Name: Olive Mayo
Gender: Female
Age: 18
Grade: 12
School: John Endecott Memorial Academy
Hobbies and Interests: First Aid and Medicine, radio controlled cars, cryptozoology
Appearance: At 5'8" and 130lbs, Olive has a tall, slender build. She has a narrow face, with a button nose, round eyes under thin eyebrows, downward-turned lips, and narrow ears. She wears her straight hair loose, and it falls to her mid-back. Her eyes are light brown, and her hair is dark brown. Olive is moderately nearsighted, and wears oversized round glasses with silver frames.
Olive dresses in a lightly eccentric style. She favors clothes that are easy to move around in or suitable to the weather, more often wearing pants than skirts and tending towards t-shirts. On the day of the abduction, Olive was wearing purple sweat pants under black snow pants, a black t-shirt with a red box on the front with "Delay No More" written on it in white text alongside a white flower, and an unzipped light grey hoodie with an image of a flying saucer abducting sheep on the back, as well as black sneakers and white socks. She paired this with dangling earrings featuring the classic green alien face.
Olive is Caucasian, and she is lightly tanned. Her ears are pierced one apiece, in the lobes, and she has no tattoos. She has a two-inch scar on the right side of her midriff from an appendectomy when she was fourteen. She stands fairly straight, and tends to tilt her head to the left when observing or listening to someone talk.
Biography: Olive was born in Salem on November 1, 2003, to father Kenneth and mother Cheryl Mayo. Kenneth was a moderately successful real estate agent, and Cheryl was a masseuse, and together they managed a reasonably middle-class lifestyle. Olive arrived three years after her sister, Debra-Agnes, and was unplanned; her sister was named after two great grandmothers, and Olive was originally set to be named Olive-Mildred by the same scheme. While Cheryl's parents initially objected to their own parents' names being used that way, feeling that such old-fashioned names would negatively impact a child, after some discussion they partially relented, and Olive was given her name, chosen as the less archaic of the pair.
As a baby, Olive was very attached to her mother and sister especially, and also to her maternal grandparents, the Grahams, who also lived in Salem. While Olive was socialized in twice-a-week meetings of a playgroup consisting of a handful of other children around her age, this formed the bulk of her exposure to the world outside her family; Cheryl had at one point wanted to be a teacher and decided to homeschool her daughters, something she was able to manage with the help of her parents, thanks to her career offering a lot of flexibility. Olive and her sister were thus educated by their family, and especially their mother, for most of their early years.
While Olive loved this arrangement, her sister soon chafed under the constant parental attention. By the time Debra-Agnes was of middle school age, she felt thoroughly isolated and was regularly acting out, refusing to do work or actively resisting her lessons. After many discussions both within the family and with the school district overseeing the homeschooling, the Mayos decided to put her into public middle school beginning in seventh grade. This proved much better for her, and it was decided that Olive would also join the public education system come middle school, despite her personal trepidation about the matter.
The transition to a public middle school was extremely difficult for Olive. While she had regular interactions during her homeschooled years in the form of group activities with other homeschooled students, the continuous presence of others made her nervous, and she was not used to broader group dynamics. She was also not used to typical school disciplinary structures and grading systems, often speaking out of turn and becoming very upset when criticism was delivered less gently than she was used to from her parents. There was some talk of returning her to homeschooling, but ultimately Olive's parents decided that her struggles just made it more obvious that she needed additional exposure to succeed in the world after school.
While Olive did eventually stabilize and learn how to function in the school system, she never really figured out how to fit in. Her outbursts and unusual behavior drew the attention of her classmates, and she was considered strange and sometimes made fun of. In an attempt to better her position, Olive tried to attach herself to others, but often had trouble understanding when she was being made fun of, and proved very easy to manipulate, deceive, or push around, so long as this request was couched in vaguely positive terms. To this day, Olive often "helps" classmates with their homework and does far more than her share on group projects, even for the benefit of peers she isn't close to, so long as they act like they really need the assistance.
Olive's high school years were better than her middle school experience, but still had moments of turbulence. Towards the end of her freshman year, she suffered from a bout of appendicitis, and needed her appendix removed, spending several days in the hospital. Over the following summer, she had her tonsils removed due to infection. When the pandemic hit, Olive was one of the few who actually flourished; the return to learning primarily from the comfort of her own home was very welcome for her, and she briefly toyed with the idea of petitioning to finish out her high schooling through homeschooling once again, but never seriously pursued the idea, believing that her parents would be opposed.
One of Olive's big interests is medicine. As a young child, she asked her parents why their name was on ads for the Mayo Clinic, her mother told her that it was because that was their family business, and everyone else in the family was doctors, and while this was meant as a joke, Olive believed it until she was eleven and assumed that this was her future as well. Through her games of doctor and her reading, she actually did discover a passion for the subject, becoming fascinated with how the human body works and the capacity people have to repair damage to it, and her own surgeries in high school only increased her interest. She is first aid and CPR certified and proudly carries her certification cards in her wallet, though the closest to using it she has ever come is dressing minor cuts and scrapes.
When Olive was six years old, her sister received a cheap radio-controlled car for Christmas, and allowed Olive to operate it. This became a regular activity for the pair over the next year, and while Debra-Agnes eventually lost interest in the toy, Olive never did, amusing herself by building courses in the backyard, decorating the car, and so on. In the years since, she's developed this into a real hobby, periodically upgrading her cars. Her current favorite has a tiger-striped silhouette of the famous Bigfoot photo on the side, and has a small camera mounted to it so she can record her drives, which she uploads to a YouTube channel, though she has only a handful of subscribers. Olive loves the memories with her sister from her childhood, as well as the different forms of creative expression that decorating the cars and filming her videos allows. Despite this, she is very apprehensive about the prospect actually driving a real car, worrying that she's not responsible or attentive enough to be safe behind the wheel, and has not yet even applied for a learner's permit, despite some prodding from her parents.
Olive adores cryptozoology. She was first introduced to mythological creatures through fantasy stories and children's television shows, and when her parents explained to her that dragons and unicorns didn't actually exist, she was crushed. Over time, however, Olive became fascinated by creatures that are widely considered fictional but that some people believe in, as well as those that were once considered real but are now believed to be hoaxes or misidentifications. Olive has read extensively about more famous cryptids, like bigfoot, but has also delved into more obscure cases, like Audubon's possibly-fictional Washington's Eagle. She has also read a lot about UFO abduction cases. Olive loves to share information about her favorite cases with others, which tends not to go particularly well, as she's not very good at explaining things and often misses or ignores social cues that her audience lacks interest. Olive personally believes that most cryptids are not real, but almost always has one or two that she maintains have some degree of factual basis, though which these are change regularly.
Presently, Olive is generally successful in school. Her grades are mostly high; she's fairly intelligent and good at book learning, and she wants to be successful in class and thus applies herself. She's best in science class, and also has taken a revolving set of electives, exploring many of the school's less-popular courses though never sticking with anything for more than a semester. She struggles in English, not with the reading or analysis, but with ordering her thoughts coherently and persuasively in written form. On creative assignments, however, Olive shines, finding unique perspectives and ways to express herself. One thing that causes Olive regular trouble, however, is her tendency to space out or get lost in thought, usually in musings unrelated to her schoolwork; it's not uncommon for her to get ahead in a lesson, zone out, and five minutes later find herself scrambling to catch up.
Socially, things aren't quite so rosy. Olive has a few friends in her class, but even these are fairly casual. For the most part, she gets along better with her teachers than her peers, as they're better at dealing with her enthusiasm for obscure subjects and tendency to ramble, and less offended if she gets distracted or tunes out during conversation; at the same time, however, they can't fulfill her social needs in as meaningful a way or serve in the same capacity as peers. Her classmates tend to view her as strange, and she's still the butt of jokes fairly regularly, though has escaped serious bullying. Olive often comes off as overenthusiastic, and can miss social cues, especially those suggesting that others are fed up with her or taking advantage of her. Olive considers herself heterosexual, and dated a boy from the summer before senior year through the first few months of class, but ultimately he dumped her, revealing that he'd never really expected it to be a long-term relationship. Olive was devastated, felt hurt and betrayed, and has not dated since.
Olive's closest connections remain to her family. She considers her sister her best friend, though they don't see each other as much as Olive would like. Debra-Agnes attends college in California, and has spent the past two summers with her long-term boyfriend, a man from Hong Kong, and is planning to move back there with him after graduation. Still, she and Olive text with each other daily. Olive's mother is her more available confidante, though she has absolutely no interest in Olive's more fantastical ramblings, or in remote-controlled cars. Olive's father is a lot more indulgent on these subjects, and often takes her for drives or brings her along to houses when he's photographing them for listings, but he isn't as comfortable providing direct emotional support, and can sometimes upset her by being overly blunt in his approach.
Olive plans to attend college after she's done with high school, and currently intends to pursue a pre-med track. At present, she wants to work in medicine, ideally as a doctor, but is privately a little unsure if she'll actually have the focus and motivation to see it through, and is also terrified that her focus issues could prove hazardous in such a profession. She doesn't really have any backup plan at present, but does expect to explore various subjects when she actually enters college and intends to start her journey through higher education with more general credits.
Advantages: While far from a professional, Olive has studied medicine more than the average high school student and is first aid and CPR certified. She is creative and looks at things from an unusual perspective, potentially allowing her to find opportunities that others might miss.
Disadvantages: Olive is generally gullible and prone to taking others at face value, leaving her vulnerable to manipulation. She is frequently gets lost in her own head, and struggles to focus on details, even important ones. Olive has few close friends, can be oblivious to social cues, and is mostly thought of as annoying or weird.

"Art enriches the community, Steve, no less than a pulsing fire hose, or a fireman beating down a blazing door. So what if we're drawing a nude man? So what if all we ever draw is a nude man, or the same nude man over and over in all sorts of provocative positions? Context, not content! Process, not subject! Don't be so gauche, Steve, it's beneath you."
