BKA Matthew Bell for killing Jack Kilgore

Matt's plan here is satisfying to watch unfold, I at least thought it was very clever but granted it doesn't take much to impress me in the smarts regard. I also like the hints of his inner conflict, or maybe his attempts to convince himself that he is conflicted; either way he's a very interesting character IMO and this first kill of his doesn't disappoint.

BDA: Gundham for the death of Rebekah Hayes

Okay I'm a sucker for animal facts but this is a great death even without that bias of mine. Rebekah's an endearing oddball from start to finish and this sums that up nicely with the 52 blue metaphor in particular being very bittersweet. I like the synchronization with Beth's death for the callback to Rebekah's poem too. Rebethah = soulmates?!

My vote for Best Kill Award goes to Salem Fox for killing Timothy Adams. I’m gonna be honest, Salem has always struck me as the kind of guy who will kill at some point, and I’ve just been waiting for him to snap at some point. Now that he’s walked into a thread, get Julia and Tim’s trust, only to immediately pull out his gun and gun down Timothy shortly afterwards, I feel like he’s gonna go on a rampage, and I am all here for it!

My vote for Best Death Award goes to CardboardAirplane for the death of Perante Losoa. I feel like there was already a sad air around this one, since CA lost both his kids in pretty quick succession, and I feel like they manage to emphasize that saddeness with Perante’s end. The guy was pretty sure from the start he wouldn’t live, and at this point he’s basically decided to embrace the idea, purposely going into a danger zone with an aura of finality. It makes my heart hurt, but in that good way that makes me want to compliment Cardboard!

BKA: Salem Fox

There's something very darkly comedic about this scene--Salem pulls a gun, gets a faceful of melted ice cream, shoots blindly, and realizes after the fact that he had killed Tim instead of Julia. Most of these things happen in the span of a few seconds. Also, what is it about this version and unsettling boys? They're all so good. Salem isn't overtly creepy, but he unsettles you nevertheless, because he's slippery, because he's all shallow charm and he knows it, because you can't help but wonder if the reason he's shallow is because there isn't anything below the surface. Something I appreciate about this scene is how much Salem is holding back. Salem's willing to share his thoughts, but he won't let you get too close. We know that he wants to make the news with a particularly sensational headline, and we know that this was why he picked Julia, but we don't know why he wants to make the news (though, of course, we can try to piece together an underlying motive or a logic to what he's doing, making guesses and inferences from the surface-level stuff he's willing to give up).

BDA: Rebekah Hayes

.........yeah. This one hits. This one made me sad irl. I feel like there's not much here to say that isn't pretty obvious. The death poem, Blue 52, stubbornly refusing help because she doesn't want to be a burden, her friends refusing to leave her proving that if she's a burden then she's a burden worth carrying, everything. It all works so well.

Honorable Mentions

Speaking of unsettling boys, Josh continues to be both terrifying and terrifyingly believable. Corbin and D's scene was incredibly tight--I really enjoyed the suspense of D's hand hovering over the khopesh as she makes up her mind, and I like the way Corbin almost...dwindles away in this scene, his death post consisting of nothing but a tag because he's got nothing left. I really liked the conceit of Perante's death, the division between what he's thinking and how he appears from the outside. Bethany's death was also great--the sense of concussed confusion was perfectly done, as is the way she puts things together after the fact. Timing the death post with Rebekah's was really, really cool.
