The soft rumble of the car on the bumpy road was almost comforting. As he stared out window of the backseat, watching the trees speed past as the car continued it’s journey back home to Chattanooga, Lorenzo felt anything but comfort. He’d barely spoken since Mr. Futscher and Demetri had found him and the three made their way back to the car to head home. Just simple answers to any questions thrown his way. One word phrases to keep the conversation going. He and Demetri hadn’t made so much as a glance at each other. It was awful. Lorenzo felt like his chest was going to burst, but even so, he couldn’t bring himself to say or do anything to the other boy.

Lorenzo rested his head on the window, letting the car’s movement bump his head back and forth as he kept his gaze focused on anything but the inside of this car. He wrapped his arms around his chest tightly and tried his best to drown out Mr. Futscher’s happy ramblings. His father was coming to get him tonight as soon as they got back. Lorenzo would have to quickly grab all of his things, and scurry out the door before his stone-faced facade broke. He’d already let Mr. Futscher know this was happening at least, mumbling out some half-baked lie to cover up the real reason he was leaving.

Not that he could actually say what the real reason was.

Maybe if he stayed, he and Demetri could move past what happened and talk things out. Maybe then their friendship wouldn't be over. Sadly, Lorenzo couldn’t bring himself to stay. He couldn’t bring himself to try. The emotions inside him were still all mixed up and uncomfortable. He just wanted to go home.

Dealing with emotions like these was just too much work.
