Looming over Meggy at the poolside, it occurred to Heather that she wasn't exactly sure why she'd hurried down to help. Wasn't like the other girl couldn't get out of the pool by herself, she'd already done it moments ago. Perhaps just to check she hadn't hit her head or anything, or just that general we keep us safe mantra of community care that came free with her politics? No, that wasn't it. Looking down at the actually-drenched proverbial-kitten standing before here, Heather realised it was the same thing that had put some significantly less-kind thoughts in her head many times before.

Meggy was a sweetheart, and the "bad apples" would eat her alive if she wasn't careful. She'd end up just like her dad. Or become just like them. Death either way, literal or figurative. Unlikely as it seemed even to Heather herself, she didn't relish that thought.

"Yeah. Look after yourself." she grunted, and turned back towards where she'd left her things on the bleachers. To give Meghan some privacy in her embarassment. Yeah, that was why.

“You too!” Meghan laughed a little, watching Heather walk away.

She paused for a moment and then immediately turned around then quickly walked out of the pool area.

Not the best, Meggy. But hey, you made good conversation!

Meghan’s embarrassment was pushed aside, genuinely proud of herself over the nice conversation with someone. Building a good repertoire with people was the most important thing of being a cop. That’s what her dad taught her. Being a pillar of your community, selfless, being noble and charitable.

You’re doing great, Meggy.
