Tutoring W/Meghan Roberts

Meghan paused, thinking. She didn’t really think that hard on Theology. She wasn’t really the religious type, more of the “go with the flow” type of belief. But now Lo’s talking piqued her own interest. She placed her elbows on the table and glanced upwards.

“Well…people then didn’t know what to think. No one knew how…the world worked. How gravity was a thing. How lightning was made. Or the sea moved. Or evolution happened. People just saw a bunch of things happened and well…they formed an idea around it. And that idea got popular…and well. Yeah. Here we are.”

The good thing for Meghan is that Lopaka questions everything that he can see. Well, not that he thinks that nothing is real (god, that would be terrifying, wouldn’t it?)- more or so that everything and everyone is doing something!

He never questioned how it all happened. Is that….supposed to be history?

“….Kinda crazy that so many people came to the same conclusion.” Lopaka tilts his head. “There’s sooooo many religions, bro! The world must’ve been wildddddd.”

“Isn’t it? Well, you know, back then there were less people. So others people messages spread easier.” Meghan twirled her hair in her finger, curling her lips.

She was now invested in the conversation. Seemed it was helping Lo pay attention to what was on the page. Plus, she was genuinely happy conversing with someone.

“Heh, maybe if you were alive back then, you could’ve started your own religion. Try and do it now, it’s just called a cult.”

“Dude, I could’ve made the coolest religion! I promise you that. Imagine that- and then somebody would be reading about the great Lopaka Akana! And his creation of…”

Lopaka thinks of a good name.

“…..Broism.” He beams, hitting his chest with a clenched fist. “For everyone to be their best bro! Woooohoooooo!”

Meghan smiled softly, laughing “Broism!? Hah! I would’ve converted!”

She leaned back and opened up her own textbook, looking at it “You could make your own cult when you graduate if this essay doesn’t work out. I’ll be your first member.” She joked, poking it “But right now, lets try and found on passing that essay.”

“Hey, Broism ain’t a cult! It’s a religion for all the best bros out there!” Lopaka imagined a time back when he could make everyone into his bros. The world could have been SO MUCH COOLER with Broism around!

“Okay, okay….” Lopaka returned to his reading. “…Thank you for this, Megs.” New nickname for a new friend. “Honestly, I never thought reading would be this much fun. You’re a great tutor, y’know that?”

Meghan looked bashful, glancing away before she gave an prideful chuckle “Awww, shucks! I try my best to help anyone who just needs a little bit of support!”

She placed her hands on head, drawing up on the notebook “If you need anything or any questions, ask it! I’m always here to help! And to support!”

Wow Meggy! Round of an applause you’re building camaraderie!

“Dude, I needed a lottttttt of support. Not just a little. I was so nervous goin’ into this, ‘cuz I ain’t ever had a tutor…” Lopaka chuckled as he flipped over to the next page.

“….You mind if I come here more often? I ain’t challenged, but, like…..it’s really hard.” Lopaka nervously rubbed the back of his head. “My only good subject’s math, and that’s ’cuz I have to fight to stay afloat.”

Meghan gave a soft smile at the jock, slowly reaching over and patting his back “Meggy’s tutoring session is always open, Lolo. All I ask is having a sweet tooth and open mind.”

Wooo! Repeat students!

Holy shit she just called him Lolo. Lopaka’s face immediately morphs into puppy eyes, as nicknames always manage to make him feel special and worthy. He’s been given candy, help with his paper, and he has a new friend! What else is there to ask for?

“Well, I got both of those!” Lopaka happily clasped his hands together. “Guess you’ll be getting used to this face!”

“Well I caaan’t wait!” Meggy snapped her fingers, excited while cracking open her own textbook “If you need anything else, Lolo. Just ask. You’re gonna nail this essay!”

Meggy remarked happily as she decided to see how Lo can do on his own, fiddling with her badge again as she studies the page.

“Okay, I can do this…”

Lopaka laughed as he got back to the book once more, laughter and conversation ceasing as he went straight to reading. Somehow, it had become….fun. A lot more enjoyable than he originally thought- and all he needed to do was reach out.

Even if they’re all about to graduate soon, Lopaka can at least acknowledge that he needed the help to get through the last few months.

Meghan continued her reading of her own textbook for the next hour or so, though giving periodic glances towards Lo to see his progress on the reading and writing. It was odd, she could always hold a conversation with others. That was just her natural talent. But she found herself enjoying this jock’s company as she helped him with the essay.

Her dad always said to her. Help in every little way you can. Arresting thugs doesn’t just make a good community. It’s helping the people in it. Ironic coming from him, she can see that in hindsight. But it’s still a good message to live by.

She stretched as she shut the book and glanced at the clock on the wall, and then glancing over at Lo “So. How we doing?”

The last hour (or maybe it was two) had been spent having to adjust everything that he could. It was a lot of work, hell, a lot more than he wanted to put down. But, it actually felt….nice. He felt proud of what he had put down on the paper. All of it had came straight from his heart.

“I think….I got a draft.” Lopaka slowly slides the paper over. His handwriting’s a little messy, but still legible. “Tell me what you think.”

Meghan dramatically took the paper, and pretended to adjust glasses on her head before leaning in to read the writing. She stayed silent, her eyebrows furrowing with each sentence she read, leaning in closer to read more and more.

“Lo….this is…” She begins, her voice faltering as she continues to read.
