...Phew, that's good.' Michelle thought to herself, breathing a sigh of relief. Her relief was short-lived, however, as she felt the prod of a gun against her back and then that bitch Aston telling her to drop the crowbar. Michelle bit her bottom lip to restrain an angry scream, swearing to herself that she would rub Aston's life out with her own hands through whatever means. Not like she could do it now without getting shot multiple times, though. 'Not again...that little bitch. I'm going to kill her...I swear, I'm going to find some way to do it no matter what happens.'

She did what she was told though, dropping the crowbar to the ground where it landed with a soft thump. "There, happy?"

'Oh, and look, the whining kid is awake again. Well goodie for him.' She thought bitterly as Marty began groaning. Anna suggested that they should just put him back on the ground and Michelle was perfectly fine with that idea. Her mood had plummeted to an all-time low and with an irritated grumble, she somewhat gently placed her end of Marty on the ground.

'This is the worst...fuck it...crowbar or not, I'm getting out of here. If this keeps up, I'm not going to get anywhere.' She thought angrily to herself, shifting in place a bit. She turned to face Aston, a scowl on her face. "Go on, go get it."

Darkness...

Thats all he could see at that moment in time. Well, for the past couple of hours to be exact.

At least, as far as he could remember, there was nothing but darkness. From all Marty knew, he could have been dreaming the whole time. Well, if he HAD been dreaming, he certainly didn't remember a single thing about it.

Come to think of it, he couldn't really remember much at that moment in time, as his eyes slowly opened and the world around him seemed to be nothing more then a dizzy faze. All he could think of right there and then was the fact that was currently experiencing the worst headache he'd ever had in his entire life. It was as if the back of his head had literally cracked open like an egg, spilling all its contents all over the floor behind him.

...Okay, that's an image I know i'm going to regret coming up with.

Thankfully, the back of his head hadn't been split open. It was bruised and somewhat battered, yes, but apart from that it was more-or-less intact. Didn't make his splitting headache any less painful though...

His blurry vision slowly cleared over time, as did his hearing. He could vaguely make out shapes and voice now. There were several people standing around him, talking to one another. He couldn't tell who (or what?) they were, but he guessed that they might of been talking about him. Well, possibly talking about him. Its not as if he was the centre of attention or anything... Then again, the fact that he couldn't remember the past couple of hours didn't help matters.

The last thing he could recall was lying back in his pink tent after going for a whizz for the thirteenth time in a row. Other then that, it was all a complete blurr. Had he fallen asleep or something? Is that it? Because it felt like he'd been asleep for a HELL of a long time then. He certainly didn't remember going to sleep anyway... He remembered being very awake before his memory cut off.

Besides, one thing he was aware of right now was the fact that his tent was missing. And that there was some greenish blob above him cutting his view from the sun. And that he wasn't lying on a sandy beach anymore... The evidence was pretty damn conclusive of the fact that he'd been moved without himself even realising it.

What the heck happened? Did he sleepwalk into the middle of the woods or something? Did a bunch of people kidnap him whilst he was still asleep? Was he... dead?

No, he definitely wasn't dead. Dead people as far as Marty was aware of didn't have headaches...

His vision and hearing cleared up a bit more now. He could tell that he was underneath a tree of some description, and that the people around him were talking about... something. He couldn't tell quite yet. He recognized some of the voices though. There was Michelle, saying something about being happy. He could tell Ben Powell's voice from his Australian accent. And there was also...

...Wait, was that?

No way, surely...

"J... Joshua?"

His friend, who at that very moment was by his side, couldn't have been more relieved.

"Marty! Oh man, I knew you would pull through in the end!"

"Josh? Whu... What happened? Where are we?"

"Oh god... Don't tell me you've got amnesia! Oh shit, I was afraid of this happening! Look, my name is Joshua Krakowski. And YOUR name is Marty J. Lovett. We're friends, okay! We were..."

"I don't have amnesia Josh. At least, not severe amnesia anyway..."

The shorter boy slowly helped himself up, only to fall back onto his backside again. He was awake, that enough was clear. But he was far from stable enough to stand on his own two feet again.

"Last thing I remember, I was laying back in my tent waiting for the next announce..."

Then it all came back to him.

The island. The announcements. The gunfire. Jimmy freaking out in front of him. He remembered then where he was and what was going on around them.

And the fact that his best friend Joshua was standing right in front of him finally hit.

"Joshua... You're okay!"

That was more then a big enough cue for the taller boy to wrap his arms around Marty and give him a friendly bear hug, nearly choking his best friend after their prolonged absence.

"Oh man, I never thought we'd ever see each other again! I-I mean, after Daniel died, I almost lost all hope y'know? But now... Oh Marty!"

"Hey hey, its cool... Its cool... Now, uh, would you mind letting go of me for a second. I think you're slowly choking me to death."

The would-be-rocker let go almost immediately, his face going red when he realised that everyone had been watching them the whole time. Jesus, I hope they don't get the wrong idea or anything...

"So, uh, how's your head?"

"It hurts like a bitch... No idea what the hell happened."

At that moment, Marty turned his head to observe the others surrounding them. He couldn't recognize any of them from before... At least, he didn't recognize them just yet. Temporary memory loss wasn't exactly a permanent side effect, hence the term "temporary". What it did mean however was that at that moment in time, he had no clue why these people were around him. Or why he was here in the middle of the woods.

Or what happened to his god-damn tent!

Still, Joshua seemed to trust these people, so Marty didn't have much reason to worry just yet.

"Uh, hey. Um, anyone care to explain why I've got this throbbing headache? Or even better, how the heck I got here?"

Hahahahawhat?

Alright, so the boy down there had amnesia or something along those lines.

...okay.

That was both a contrived thing and a good thing. Exploding in someone's face was honest-to-whoever a great thing to have forgotten about you, as far as embarrassments and stupidity went in hindsight, but really, just how much was this guy gonna forget? He was knocked unconscious, that meant brain damage full-stop.

But what was on the foremost of Aston's mind right now was that, if the boy wasn't bullshitting them and really did have some sort of amnesia, it was all about making sure she worded everything she said to him right. Temporary amnesia, all the stuff you saw on TV, that stuff was, well, only temporary. If what she said next wasn't technically a lie, then there was nothing to hold against her.

Unless he asked what happened to his tent. Like that would ever happen though.

However, priorities.

Michelle, the girl in front of her who probably hated her guts more than anyone else on the island at this very moment (not that Aston particularly cared) had relinquished her temporary weapon. As the whole scene between the two boys played out in her vicinity, she leant down to pick it up, still keeping her newly acquired (borrowed, though; no matter what she was still only carrying a mini bow and arrow) weapon honed on Michelle, the goth girl, Anna something or other, made a particularly peculiar enquiry regarding the crowbar.

Wait, SHE wanted to have it? The little goth girl who would probably get bowled over by a gentle breeze wanted to play with the big girls? Really, it was a terrible idea in theory, and this time right now was probably the most fucked-up time to try and experiment for practicality.

Instead of responding right away, Aston instead took the crowbar into her fingertips and curled themselves comfortably around the metal bar. As the scene between the two boys drew to it's denouement, Aston piped up with a well-timed throat-clearing.

"Okay, just so I don't waste anyone's time, I'll just summarise what happened before after I met you, cause I think I was the first one out of these guys to do that," Aston said, as she slipped the crowbar into her other hand.

First, she pointed to herself.

"I found you on the beach."

Then she pointed to Superbitch, aka Michelle.

"Then she came along."

Her fingers whipped around towards Anna.

"Then she came along."

Back towards Marty himself.

"You freaked out."

Her fingers sat judgingly (and yes, that was totally a word), back pointing at herself.

"I," Aston swallowed "Freaked out a bit."

She pointed towards Superbitch (hey, that was a nice name after all) one more time.

"She almost killed you with a fucking crowbar," Aston held up her stolen weapon for proof, before yanking it out of view again.

"And then, your friend here came along and stopped her from doing any more damage."

A vague circle motion was spun, encompassing the entire group...except the Australian boy.

"We all came to stop around here. People came, like this Australian guy, and then you woke up. The End. Oh, also, goth girl, catch" Aston said, and just like that the crowbar was tossed across the group towards Anna, landing at her feet.

"Just keep your little hands on it, don't want anything unpleasant to happen," Aston snidely remarked, before turning towards Superbitch, "Do we?"

"Guys, the speakers!"

As they screamed into life, Ben's blood ran cold as the list of the fallen grew. This was a nightmare. And... Alex was down. Damn it. He actually thought he would be OK, and he was...

Giving a grunt, he listened to the dangerzones and blanched. Inland Woods.

"...what side of the woods are we on?"

Beep.

"Fuck."

Running to his backpack, he shoved it on roughly. "Chase, I'm leaving." Leaving for what?
You want to hunt them down, don't you.
No, I don't.
Yes. You do. You want them to feel pain.
NO!

"Shit. Chase, I... I think I need to be alone. I can't protect you. You'll be safe with these guys."

Can't protect anyone.
You can.

Blinking, he started to run up the creek, away from it all.

So, she and the dyed hair girl put Marty down.

Within minutes, he had brought himself to the world of awareness. It seemed like a hard struggle at first, but soon his eyes were open and he was trying to say something. Retro Guy- Joshua Krakowski apparently, god why did it take this long to learn his name- immediately reacted with relief that Marty was awake. He seemed confused, but he was starting to get a bit better, right? He seemed to not know where he was or what happened, but the girl with the spiky hair- or rather, the distant remains of spiky hair by this point- explained it to him. Lord knew that she and the strawberries and cream girl were going to go into another spat about who sucks and who doesn't.

However, she ended her speech by referring to her as "goth girl" and throwing something at her feet. Chase yelped as she jumped back in shock, the object falling several inches from her feet with a thud. Wait, that was the crowbar, wasn't it? Sliding the bag finally off her shoulder, she bent over to pick it up. As she lifted her upper body back up, she hugged the crowbar like it was a teddy, a huge grin on her face. Yes! Finally! She had a weapon! She could defend herself now! And now that she had a weapon, she could do all sorts of things. What could you do with a crowbar, though? Go crowbar hunting? Just find that bear and jump it, bashing its brains out like a pinata? Man, that would be badass, wouldn't it? A tiny little girl, beating a bear to death with a crowbar and only a crowbar! Or maybe a deer! Deer should sit long enough to be hunted! That's all they did! That was their purpose in life! They were food, not friends or Bambi or anything like that! Their biological purpose was to be prey! That's the point of them being part of the eco-system!

But, her dreams of crowbar hunting were cut to a stop as she realized Marty was still there, and although he was awake, he was still probably in bad enough shape to need help. Crouching down to get a look at him, she stared. Simply stared. What could she say here? "I got the crowbar"? "Are you feeling alright"? "How does it feel to be here-" NO. Don't even try that one.

Before she could come up with something, the loudspeakers cracked to life once more. She could feel a chill going up and down her spine as it screeched, and suddenly, she was on her back, having fallen with crowbar and all. Lifting herself into a sitting position, she felt as if her heart was about to leap out and cause mayhem of its own.

Names were listed once more. At first she couldn't recognize any of the names, until...

She couldn't believe it.

What the fuck.

What the hell.

Him too?

But... but... Dawne wanted him to live, right? It was a given. She would have wanted him to live and go on and... and... and...

Not be lying somewhere because some mute shit-faced asshole beat him to death.

Chase suddenly stood up, and quickly realized just how unsteady she was feeling. The announcement continued on, but Chase wasn't able to pay attention to it. It was just a jumble of words at this point.

"-made Chris Carlson the star-"

"-orth tried to strangle herself or something, but she put a lit-"

"-Then Raidon Naoko went ahead and shot Alison Walworth and Madison Stone in rapid succ-"

"-After a day of inactivity, Rei-"

Only fragments. That was the only thing she could get. Everything was just a blur. That's all it was. Her head was spinning. Was she dizzy? She put her one free hand to her head to steady herself as she closed her eyes. She must be dizzy, she had only been drinking water sporadically and from the stream which had lots of nasty things in it but was the only option she had right now, and she hadn't eaten much in a while. And with all that walking, of course she would be feeling a little off! It was simple! Simple, right?

Lifting her hand away and opening her eyes, she could see a group of people nearby her. Who were they? Why were they here? They didn't look familiar for a few seconds. Wait, they met at the beach, right? Chase squinted behind her glasses as the announcement ended and she could hear one of them ask a question about the woods in an Australian accent.

Beep.

Beep.

Beep.

What the hell was that?

The Australian boy ran up to her and started speaking. Ben! That was his name! She remembered now! But... he was leaving...?

Just leaving the group, or...?

It hit her. They were in a dangerzone. She had managed to avoid ending up being in one before, but the beeping was coming from their collars, and that wasn't a good sign. They had to get out of here, now.

But Ben... Ben... he was leaving the group. Not just the area, the group. He had to be alone, he had to be away from the group, he couldn't do anything to protect her, or maybe Marty. He was just going to run off like that.

And suddenly, Chase snapped out of her stupor.

"Ben!" she yelled at his back. "Don't leave us! DON'T LEAVE US TO-"

The collar continued to beep. Ben was gone.

"... Don't leave me..." she murmured quietly.

Shit, was she crying? Her eyes felt wet again.

But she had to get out of here. Lifting her bag over her shoulder, she addressed the rest of the group.

"We... we have to get out of here. Let's... just get a move on, okay?"

And suddenly, Chase bolted for it, hoping that the others would make it out okay. Why did she care about them so much? Why was she crying over Ben? They were just people. People attacked each other. Like they did.

Maybe because it was her only option right now to stay with them.

"I found you on the beach."

Ahuh...

"Then she came along."

I see...

"Then she came along."

Yeah... But that doesn't explain how I go here, does it?

"You freaked out."

......Ah.

"I... Freaked out a bit."

I think I can see where this is going...

"She almost killed you with a fucking crowbar, and then, your friend here came along and stopped her from doing any more damage."

Well... As much as Marty hated to admit it, freaking out at the first sign of life sounded like exactly the kind of thing he'd do in this kind of situation. That along with the fact that Aston's story explained why he had such a killer headache led him to believe that she was probably telling the truth

"Shit... Guess I ought to thank you for not finishing the job." he said, attempting something of a joke despite his grievous condition. "Now you mention it, I think I vaguely remember something about a trio of girls all talking at once... I dunno, maybe it'll come back to me later or something. Uh, sorry about freaking out and stuff..."

The boy with short hair turned his head as he felt Joshua's firm grip on his shoulder, the would-be rocker giving him a friendly shake. "Hey, its cool man. You don't have to worry about a thing now. These are good people... They stopped some psychobitch from converting us into her weird Christian-knockoff suicide cult thingey earlier. I'm sure we'll all be-"

Suddenly, and without warning, the speakers all across the island suddenly burst into life and began to list out the dead once more. 25 this time... Way more then Josh was particularly comfortable with. The deal with Liz Polaski getting a bunch of kids killed was bad enough without the fact that many more were being killed anyway through more traditional methods.

Damn, poor guys... Shit, R.J. killed another person?!? God, I hope that was out of self defence. It'd be terrible if it turned out that R.J. had turned into just another psych......

"After a day of inactivity, Reiko Ishida returned to her two-a-day program, shooting Rizzo Vitoria and then strangling Carol Burke...."

...Oh shit.

Slowly, Joshua turned back to his friend. Of all the people that had been announced, Joshua knew for a fact that Carol in particular would be one which would hurt Marty more than any of the others. Marty had a crush on Carol after all, and considering the fact that the last time either of them saw one another was back at the prom...

Sure enough, at that moment in time Marty just sat silently there with a shocked look in his eyes. He didn't take note of what was happening around him, or who was talking, or anything. He couldn't honestly care less. At that moment in time, Marty could only think of one thing...

Carol... No, bullshit. Total bullshit. This... No way. I must be hearing things! She's not dead damnit! She can't be dead! She can't be...

He barely registered the slow beeping on his collar. Or the fact that Joshua was tugging on his arm repeatedly. It wasn't until the taller boy literally dragged him to his feet by his collar that he took notice of him at all.

"Damnit Marty, we've gotta get out of here NOW! I'm sorry about Carol, but we can't do anything about it! Now c'mon, lets get the hell out of here!"

Without even waiting for an answer, Joshua dragged Marty along with him as he ran in Anna's direction. Marty scrambled along, not even acknowledging where he was heading. Or thinking about what he was doing as he trudged alongside Joshua.

Quite frankly, if it wasn't for Joshua's intervention he might of been happy to just sit and wait for the danger-zone to finish him off.

Carol...
