No Rest for the Weary

While not especially large, containing roughly five stories, this hotel once served as a temporary residence for island tourists. Perhaps the hotel could serve as a safe haven for you as well? Don't let your guard down here, however, you never know who's watching you from the shadows.

Debrah looked up at the boy who had instantly fired in her direction. She pulled out her own gun, tossing the axe aside.

"What're you talking about?!" She shouted across the room, she couldn't die yet. Not now.

Mariavel heard the other boy's words and knew that they were indeed true. But she couldn't let him kill her. Not yet. Maybe when she'd finally did what she had to do. But now…. That wasn't an option. She just had to hold her ground and beat this boy back.

"Those are the rules! It's kill or be killed! I'm going to survive!" She yelled back as she heard two bullets bounce off metal. She fired three more rounds at the hidden du before returning to her station. She was having no luck firing with the rifle. She might have to stick to the handgun.

She pulled the pistol from her waist and shot at the duo. They were still hidden however. The bullet bounced off the wall of the corner they hid behind. She cursed and hid herself once more.

"Come out and fight like a man! Coward!"

He heard the girl reiterate the rules of the game to him before firing off another few blasts from her gun.  He knew the rules full well.  Hell, he was there when they'd shot that girl to pieces for failure to listen.  He was there through the whole damned presentation that woman presented, from the video onward.  He knew good and well what the rules of this ridiculous game were.  In fact, he himself had participated in it, once...

"You're gonna let these people tell you what to do?" he scoffed, still cowered in his hiding place, "Are you that gullible?  What do you think you'll get if you do what they tell you?  You won't get ANYTHING.  You want a prize for killing somebody?  Let me tell you something, I've got a prize.  All they gave me was this worthless fucking handgun that'll help me murder MORE people.  I don't know about you, but I don't want that.  I don't want any of it!"

His words seemed to go completely unheard.  Then again, maybe she heard and she just didn't care.  Maybe she was the sane one out here.  Maybe... just maybe, Ricky was the one who was completely insane for thinking that he could somehow manage to avoid this game.  Maybe he didn't get anything for playing by the rules, but what did he get for refusing to play at all?  He got shot at.  He got chased around by psychopaths that were trying to murder him just because they could.  In retrospect, taking a pacifist state in all this madness was in and of itself suicide.

"All you have is the shield, right?" he muttered to Whitney.

"Yeah..." she managed quietly.

"Dammit."

"Why, what'd you have in mind?" she inquired, her voice still quivering.

He let out a deep sigh.

"Look... I know this isn't what you want to hear, but this girl... she's not going to stop.  If we leave now... if I let her walk out of this place, she'll just go out and kill more people.  She's a danger to everybody on this island, and she has to be stopped..."

"So you're implying that we kill her?" Whitney voiced.

"What else am I supposed to do?" he asked, "If I didn't... if I stopped her and just left her here... somebody else would pick her off anyway.  And... if I don't do anything, she'll just kill more people."

"That doesn't make it right..." she stated quietly.

Ricky bit his bottom lip.  He knew all too well how wrong it was.  He'd known from the moment that he felt Eric's own handmade spear dig itself into his best friend's torso.  He'd known how wrong it was ever since he looked at the face of his best friend as he lay skewered on his own weapon.  It didn't make it right... nothing ever made it right.  Still, they had no other choice.  The girl taunted him, and Ricky rang off another shot of his own.

"Ladies first," he taunted back.

Mariavel listened to the boy's words. She had no choice but to believe them. She didn't want to kill like this… she… she wanted to go home… she'd rather everything go back to the way it was. She… she was just as scared as him. She… she had no choice. She had to get rid of him. Here and now. He'd have to die. Swiftly and painlessly she'd wish, but it didn't seem as if it'd work out that way. A shot rang out and he called her out. She had more weaponry than him; she would no doubt overpower the two of them. He was being foolish.

"Oh, so the big man want's to play rough, eh?" She taunted and fired another two shots at the hidden duo. She tried to think of a way she could get out of this. She needed to formulate a plan. Her eyes trained over the dead body of Matthias and she sighed. Grant would never forgive her.

"I… I won't let you kill me…. Maybe I do deserve to die for everything I've done…. But I… No, It doesn't matter. You think you can get through this shithole together? Idiots… Only one wins! What will you do in the end huh?! WHAT?!" She demanded of the boy. She couldn't lose here, she had to win.

The ploy had worked as Vesa saw Debrah stop and drop the axe where she stood.  Running on pure adrenaline, he didn't think twice about the fact that she was reaching into her pack to pull out a gun.  He kept his own gun leveled at her head, as he stopped about five feet from where Debrah was standing.

"Drop it," he growled, the Beretta pointed at Debrah's temple.  However, Vesa's momentum caused him to run directly into her, the force alone would have been enough to knock her off her feet if he didn't reach out to grab her shirt.  It would have been enough to take a man weighing well in excess of 250 pounds right off his feet...but he caught her in time.  Thinking quickly, the powerful Scandinavian boy turned himself in order to back her up into a nearby door.  If it would cause a boy close to his size to drop the hockey stick he was holding, it would likely cause Debrah tp drop the famed Colt .45 she was holding.

Memorial Arena - Ocean City, New Jersey  -  November 10, 2005

Lance Carter was an avid hockey fan.  The junior at Franklyn Senior School was arguably the biggest sixteen-year-old New Jersey Devils fan in all of Denton, regularly going to home games in East Rutherford and braving the jeers and verbal assaults in Philadelphia to see them take on the Flyers.  Madison Square Garden was one of his favorite venues, and he would give it to New York Ranger fans every time his team scored, and even going as far south as Washington for several Devils-Capitals contests.  If it was on the frozen pond, chances were that Lance knew about it.

And it was Lance that would lead a contingent of Franklyn students to Ocean City on a cool evening in November to watch the two newest teams in the Atlantic Junior Hockey League.  The visiting Rochester Red Hawks had positioned themselves as a midpack team in the North Division, while the home team had quickly became a force to be reckoned with in the South.  The Ocean City Dragons had several good players on the squad, and of those, none were better than the one that Lance and the Franklyn kids had come to see.

About five minutes into the first period, a couple of stragglers took seats next to Lance as the players moved into position for a faceoff near the Dragons' blue line.

"Hey Lance," said one of them, a scrawny-looking boy that appeared to be a sophomore, "which one's our guy?"  The play had picked up and had moved to the other end of the rink.

Lance scoured the ice surface, unable to tell as about a minute had passed.  The puck was shot into the Dragons' zone, where goaltender Jacob Pawlowski stopped the puck for the retreating Branden Wolfe, wearing numbers 31 and 15 respectively.  Once the line change was complete, Lance pointed to one of the players up ice as Branden, a defenseman, advanced the puck forward.

"Number 23 in white," he said, "That's our boy."  One look and his female companion's eyes lit up.

"That's Vesa, the exchange student from Finland!  I've got him in my Academics and PE classes!"  Her male friend, who looked young for a sixteen-year-old junior, made a sour face.

"Oh...Turunen," he groaned, "I can't believe how much Wayland kisses his ass.  You see it, don'tcha Allissa...at least in front of the boys...he's always like 'You guys should take an example from Mr. Turunen and blah blah blah...'  I hate that...fuck Wayland!"  He did his best to imitate the ex-Army sergeant-turned-gym teacher's voice, drawing a giggle from both Lance and Allissa.

"Don't be jealous, Jordan...though I've heard some things about him," said Allissa, her brown hair coming down to about the same point on her as Vesa's blonde locks came down on him.

And then it happened...the Red Hawks took possession of the puck and began to charge.  A pass was thrown to one of the forwards, but it was about a stride ahead of him.  He turned down to try and find the puck, but when he looked up he saw a shoulder aimed straight for his forehead...a shoulder with a black 23 outlined in aqua blue below it.  Suddenly, his arms went flailing, stick flying out of his hands as he hit the ice with a 'thud!' loud enough to be heard from where Lance, Jordan and Allissa were sitting...about the fifth row back just on the Dragons' side of the red center line.

"Whoa, damn!" the boys cried out as Allissa shrieked.  The referee blew his whistle immediately as two Red Hawks charged Vesa, ready to stand up for their fallen comrade.  They got in a couple of punches before the rest of the Dragons stepped in, with Vesa pairing off with Aaron Serrano, a bigger defenseman wearing number 5 in red.

"Who's that down?" Lance asked, reaching for his guide sheet.  He could see that he wore number 17...and when he saw the name and stats, his eyes went wide.  "Whoa...that's Travis Hamlin...says here that he's six-two and weighs about two-ten...and Vesa laid him out like he was nothing!"

Jordan shuddered at the mere thought.  "I knew that kid scared me," he said nervously as the melee continued.  They watched as the linesmen scrambled to try and pry Vesa off of Serrano, the massive Finn pummeling his adversary with hard right hands after he had hit the ice.

"Yeah...Vesa can fight too," said Lance, "I saw a game here against the Rockets and he and Carlson had a go early in the third...it was a good scrap until Vesa got the right hand free."  Soon, order was restored on the ice while Vesa was escorted to the penalty box, saluting the Franklyn gathering that had come to cheer him on...

***************

He knew that his strength alone would be enough to keep the girl from escaping or doing too much damage as he held her against the door.  Vesa peered into those pretty blue eyes of Debrah's...but then he felt a tinge of jealousy come over him.  His mother had blue eyes...his father had blue eyes...so did Aki and Tuomas...but his came out a light brown, almost appearing as if they wanted to be blue but couldn't do so.  A sadistic smile formed on his face as he let go of her hand to open the door.

"Step into the room," said Vesa, trying to maintain a level-headed rage as he picked up the knife, then the axe as he set his pack down.  He kept his own weapon pointed at Debrah the whole time.  "By the way, I forgot to mention that you've got beautiful eyes...it'd be a shame to have to close them.  So just do as I say and I might let you live another five minutes, okay?"

Debrah grimanced as she was lammed into the door, she maintained her grip on her gun. As he ordered her into the room she realized what he was gonna do to her in the next "five minutes". She knew what she had to do.

"Alright..." She whispered, hiding the gun in the back of her jeans she motioned to the door.

"Let's go" She said.

This psycho may kill me but he is not gonna get anyone else.

Her words hit Ricky like a ton of bricks.  It was a scenario he'd thought about over and over again.  What happened if they won?  What happened if they were the last people on the island.  Although he'd already made up his mind that if it happened, he'd allow Whitney to win, he couldn't help but question his resolve.  In the end, could he kill himself and allow her to survive?  Would she be willing to kill him?  What if they didn't even make it to the end...?

"In the end..." he muttered quietly before raising his voice so Mariavel could hear him, "I know only one wins!  If we make it to the end, she'll go home.  That's the point.  I... don't deserve to go home, not after the things I've done here.  It doesn't matter what the reason is.  Murder is murder.  If you can't understand that, then I pity you."

He sighed audibly as the gunshots continued to ring out.  Silently, he wondered just what on earth he'd gotten himself into.  It was like he couldn't do anything right.  Throughout this entire time on the island, anything and everything that had possibly gone wrong could and did.  When he first woke up almost a week ago back on those cliffs, he made a vow to himself to be a leader, not a follower.  He made a vow to himself to find his friends, band together, and figure out a way to escape this game.  As time went on, that scenario seemed less and less likely, and he found himself thinking about escape less and less.

Things looked like they were going to be okay when he ran into Jackie and Gail in the barn.  Back then, he was confident that he could find a way to do the impossible and escape.  Somehow, he'd managed to rally them all together -- Jackie, Gail, and John -- with promises of freedom and some return of normalcy.  Somewhere along the line though, something went wrong.  He wouldn't be able to keep that promise.  Even when they first left the barn, Ricky maintained that sense of confidence that they could do something to retaliate against this game.

Maybe they would've been able to.

Unfortunately, people like the girl shooting at him now, they made Ricky's fantasy come to a grinding halt.  He hadn't really expected people to buy into this game and play.  He certainly hadn't expected the person he considered his best friend to buy in.  If anything, he assumed Eric would be first in line for overthrowing this entire program.  Instead, he wound up trying to kill the girl he knew Ricky was crazy about over some stupid vendetta against one of their classmates... the classmate that Ricky was now trying to avenge because the girl currently trying to kill Ricky had murdered him.

Nothing made sense anymore...

The past week had been hell.  He'd been seperated from his group for just a few short moments, and in that time he had murdered his best friend and lost one of his closest allies.  Come to think of it, he'd lost most of his allies.  Jackie was dead.  Eric was dead.  Kayla was nowhere to be found... he'd probably hear that she had been killed in the next announcement as well.  Matthias would've helped them, but he was gone now.  The only people he had left were Whitney and Gail, and at this moment, he didn't know where Gail had gotten off to.  Odds are, she would probably die too.  Ricky fired off another shot out of pure frustration.

"Nobody had to die!  Nobody had to play this game... but you all bought in, and so many people have died because of it!  It's stupid, can't you see that?  You're just Danya's puppet.  You're bending to his every little whim!  Is that what you want to be?  You want to be a tool for some fucking lunatic terrorist that has no purpose in life but to make sure we all die horribly painful deaths?"

Whitney, meanwhile, had even stopped attempting to plead.  She didn't know what the right thing to do was anymore.  At first, she thought the right thing was to help Matthias, but they couldn't do that anymore.  They'd been too late.  Now, their lives were in danger, and she couldn't help but think that she'd singlehandedly managed to put them in this situation.  She couldn't decide whether Ricky was trying to reason with the girl or whether he was just egging her on.  Either way, she had a bad feeling that this isn't going to end well.

His words bothered her, perhaps even more than Mariavel's taunts.  He'd kill himself so that she could go home... something about that, it just wasn't right.  Sure, he'd done some bad things on the island, but she was there.  She saw with her own eyes that it was an accident, that there was nothing that he could've done to save Eric.  Eric had bought into the game... and he was playing.  If he hadn't landed on his own spear, he would've killed both herself and Ricky.  What else was he supposed to have done?  She wanted to tell him that, to validate the fact that he'd done what he had to do... but she couldn't speak.

"Wow...she must've had a really tight grip on that gun," Vesa thought as he watched Debrah stash it away in her back pocket.  The sounds of screaming could be heard off in the distance, but he didn't know who or where it was coming from; it could be anyone, he thought as he closed the door.  He still had the Beretta leveled at her with one hand while the other held the other weapons as he tossed them over her head and onto the floor at the foot of the bed.

"I thought I told you to drop the gun," he firmly stated, "Don't make me have to do something that I'll end up regretting.  I just want to ask a few questions...tell me the truth and I just might let you go.  But if not..."  Vesa grinned as he lifted his thumb to his throat, then made a slashing motion across it, telling Debrah that he was not in the mood to play games.

Debrah growled as her gun was thrown at the foot of the bed, she turned around as the boy made the slashing motion across his throat.

"I have no idea who you think I am, I did nothing!" She said through clenched teeth. She glanced over at the weapon, if she could only get her hands on it.

((If there's anything that looks like I'm god-modding, it's because Ziggy's given me the green light.  So sit back and watch the blood fly...))

"You may not have done anything yet," Vesa spat back, "but I'm here to make sure you don't."  Debrah was seething as she leveled the gun at Vesa's torso.  She was not expecting him to blame her for something she didn't do...yet the boy terrified her on so many levels as he bent down to pickup the axe.  Her hand was shaking, trying to fire at Vesa as she frantically pulled the trigger...but nothing happened.  She looked down at the pistol and saw that the safety was on, but did so just as Vesa pushed her up against the wall, pinning her to it with the axe.

"Wh-what...what do you want from me?" pleaded Debrah.

A smile formed on Vesa's face as he eyed her.  "I just want to ask you something..."  He retreated to give Debrah room to come out, but she was soon met with the barrel of the Beretta pointed at her chest.  With a nod and a wave of the hand, he motioned toward the door.  "Where's Matti?"

"M-Matti?  I don't know who you're talking about..."  The time it took Debrah to answer the question was enough to allow her to disengage the safety.  She now had an answer for Vesa as she raised her gun up.

"I said, put it down..."  Vesa was serious as he fired a warning shot just above Debrah's head, causing her to shriek.  "I won't tell you again...I said, where's Matti?  He's about...your height...brown hair...kinda thin...Matthias Kovalenko?  Does the name ring a bell?"

Though she was scared for her life, the girl didn't back down, even showing a hint of defiance as she fired the Colt .45 at him.  "Go to hell, you psycho..."

"Psycho?"  Vesa dropped the axe behind him and began feeling about Debrah's hips.  He gasped when he came across something...which turned out to be a severed hand.  An incredulous look came over Vesa as he studied the bracelet on her wrist, stained with the blood of her twin sister as he tossed it aside.  "You carry around a severed hand...of someone that YOU killed...and I'm psycho?"

A shiver raced through Debrah as he made the discovery.  "Deliah..." she whispered.

"Deliah?"  Vesa perked up, clutching the axe tighter.

"She...she..."  Debrah was beginning to well up, head dropping in shame...the thought of the sister she longed for coming back to her.  "No..."

But Vesa picked up on her right away, leveling the gun to her head.  "Is there something that you're hiding?"  Shaking her head, Debrah didn't respond.  Instead, she pointed the .45 back at Vesa and was ready to fire on him.  But she was too slow as Vesa fired two shots, one aimed at each shoulder.  They found their mark, causing her to scream, the pain shooting through her arms and into her torso as she dropped the gun.  Seizing the opportunity, Vesa kicked the gun toward the door and left her defenseless.  Debrah tried to find the will to fight back as she kicked at Vesa, but the searing pain was starting to break her will as well.

"So this is it...?  I wanted to be with you...find you so we could be together again...and this is how it has to be."

"Tell me!  Where's Matti...and who is this Deliah?"  Vesa was in no mood to reminisce as he dropped the Beretta and went for the axe.

"Yes...that's it, Vesa...use the axe..."

Wanting to make doubly sure, he also took the knife and placed it against Debrah's throat.  He remembered the encounter with the girl in the forest, so this was a mere threat as a sadistic grin formed on Vesa's face.  "I'm not gonna ask again...you tell me..."  He pressed the cold blade against her throat a little harder, barely close to the point of breaking skin.  "...or the last thing you'll see is your blood pouring out onto the floor here."  Desperate to get away, Debrah lifted her head and screamed, kicking Vesa back a couple feet.

"All right!" she shrieked, "All right, I'll fucking tell you!  I followed...Matti...or whoever he was, in here...I don't know where he went after that.  And Deliah..."  She started to sob lightly, a result of the intense pain from the gunshots and the guilt that he was bringing out.  "...Deliah...was...my sister...my twin sister."  Hearing this made Vesa drop his weapons, hitting the floor with a muffled clank on the carpet.

"Your...twin?"  Vesa couldn't believe what he was hearing.  "You killed her..."  He turned away, shaking his head as the thought made him sick inside.  A new rage started to build inside the towering Finn as he picked up the axe.  "Why?"  No answer.  "What would drive you to kill your own sister...?"  Still nothing.  "Don't you lie to me...I heard the announcement...and now you'd better tell me..."

Despite the pain, Debrah found the will to smile at her assailant as he asked that question.  "You have no idea..." she said, pointing at the axe Vesa held firmly in his hands.  "I thought I could trust her with anything...SHE LIED TO ME!  Don't you know what it's like to be thrown into the fucking dirt like that?!?  Don't you know what it's like to have the closest one you have to you tell you 'I love you' with one breath and then spit in your face?  Do you?  DO YOU?!?"

Vesa's head began quivering again...he could take it no longer.  "Te alhainen hylkyjoukko..." (You vile piece of scum...) he growled, ""TULEE PUUKOSTA!" (I'll cut you up!)  With bloodshot eyes, Vesa swung the axe with full force, connecting with Debrah's thigh.  She let out a piercing scream, which only fueled the demonic laughter that came from Vesa as he swung again, the blade digging deep down to the bone as an even louder scream filled the room.  Satisfied with his handiwork so far, he threw down the axe and went for his diver's knife, grabbing Debrah by the collar of her shirt and made a downward slash, splitting her shirt in half.

"No..." coughed Debrah as she was exposed, the knife splitting her bra and leaving her breasts open, "I didn't mean..."

But Vesa wasn't buying it as he plunged the knife into her upper chest, aiming for the jugular, followed by another scream.  He then threw her down to the floor and gripped the knife as if it were a pencil.  "You did too...don't you fucking lie!  And now, we're both getting our wish...you're gonna be reunited with your sister soon.  And me...I'm gonna save Matti from your fiendish plot...and I will teach the world..."  He began carving letters into her chest and stomach, feeding off the screams as Debrah coughed up blood from her throat.  "...pelätä...Etsiä...Katti..." (Fear...the Hunting Cat)  Vesa rose above her when he was done, grinned while tossing the knife aside.  "PELÄTÄ...ETSIÄ KATTI!!!"  Debrah began to slowly fade out...but as she did, she could sense Deliah's presence as she smiled, while Vesa admired his work, the words "PELÄTÄ ETSIÄ KATTI" carved into her chest and stomach.

"I'm sorry, Deliah...I didn't want to do that to you...but I didn't know what to do."

Another voice answered her back.

"It's okay, Debrah...I wanted this.  Now we will be together again...forever."

Debrah smiled as she watched Vesa seizing her rations...or what little there was left...and as she looked up at him, she smiled.  "Thank...you..." she murmured before her eyes closed, never to reopen again.  But Vesa wasn't done yet as he stored the rations in his pack and zipped it up again.  He seized the Colt pistol he kicked by the door and stashed it away along with his Beretta, then set the axe on the bed as he hefted it onto his shoulders.  Then he reached for Debrah's body and dragged it by an arm in one hand while taking the axe in the other, setting it down to open the door.

Peering out into the hall, Vesa could hear gunshots...but he had it set in his mind to leave his calling card on whoever would enter the hotel.  Dragging the corpse, he found a stairway by the arch and used it to gain access to the second floor.  Seeing nobody around, he set his pack down to go back downstairs to retrieve Debrah, lugging her over his shoulders as he made the climb up the stairs again.  A smile formed on his face as he saw that there was a catwalk connecting to another wing of the hotel.  He threw his pack toward the adjacent wing before taking the corpse to it.  Looking over the catwalk, he made sure that it was aligned with the door before opening his sack.  He remember the rolls of tape he took from the hospital and grinned widely; with great precision, he draped the body over the edge, and began taping her wrist to the railing.  Once secured, he was able to do a better job, tearing off strip after strip with a sadistic laugh.

"Hah...now you won't be able to hurt anyone else," he sneered coldly, "not..."  He then heard another gunshot and jumped, the reality beginning to set back in again.  "MATTI!  Matti, I'm coming!"

If only he knew that he killed the wrong girl...that he was too late and Matthias was already dead...and that the real killer was still at large...

Mariavel didn't understand how someone like this boy could just continue to try to escape this hell. It made no sense. It's impossible to escape, can't he see that? He said he'd let the girl go home. How foolish. This is a game of survival…. Did he really believe that he could simply bypass the game? Fool….

Or was she the true fool?

She'd lost so much here… She lost all sight of Tori and Bryan. She had no Idea where they could be right now. Seth had long since disappeared. She only hoped he was okay. Lavender… Lavvy was dead… dead because she couldn't find her in time. And now… she'd lost her sense of self. Murdering for no reason… It was horrid. But she… she had to survive, if only to carry on the names of those who lost their lives to this sadistic game.

Mariavel turned the corner to fire at the duo, only to be met with a bullet grazing her cheek. She screamed in agony and held her face. She hid around the corner again and felt the blood seep through her fingers. It wasn't much, but it still hurt like hell. The boy said some more words to her and she responded with venom in her words.

"You think you're the only ones who've lost people? If you really think you're the only ones… then you're no better than anyone else here! My best friend… My best friend was killed! Killed because I couldn't save her in time! Because I was too weak!" She screamed out, tears flowing from her eyes, and her voice more than showing it.

"I hate this game! When I escape I'll murder Danya! I'll kill him!" She cried out. "That's why I'll play his game… Because I have to avenge Lavvy…. And I have to save that little girl! I promised!"

She turned the corner and fired at the hidden duo. She fired 5 shots, emptying the pistol's clip. She hid herself again and quickly replaced it.

Ricky simply shook his head and let out an disbelieving laugh as the girl continued to fight back, now more with her words than her gun.  At this point, she seemed anything but calm.  She was screaming and yelling, letting her emotions get the best of her.  The things she was saying really made no sense.  In fact, the more she talked, the more delusional it appeared she was.

"You think you're gonna kill Danya?" he retorted amusedly, "Are you honestly naive enough to think you're the first person out here to think that they're gonna survive this game just so they can kill Danya?  I'm sure you saw the last game... you saw the guy who won going on and on about how the first thing he was gonna do when he got off the island was slit Danya's throat.  How could you not have seen it?  Everybody saw it.  I hate to point out the obvious, but he obviously didn't succeed, because Danya's still alive.  Are you stupid enough to think that you'll succeed where he failed?"

The same could be said about you, Callahan.  Are YOU genuinely stupid enough to think that you can escape this game?  Are you genuinely stupid enough to think that you can protect her?  You're both going to die.  You don't have what it takes to take her to the end.  Even if you did, that would mean forfeiting everybody else's lives for her.  Is she worth it?  Do you really think that?

He'd managed to tune out the taunting, doubting voice for a while, but all of a sudden it was back with a vengeance.  It made a very valid point, though.  In order for Ricky to accomplish his goal and send Whitney home, he'd have to sacrifice Gail, Kayla, and every other ally he might meet along the way.  He'd have to be willing to let them die just so that she could go home.  And then what?  This was no fairytale, he wouldn't get his happy ending no matter what.  If he made it to the end, he could send her home, and she'd go on to live a normal life... without him.

Or, he could win.  He could forfeit everybody else's lives, look out solely for himself, and maybe, just maybe, manage to luck out and make it back home.  He cast a sidelong glance at his blonde-headed companion.  Looking out for number one... it hardly seemed worth it.  He had a family to return to, but what made him any different from every other student on the island?  They all had families too.  What made him more worthy of returning to that family than any of them were?  The truth was, protecting her gave him some sense of purpose that he didn't have before.  It made going through this program worth it.

Mariavel kept yelling about vengeance and protection, and Ricky couldn't help but see the parallel in his own actions.  The two were a lot alike, although they'd chosen very different paths in the game.  This girl, she was obviously a murderer.  Maybe even the one whose name he seemed to hear in every announcement.  The truth was, he didn't really know.  He stood idly behind the wall, allowing the girl to fire off the remainder of her clip.  He, however, didn't return fire.  This was pointless, and they were wasting ammunition.

Instead, Ricky checked the cartridge on his gun, confirming that it had just a bit of ammunition left inside.  There was no point in reloading it.  He returned the clip to its place and dropped his pack to the side.  They had two choices.  They could escape down the corridor and hope that they didn't encounter the girl on one of the other floors of the hotel, or he could walk into her line of fire and hope he could manage to kill her before she eliminated him.  Part of him was opting for the latter.  It seemed like the most effective way to end this confrontation.

"Whit... I'm going out there," he voiced finally.

"What?" she responded in disbelieve, "You can't, that's crazy!"

"I don't know what else to do..." he stated quietly.

"Let's just leave!" she retorted, "There's no need for this... we couldn't save Matthias, nobody else needs to die."

Ricky simply shook his head.  It seemed like there was no other course of action.  If he let her go, he'd probably just run into her again under worse circumstances.  He turned again to look around the corner, and Whitney grabbed his wrist.  It didn't matter what he thought was the best course of action, she wasn't going to let him go through with it.  It was insane.

"Don't," she squeaked out quietly, "Please?  Don't go..."

Ricky sighed audibly and lowered his gun.  Maybe they should just run and hope for the best.  He didn't have long to ponder on it until the PA systems sparked alive, blaring out a familiar Queen song.  A look of confusion spread across his features for just a moment, and then Danya's voice perked up on the system.  Ricky let out a groan and took his attention off of Mariavel for a moment to focus on the announcement.

Mariavel was answered by two rounds fired over the area she sought refuge in.  Standing in the hall near where Ricky and Whitney were situated, holding a Colt .45 in one hand, and a blood-covered axe in the other...was none other than Vesa Turunen.  He quickly stepped back to stash it away, only to produce the Beretta, to which he had become quite fond of.

"Come out!" he bellowed loudly, glancing around the room from around the corner.  He looked down at himself...and he could see the blood from the girl he had just killed drizzled over the wolf's fangs.  A grin started to slowly form on Vesa's face as he stood tall again, firing once more to get Mariavel's attention as he slowly entered.  He knew he was putting himself in harm's way, but he was still on a quest...not knowing that he had already failed as he rushed to the side of his two friends.  If he knew, then he would have charged straight ahead after Mariavel...but circumstances and lack of knowledge forced him to use caution as he sized up the situation again.

"Okay, so we messed up...she didn't really put of that much of a fight.  My bad...now, that girl over there...that's your target, Vesa..."

"Minä taitaa..." (I know..) whispered Vesa to himself as he looked down at the two.  "Ricky...Whitney...thank God you two are okay.  Where's Matti?"  But just as Vesa asked that, he heard Ricky go off on Mariavel...a rebuttal on her proclamation that she was going to find and kill Danya and put an end to it all.  "She really said that?" he thought, "Wow...if anyone could've done it from the last game, it was Jenson...the defenseman-turned-sociopath.  Too bad he got knocked off by Adam at the very end...or was it a good thing?"  He then turned back to Whitney as Ricky continued to ramble on.

"What is he talking about?" he asked

Then he heard Ricky announce that he was charging out.  Vesa shook his head as he reached out to try and grab him.  "What the fuck...Ricky...?  No, don't!"  If his fears were indeed reality...and Matthias was already dead...then his next objective would be straightforward: kill Mariavel at any cost.  But he wasn't about to let his only friends left jeopardize themselves as Whitney voiced her objection to Ricky's intentions.  He stood back as Whitney grabbed his wrist, which gave him the chance to make HIS intentions known.

"Ricky!  Whitney!  You guys get the hell outta here!  I'll deal with this one myself."  Just as he said that, he heard the loudspeaker crackle and come to life as well as he gestured behind him.  "I'll meet up with you guys later...but if I don't make it, don't wait for too long."

It wouldn't be long before Vesa would hear the news that he had feared...

((I'll leave the playing of the announcement open to you, Meg...so break it to him gently, 'kay?))

Mariavel screamed out as two bullets flew over her head. She was glad she was sitting down. Another shot was fired and it skimmed Mariavel's arm. She cursed audibly, but the pain subsided quickly. Must be the adrenaline rush she was having. Ricky yelled at Mariavel again and she was just about to respond, just when the announcements rang out. She heard something that she defiantly didn't want to. She had missed her chance to avenge Lavvy. Stephanie Crew had committed Suicide.

"No! No, no, no, no, no!" She cried out. Her wails sounded as if a child was having a temper tantrum. It was so… Innocent.

"I was supposed to… I was… I was supposed to avenge her!" She cried. "I'm sorry Lavvy! Forgive me! I'm so useless! Just like Tanesha said! Just like it!"

"Who's gonna miss me if I die out here? WHO?! No one will miss a gang-girl like me! Not even Mommy!" She cried.

"Lavvy! Only you loved me Lavvy! And I let you get killed! I'm so sorry!" It had finally hit Mariavel after days on the island. She'd had so much taken away from her. Lavvy was gone forever. Only Lavvy loved Mariavel. Lavvy was the best friend anyone could ask for. And she was gone.

"I'm sorry…. I'm so sorry!" she looked at the corpse of Matthias Kovalenko not too far away. "I'm sorry… but I'll protect that little girl for you!" She whispered to herself.

She stood and grabbed the rifle. The magazine had a ways to go before it was through. She shoved the pistol into her pants and left her spot in the corner. She set her eyes on the three.

"It's all or nothing now. How will you be remembered?" The tears continued to flow down her face as she asked the group that question. She didn't point the rifle at them, but would if they attacked. Her daypack wasn't too far away, she could easily reach it if she had to run.

((To Meg - Nevermind, I think I'll take it from here...though you can make it known to him anyway.  And to you, Mitsuko...does Mariavel have Ernest's ball of twine?  I think it'd come in pretty handy for anything that he'll do later...but if you do, I'll edit the post so as not to have it.))

"Yes..." hissed Vesa when he grazed Mariavel's arm with the last shot he fired.  Then he turned to Ricky and Whitney while she was still tending to herself.  "Go, now!  Go while she's down...I'll take it from here!"  It was at that moment that Danya's voice boomed across the loudspeaker as Vesa inched closer to see the results of his hit.  When he peered around the corner, he saw that Mariavel had only been grazed, causing him to make a hasty retreat to the end of the hall where his friends were.

"Damn!"

It was at that moment that the announcement of Stephanie's death was made, reducing Mariavel to a whiny, regretful little girl.  But Vesa was able to pick something out of his peripheral vision...and while Mariavel was in the midst of her tantrum, Vesa went over to investigate what it was.  When he got there, he pointed the Beretta forward, expecting to see someone jump out.  But when nothing happened, he just gave an uneasy roll of his shoulders

"Hmm...must be seeing things," he said to himself as he returned to where Ricky and Whitney were...just in time to hear the news that he dreaded to hear.

First, it came straight from the horse's mouth  -  ""I'm sorry…. I'm so sorry!  I'm sorry… but I'll protect that little girl for you!"  The adrenaline that ran through Vesa's veins had a different effect; it made his senses more acute as he was able to pick up Mariavel's whispering from a considerable distance.  Immediately, his eyes widened and tears started to form in them.

"No...you didn't...I thought..."

Then it was confirmed  -  "Matthias Kovalenko is next on our list of the dead, killed by the beautiful Miss Varella..."

Vesa took one look at Mariavel, his jaw dropping slightly as he fought the urge to break down right there.  "No...Matti...?  I-I...I..."

To add further insult to the pain of losing whom he considered his best friend, Vesa had to endure one more stinging announcement from Danya.  -  Next down was Debrah Dollop, killed by Vesa Turunen. Hear that, Mr. Turunen? You got the wrong girl. You murdered an innocent young lady..."

He could no longer take it.  "EI!  NYT KULUVA OLLA TAPAHTUMAT!" (No!  This can't be happening!) screamed Vesa as he turned and nearly threw the axe completely through the back wall, tears flowing steadily down his cheek as he pointed the Beretta at Mariavel while she reached for the rifle.  "Get out!" he pleaded desperately to his companions, "Get out while you still can!"  Then he stood in front of them while staring down Mariavel.

"Joten jumalauta..." (So help me, God...) he murmured to himself after her tirade, "I will be remembered as the one that killed you...that put an end to your reign of terror.  I will be remembered as the one that avenged the death of my best friend, unlike you...oh, and by the way, who else have you killed in the week since we've been on this God forsaken island?"  And then it hit him like a ton of bricks.

"Remember Ovechkin...y'know, your so-called "hero?"  There's your girl again...you could knock off two birds with one stone by knocking her off."

Vesa shook his head when the realization came to him.  "You killed Alex...you killed the best hockey player in the world."  His hand was quivering as he fought the urge to raise his pistol and shoot, knowing that she could kill him with a well placed shot from that rifle in her hand.  "I was looking forward to playing against him...or maybe even with him.  He was my friend as well...and you took him, not just from me...but from the whole world.  What do you have to say to that?"  Vesa tensed up, ready to retreat to the safety of his corner as he awaited a response with the pistol at his side.

(Ed's Note: Guess Ernest wasn't around the bend after all...thanks for pointing that out, Mitsuko.  I should probably pay more attention, eh?)
