Private

Located on the shore of the frozen lake between the forest itself, the campground was a popular summer getaway spot for residents of the town, frequently featuring BBQs and games of softball among other activities. The campground now is home to a few abandoned tents, an outhouse, and a single lonely log cabin with a small jetty. The time left abandoned has seen the log cabin, outhouse and jetty become covered in moss.

((Aracelis Fuentes continued from Finders Keepers))

The situation Aracelis and Leslie found themselves in was great in her opinion. They’d managed to collect two extra packs worth of stuff and foil two ambushes. She was still bitter about Constance but she knew that people were racking up bigger kill counts than her one, so she should have been able to blend in with the sea of names.

All they needed to do was find some shelter and their withdrawal through the trees by the lake had led to them catching sight of a campground on the northern shore. So that was where they set out to go. The discussion had been quick and easy, she had told Leslie they should take the camp as their shelter as it had a log cabin and he’d mumbled his agreement. They set off with a purpose and arrived in good time.

Now that they’d arrived it was a disappointment if Aracelis was being honest. There were signs of people having been around, footprints in the snow, tracks, general litter and disturbances. But no stashed supplies, no abandoned packs, nothing inherently useful aside from the shelter that the cabin provided. Aracelis was sat on the moss-covered step that led up into the cabin surveying the campground with an annoyed pout plastered across her face. She hadn’t expected much but she had assumed that there would have been something.

“It’s shit but I guess it’ll do.” She said absentmindedly to Leslie, more to fill the silence than anything else. Then she took a sip from one of her many water bottles.

((Leslie Romero continued from Finders Keepers))

"It's something," Leslie replied, absent-mindedly stroking the bristles on his jaw with a thumb. He always wanted to grow one of those bushy mountain man kind of beards like his uncle had when he was old enough, though he never made the attempt and just chickened out of No Shave November outside of the fair goatee he kept. Maybe by the end of this and with maybe some acceleration due to emotional duress, he could get his wish. But at the same time, he hadn't even seen his own reflection in four, possibly five or six days. He wondered if he'd even recognize himself right now.

Anyway, he was about to say something about maybe not looking at gift horses in the mouth, but he let it go. One day without bickering would be nice, let alone just a day to enjoy the blessing that they were running around with now currently 3 bags worth of supplies. As long as they kept the momentum up, things would be fine until Leslie could figure out a way to push Aracelis into the path of an oncoming bus.

He picked his toe into the ground and kicked some snow up.

He didn't say anything else to fill the silence from his end.

Leslie replied and then they settled into another silence. A passing breeze made the trees around the campground lazily sway and caused Aracelis to shiver and pull her jacket tighter. She took another sip of water and nearly gagged as she felt something stick to the roof of her mouth and lightly scratch at the back of her throat. Reaching up she stuck her index finger and thumb inside and after some blind gropes she caught the offending item and withdrew a small tangled clump of hair.

Aracelis swallowed and squeezed her eyes shut to prevent herself from gagging again and then shook the offending hair off of her fingers.

“Gross.” She whispered as the spongy, wet mass dropped onto the snow.

Another, longer sip of her water followed to wash her mouth out. Once she was satisfied Aracelis returned the bottle into her pack.

“I’ve been thinking,” She began, deciding to bring up a topic and idea that had slowly been worming it’s way to the forefront of her mind. An important idea, something they needed to deal with.

“You remember what Juanita said? Back at the sheriffs office?” She continued, watching Leslie kick at the dirt before turning her upper body to face him directly. “About how Dani sent them? I think we need to deal with that.”

“Cut the head off the snake.”

The rhythm of Leslie's braindead kicks ground into a halt as he honed his eyes right at Aracelis on the rock thing. He furrowed his brows as he listened to her, his eyes shifting left and right as he parsed her words and what they implied.

And they better not've implied what he thought she was thinking.

Thus spoke Leslie, both hands jammed into his pockets to try and hold onto what little warmth was afforded by the lining of his clothes and body. "What do you mean? Like...?" His words dragged, obscured if they were intentionally accusing his fair-weather compatriot of committing to a witch hunt or just from what was originally truly blissful ignorance.

“Don’t act dumb,” Aracelis huffed. She knew Leslie understood her meaning, she’d been clear.

“It’s obvious, if they’re forming a group and setting out to kill people we need to take it out, for our own safety.”

She shrugged. “If Dani’s their leader we take her out, that’s the problem dealt with.”

Aracelis did have to admit it sounded like a better idea in her head. It made more sense theoretically but the words had been spoken. That meant she had to stand by them and commit.

It was only Dani after all, dumb privileged Dani. So rich that she happily flaunted her wealth in everyone’s face and casually talk about how expensive everything she owned was. Meanwhile, everyone else was just expected to sit there and nod along smiling, happy that she graced them with her presence and the occasional handout.

Of course she would have immediately set about creating a group of followers out of girls from the all the sports teams, they were her court after all.

Aracelis’ clenched fists started to shake as her temper began to flare up. Imagining Dani lounging around in some house in the town, dispatching teams out into the wilderness to hunt down victims.

She closed her eyes and let out a low steady breath. After letting her anger simmer down she open her hands and rested her palms one on top of the other on top of the baseball bat between her legs. Then she placed her chin on it, thinking.

“So?”

"Yep, no doubt about it, there's at least two of 'em out there..."

((Shawn Bellamy continued from Castle))

Shawn ducked back behind a ragged tent, rubbing his stubbly chin as he considered their next move.

Just as expected, there were other competitors occupying the campground. It was an obvious target after all, more remote than either the town or the research station, granted it's location was marked on everyone's map so it was hardly a secret. If anything he was more surprised that a larger group hadn't laid claim to it.

"Can't tell who from here, would need to get closer."

Waiting until he was sure their classmates were looking elsewhere, he slipped out of cover and silently snuck towards a moss-covered outhouse, motioning for Bethany to follow him as he peeked his head around the corner to take a closer look.

His eyes widened the moment he realised who they'd come across, ducking back out of sight as fear began to grip him.

The boy he didn't recognise, the girl however... He knew enough to put a name to her face. A name that Bethany had brought up herself on a number of occasions, in a similar tone to those on that growing list of her's.

He clung tightly to his makeshift spear, a bead of sweat dripping down his brow. A thousand scenarios and potential outcomes flashed before his eyes, none of them pleasant. Despite his earlier complaints, Shawn suddenly found himself wishing he was back at their campsite, realising what was about to happen once Bethany got close enough to recognise them as well. Within a matter of minutes, things were about to get very real way too quickly, and there wasn't a damn thing he could do about it.

In that brief moment of respite before the coming storm, there was only one thing he could think to say, quietly under his breath.

"Oh, shit."

[Bethany Lyon seeks a stronger Castle.]

It didn’t really occur to Beth that, for all her assumptions of taking charge, she had ultimately been following Shawn’s lead for the last couple of days. Maybe if it had, she’d have started blaming him for the way they were both spinning their proverbial wheels so far. She wanted to be delivering judgement to evil people, not hiking the wilderness in search of shelter. Even so, she couldn’t argue with the basic idea: shelter was a basic need from which other concerns could stem. People had already died of exposure. No amount of righteous anger could keep her from freezing to death after all.

So she followed Shawn’s lead towards the campground labelled on the map. If any real structures survived there, they’d be immediately preferable to a makeshift shelter near a fire. So immediately preferable, indeed, that Beth had spent the journey mentally preparing herself to fight for it. Based on her earlier confrontation with Abhishek, she expected to find someone else occupying any desirable shelter and to need to contest that occupation, be it with words or violence.

So, to cut a long story short, it came as neither a surprise nor a daunting concern when her partner pointed out another duo in the near distance.

He said something under his breath. Beth wasn’t listening.

It only took a look to identify one of the two.

Aracelis Fuentes. The other was immaterial.

Biting back her anger, Beth crouched down next to Shawn, out of sight. Last time, charging in recklessly hadn’t served her well, albeit with a much inferior weapon. This time she would go in smart.

“Who’s that with her?”

It was supposed to come out as a stage whisper. The result was closer to a growl. In truth, she didn’t care about his identity: his identity was person willingly hanging out with a murderer as far as she was concerned. What mattered was if he was armed, and how well.

"No?!" Aracelis said, her head snapping around so she could glare at Leslie. "What the fu—" She stopped and fell silent, petulantly throwing her head to the side to look away from Leslie and out over the campground. Her leg started bouncing up and down as she turned his one-word answer over in her head.

Despite her anger boiling up Aracelis tried to keep her emotions level and under control. Leslie was her teammate such as it was and he had the stun gun, which was the most useful of their two weapons. She didn't want to go off on him and ruin the partnership they had. Not at the point in time they were at.

But still, it irked her that he didn't go along with her plan. It made sense for them to do it, it took out opposition and they could still get supplies out of it!

But no, Leslie had just said no, and didn't need any explanation or justification. Didn't need to offer any alternative ideas, just no.

Here she was coming up with plans and ideas and there he was giving her nothing back.

Her leg continued bouncing.

She swung her vision back around to Leslie and fixed him with a glare.

"Why not?"

"Because it's goddamn stu-"

Leslie stopped speaking abruptly and closed his eyes and drew his hands out, motioning them palms to the earth and pushing down as if he was gently forcing the air in front of himself down and out of the way.

"Ok. Look." He opened his eyes again, hands still hovering right in front of himself but with both palms flipped open as he resumed his frustrated speech after another pause. "We got a good thing going as is at a good pace, yes? I don't think it's gonna do us much good going after someone specific let alone if she has followers feeding her grapes or some shit."

"Save whatever weird personal biases you have with that bitch for yourself," he thought in the moment but quickly edited out while he was currently talking to a crazy lady handling a baseball bat when all he had was a dinky stun gun.

He huffed to himself again before continuing. "When I die, I dont want it to be because I got too greedy."

"Fuck if I know" Shawn replied, a bitter nervousness to his voice.

The two were close enough at this point to overhear Aracelis and her unknown ally's conversation, granted they were missing a fair bit of context. He managed to pick out enough to surmise that they were arguing about going after someone, a girl who had cultivated several followers from the sound of things.

That last detail in particular piqued Shawn's interest, his brow rising in curiosity. It didn't surprise him to hear that there were larger groups forming, safety in numbers and all, nor did it strike him as odd that they would flock behind his more charismatic classmates. But something about this group had evidently earned Aracelis' ire, and that left him itching to find out why.

"Followers?" he whispers, glancing back at Bethany. "Wonder who they're talking about..."

Followers? Aracelis was worried about someone gathering up allies? Interesting. Bethany filed that one away for later. Someone striking fear in the hearts of killers might, if she was very lucky, be someone like her. Perhaps they could work together. Perhaps it was just wishful thinking and the mystery menace was even more dangerous. Could be Kitty for all she knew.

Moreover, she was getting the sense that the other one - the boy, she decided based on his voice - seemed the be shrinking away from really speaking his mind to the murderer. On its face it shouldn’t be surprising, but it suggested a further detail: he didn’t feel he could assert himself meaningfully, he probably wasn’t any better armed, if armed at all. Just like Shawn hadn’t contradicted her and her pickaxe taking the lead.

Plus, the dissension in the ranks seemed like an opportunity.

Beth had heard enough.

“Handle the boy.”

She hefted her weapon, cradling it in both hands for her approach. Left hand at the base, right hand under the head. Ready to swing, ready to block, just… ready.

“You know she’s a murderer, don’t you?”

Beth strode forth with as much confidence as she could project. She was a good actress, and bravado was well within her repertoire.

So was law. Idea.

“You also tried to kill Przemyslaw Ziemiak, didn’t you? Maimed him. Blinded him.”

Beth’s face twisted into a scowl. Thinking back to her first day, her ineffectual panic, her foolish notions of being subject to karmic punishment, her idiotic plan to gather people in peace and somehow be the first school out of eight to just refuse to play along.

God, she’d been pathetic.

“You stand accused, how do you plead?”

Bethany knew he’d chances of getting the answer she wanted were slim to none. But at least it might give her companion pause. And it shored up her claim to seeking justice. Yeah. That. Not just revenge. Revenge was a by-product.

If Beth kept telling herself that, maybe it’d even become true.

They were about to blow up at each other. Aracelis could feel the heat of anger rising up from her gut through her chest and to her head and face. Leslie didn't agree and seemed like he had issues with her even bringing up the suggestion. Aracelis glared at him as he spoke. His words were run through her head and searched for any points of weakness, any part of his argument she could put pressure on to get her way. But she couldn't find anything that was readily disputable. At the same time, she didn't want to admit he was right. So instead her mouth opened and closed again as her eyes narrowed. She grunted non-committedly and then turned her gaze out over the lake, no longer wanting to look at him.

When the voice called out at them Aracelis rolled her eyes. Her head slowly turned to see Beth approaching and her eyes widened in surprise. She had the pickaxe from the first day held in her hands and was holding it in a way that made it clear she was expecting trouble. As soon as Beth brought up Przemyslaw the anger that had been bubbling just below the surface broke and enveloped her.

Aracelis leapt to her feet, the baseball bat gripped tightly in her right hand as she turned to face Beth head-on.

How did she plead?

Aracelis wondered where Beth got off speaking to her the way. The drama levels turned all the way, appealing to Leslie as if he was a simpleton who had been lured in by her.

The answer was simple, and Aracelis knew she could have just said it and potentially defused everything, or at least not thrown gasoline on the fire. But Leslie had pissed her off, so she wanted to blow something up.

"That was an accident," She growled, keeping her vision focused on Beth, while her hand tightened its grip around the baseball bat. "And you can't care that much because I don't see him with you."

That was that, Leslie supposed. The knots in his stomach churned as he watched Aracelis pout at him and turn away like a toddler who didn't get their way, but whatever. She could say anything she wanted, but it was truly a stupid thing to suggest.

He rolled his eyes almost to the back of his skull when she turned away from him. That was when he saw the new character-of-the-day deathgripping a pickaxe like it was her last $20, approaching out of the corner of his eye.

Leslie just kinda stared between the girl and Aracelis like a confused dog as they spat at each other. What was it with people coming out of the woodwork to be holier-than-thou lately? Not to mention implying that he was some goober swindled by Aracelis's feminine assets 10 seconds ago. Then again, it gave him a little relief she didn't seem to know who he was. His plan was still sort-of working.

More importantly, if pickaxe girl was so suicidal to come up to a known killer and exchange pleasantries with her, she must've been confident she had the upper hand. She didn't seem particularly wanting to die by police, and she just had a pickaxe on her person, so therefore...

Leslie just let them both talk as he turned around every which way and scanned like a hawk, his hand fishing for the stun gun hidden in one of the pockets of his jacket.

Shawn sighed as the pencil finally dropped, gripping his spear tightly.

"Well, so much for playing it smart..." he whispers to himself, before quietly darting out from behind his cover.

Shawn moved swiftly to reach a concealed position before his ally drew their attention, just barely making it behind a tree near the corner of that cabin when Bethany made her grand entrance. So far so good. He wiped fresh sweat from his brow as he pondered his options, knowing full well that he needed to do something fast if he wanted to make it out of this situation without losing a valuable ally. Not to mention a friend.

He could just charge in, guns blazing, but that was risky and stupid. Hell, this whole situation was stupid, but there was nothing he could do to escape it at this point. Not without ditching Bethany, anyway, and she was...

Alright, think think think... What'd be the best distraction right about now?

Shawn thought for a moment, until an idea pinged. He reached into his pocket to retrieve one of the jagged rocks he had used to sharpen his spear, sizing it up for a moment before shrugging and lobbing it as hard as he could at the nearest window he could see, shattering it into pieces.
