Olive heard that.
Nothing good could last. No happy moment was permanent. Should've been friends in the real world. No time now.
The slide-rock bolter had arrived.
With a yelp, Olive dived for the cover offered by a larger stone. She sheltered behind it as a river of rocks swept through the path.
"Come on," she yelled. She couldn't hear herself speaking. The dust was everywhere. Her eyes watered. She couldn't see the others. She couldn't do anything.
"Come on."

I bid you all dark greetings!
Rocks, ice, and mud slid around her, dragging her in, flipping her around like a child tossing around a toy. She yelled. She felt two rocks grinding her shin between them, and she couldn't smell any lood admist all the dirt in her eyes and nose, but she knew that something broke, whether it be skin or bone. She didn't have time to process, or to think anything, or even be anything other than an instinct-wired creature at all.
Goats tumbled beside her, their legs snapping, their bleats piercing.
Soon, she was nowhere to be found.

Blood Tongue Nails Teeth
Maybe they jinxed it.
Maybe they talked too much about the slide rock bolters.
Maybe they somehow brought this upon themselves.
But then a cavalcade of rocks began tumbling down.
Elodie sped towards her own boulder, her limbs shaking. Rocks kept beating down on them, as she heard the noise of breaking bones, the cries of goats, the… the… everything.
“Please…” she whimpered under her breath, but it was inaudible.
They were going to die right here. She’d never see Bridgette again, or do anything she wanted. She’d never find out about her parents, or taste good bread again, or see anything by the Jim Henson Company again, or anything. It was over.
Elodie tightly closed her eyes, the sound of crashing rocks and breaking bones around, drumming against the boulder she hid behind.

The rocks fell and crashed. The dust billowed. Olive coughed and cowered behind her boulder, holding her hands in front of her face. Her thumbs kept drifting towards the corners of her eyes to rub the dirt away, but then she'd imagine getting bonked by a rock and poking her eyes out and would stop.
Finally, after what felt really long for only a handful of seconds, the noise started to fade off downhill. Olive did poke at her eyes now. They were watering badly, but she could open them and see again.
She saw that the path behind her was gone. There was a slope of loose earth and rocks. A ways further, she saw another large stone like the one she'd hidden behind, and she thought she saw someone there.
She rubbed her eyes again. The world clarified.
"Elodie?" Olive yelled. "Millie?"
Her ears were still ringing.

Eventually, it stopped.
Elodie uncurled herself, blinking. The dust had gotten in her eyes, too. Her arms shook as she lowered them onto her legs. Blink, blink, breathe breathe.
Then, she heard Olive's voice.
"I'm here! Millie?"

Olive rubbed her eyes again. The world went fuzzy when her glasses were lifted, then finally properly clear as they landed back on her nose.
"Over here, Elodie," she called.
Elodie sounded unharmed. But Millie wasn't saying anything. Olive took big breaths. She looked around wildly. The dust was settling. The last few pebbles lazily bounced down the slope.
"Oh god," Olive said, "I think she fell."
She leaned forward, looking over the side. The slide had carved a path down the slope. Snow and dirt were intermingled. Tree stumps were uprooted. Millie was nowhere to be seen.
Olive looked back to Elodie. Yep. No apparent damage. There was only one thing to do.
"Come on," she yelled. "We have to go find her!"
It would be way too dangerous to follow in the wake of the slide. Instead, Olive took off down the path.

“She fell?!”
Elodie uncurled herself and stood up shakily. Deep breath, deep breath. Another quest, this time to save Millie. She had no choice, she had to.
And with that, she followed Olive.
Could she be a hero? She doubted it, but just this once, she needed… no, she needed to make sure she wasn’t going to be–
Millie needed to be safe. She had to be.
