Let Your Whole Body Talk

Miss Fame struts her stuff

There are many areas at the Salem Willows park for recreational activities such as social gatherings or picnics, including gazebos and a small stage. In addition, those wanting to be active can jog along the park's trails and walkways or play at any of the basketball courts, tennis courts, and a miniature golf course. A miniature amusement park called 'Kiddieland' serves as a striking visual centerpiece for the park, complete with the original carousel from 1880 and several smaller rides meant for young children only - the ideal distraction for anybody who has to bring their younger sibling with them on an outing.

"I, uh,"

One hand shielding the screen from Ruth's view, Erika scrolled through more pictures of everything from animal cross-sections to photographs of total strangers to one or two ~tasteful nudes for figure painting, because honestly at this point her phone was about fifty percent of her entire life at this point, it's the only thing that's truly and totally her's without being exposed to anybody else's judgements and almost everything about what she was, her art and her photos and her poems and her entire life is stored in this password protected box in strings of zeroes and ones, and, um, you know what it's probably better for her to go to one of her sideblogs instead.

"Here's a fluffy cow," she announced.

"And here's the reference.

Erika felt like she just bared her entire soul, holy shit, almost nobody in real life really knew her like this. She hated it when she had to show her work to people just on the fly, because any art that she felt like was presentable to her was always the product of either meticulous planning and work and draft after draft, and these are the sort of art that she often had to explain to people because otherwise they'd thought it was weird.

But maybe Ruth was more accepting.

"So I'm just trying to practice certain backgrounds and landscapes, because I think I've been drawing a lot of animals and people recently, and, well, I think my background skills have degraded a bit. But mostly I don't really have a preference. I'm just trying to do a lot of studies, because, well, I mean I already sent most of my portfolios but still... Do you have any of yours to show?"

Ruth let out a high-pitched squeal when the picture of a fluffy cow greeted her on Erika's phone.

"Oooooooooh mahgod! That's adorable, where did you take that?" she asked. Without waiting for an answer, Ruth continued with excitement building in her voice. Like a boulder rolling down a hill, the tempo of her speech increased with each word as her passion showed. "I always wondered if we'd get a cow and like if it'd like, look like that one but if any of us gets one it's gotta be one of my brothers because like my hands are already full with the girls you know? And cows are like, a whoooole lot of work and we already have all the goats in the barn, like, there's just no room for a cow and like, we already get the milk from the goats?"

She paused to take a breath. It was a short breath.

"And like that's really good, too! The painting. The landscapes are good but it always pops more when it's like, something that's alive but I don't wanna like cramp your style or anything." Ruth had her phone out and was rummaging through her albums. "Here, I can give this to you and you can like look through and stuff and I can take yours."

"T-thanks."

Erika physically recoiled from the girl's sheer enthusiasm. It was like a smother aura, forcing itself into her lungs. She felt so different from Ruth, in about a million ways. Maybe if she had her brothers, dad wouldn't have focused on her. She's only ever had dogs. If she brought a cow home dad would probably yell at her. Or eat it. Or both. She didn't know, she's learned not to bring living animals home after that incident with the snake.

"But I need to, um..."

click click swipe click-

"Most of my phone's filled with junk, so here's the blog that I put some of my art in," she said, which was kind of a lie because nothing in her phone is truly junk, not when she's sorted through the thousands of screenshots one by one multiple times now, just to make out space. Every image in there meant something to her. The girl wouldn't understand, though. Most people wouldn't.

"Here!"

"Here's the tumblr."

Ruth completed the phone exchange and was greeted with a Tumblr blog full of the promised art. Ruth immediately took note of the name and made a mental note to try and come back to it later on her own phone, or on her laptop or something, just so long as she went back and took a more thorough browse through the gallery. Every good artist knew 90% of the struggle was finding inspiration, and nothing inspired quite like looking at somebody else's stuff.

Still looking at Erika's phone and refusing to lift her eyes, Ruth blindly handed out her own phone in an upturned open palm. "Here, you can look through my photos. I put stuff on my Insta or Twitter - I don't know too many people who use Tumblr anymore. You know, ever since the porn thing. Now everybody's on Twitter and like, you follow a few not-work-safe accounts because there's artistic stuff, yeah? Like, that's not oversharing is it- ooooh, I like this one. And this one. Lots of cool stuff here."

Swipe swipe swipe, scroll scroll scroll.

"Okay, I get the idea! You should do like... life, more. I think you could have a real knack for that stuff. Not that the landscapes aren't okay, but if you're gonna do that then you wanna go like, stylized after a while? Shoot, I sound like... critical. I like your stuff, really!" Ruth decided to just shut up and hand the phone back before she said anything worse.

But before she did... she couldn't resist. She had to check, so turning the phone up a bit so Erika couldn't see, she quickly opened the phone's gallery to see. DID Erika take a picture of her?

((hey))

((give it back))

Erika looked at Ruth's art as much as she looked at the girl herself.

"No, it's fine- I like it when people are critical, really. It's, um, you know how people kind of go 'oh it's so good oh wow' when you show them art and ask them to critique it? And then they just hugbox you."

She better not be looking at anything weird on her phone.

Ruth, fellow artist and animal enthusiast, would hopefully understand. After all, anyone who unabashedly walks their chicken is-

wait.

Where's Miss Fame again? She wanted to pet her.

Ruth smiled and nodded as she selected the photo taken of her from behind and clicked the trash can icon.

"Right? Total hugbox, like- I get you. I've been there, it's wicked annoying. Just like... tell me what you really think?" Satisfied, she handed the phone back to Erika in exchange for her own. She smiled just a little bit harder to try and fight the inner frown at having found that picture in the first place, especially since she asked SPECIFICALLY if she'd taken a picture, and then she said no, and then there it was. Ruth could forgive it, one time, since she was in a good mood. That said, her patience and good mood tank were coming up a little short since there was only so much interaction she could-. Ruth stopped the thought midway through as all that occupied her mind in that moment was Miss Fame, who was surely getting tired of being away from the coop as well, and Ruth only took her girls away with the understanding she needed to be mindful of their stress.

"Oh, shoot, this ate up most of my time..." Ruth looked back to the carrier where she'd left her beloved hen. "Well, most of Miss Fame's time. She gets cranky and we only have so much, with like... travel time here and back and all, that I should probably get her back to her other girls." Ruth straightened up and held out a hand, palm up, doing her best Ru Paul impression: "Bring me my girls.... right?" she asked with a giggle, not so much as awaiting a response before scooting over to the cage.

"Shshshsh, I'm sorry baby! Let's get you home. Extra treats for you for being such a good girl today, okay?" Ruth was still cooing to her as she threw a blind wave in Erika's direction, heading back down the path.

((Ruth Flanagan, off to some other misadventures elsewhere))

"Goodbye!"

Erika did the faintest, most low-effort wave as the girl left.

...

wait...

"Where's my photo?"
