Survival Of The Fittest

Desiree cleared her throat and rejoined Violet on the planchette with shaky hands. She waited for the crackling to cease before speaking again.

"N-next question."

Okay.

Violet was doing a little better now.

"I hope you're still with us, Mr. Spirit."



"What was your occupation, when you were alive?"

There it was. Student. Whatever conception Desiree had on Violet fucking with her was mostly gone with the window breaking on its own, but now it was all gone with that one word. A shiver ran through her.

She desired more.

Desiree nodded her head, urging Violet to continue with another question.

Violet felt a cold shiver run down her back. Student? Student? What kind of student? Where was her mind going?

She wanted to ask how the student died but that was taboo. Who the hell were they talking to? What was going on?

Panic. Panic was setting in. Violet had to be sure that she didn't panic.



"Um..."

"What kind of student? I mean, what level of school? Elementary, middle, high, college, graduate, um, yeah?"

"...Sent over sea?" Desiree mumbled to herself, eyes on her jittery hands. "That's not the fucking question."

In hindsight, maybe that was a little rude. Dad was gonna be ever so pissed if the ghosts assassinated another window; she gave a quick "Sorry." Hopefully that was enough to not piss their guests off even moreso.

But still... what a weird phrase. Desiree hemmed and hawed, but she couldn't come up with anything; she'd have to ask Violet for her input.

"...Does this mean anything to you? I don't get it," she scoffed and shook her head.

She had to agree with Desiree there. Violet didn't entirely appreciate the spirit going around the original meaning, but she figured it must have had a reason to do so, right? Sent over sea... who was a student, sent over sea? Sea, exactly, or just water? To a watery grave? She was out of ideas. Boarding school? Transfer student?

Students were usually only sent over sea to be an exchange student or something if they were in high school, right? That's what Violet would interpret this as meaning.




"Where did you go overseas to?"

Maybe it was time to find someone that did, then. Surely if this dude came with 2 other guys they were a package deal. That was how summonings worked, right?

Desiree wasn't gonna wait to find out. "Then can we talk to one of your friends?" Surely being bold like that wasn't taboo, but they broke a window anyway so what's the worst that could happen?

"We don't have to really ask," Violet said, looking at Desiree sweetly.



"It's been nice, o spirit, but we no longer wish to speak with you. Goodbye."


Violet waited for the planchette to move.

Desiree stared at the planchette, snuck a quick look at Violet, and returned to the planchette as she carefully pushed it to the "Goodbye" zone.

She nodded her head and shuffled herself around in her seat. She closed her eyes. Inhale. Exhale. It was time for Round 2.

"...I wanna ask the questions this time," she said to Violet.

Without waiting for a proper answer she began her first question. "All right, we know you're there, so can you just say 'hi' or give us a sign or whatever?"

Her right hand tingled.

Before she knew it, Desiree dismissed the spirit for her. Moving the planchette to goodbye forcefully didn't have any negative results as far as Violet knew, but it was a little rude.

Desiree declared her interest in asking the questions this time, Violet nodded, got things set up, and they got a hello in short order.

Much less formal than the last one, too. Not unlike the proceedings here. Definitely a different ghost. Violet's fingertips were burning up and she wanted to take her fingers away. There was not enough time between contacts, but she didn't want to speak up now. They were having fun, right? It's just a bit of fun, right?

She wasn't thinking of her dead chinchilla, so this was as good as anything, right? Right?

Violet focused her energy into the planchette.

"Okay, uh... hi."

That was easy. Desiree stewed on how exactly to proceed from here since they were basically cold calling.

Maybe the direct approach was best. "Are you with the last spirit?"
