(Erin Clyde) Beyond Just Late
Posted: Wed Sep 12, 2018 7:45 am
Erin woke to a loud piercing sound, a sound that could raise the dead if it was just a little louder. No it wasn't an alarm, her alarm had been going on for about an hour now, Erin just hadn't been able to respond to it, not even to hit the snooze button. The sound was the hellish sound of a banshee, a relic of years gone by, a memory who thinks itself the present. Her mother's voice, the sound that frightens the devil himself into submission.
"Why are you still here? If you get held back young lady then I will throw you out on the street with the disgusting father of yours."
Erin lifted her head from her pillow and stared blankly at the clock, she was indeed late, but what was her mother expecting, she had been kept up all night listening to her mother be raid her father for this and that, it's a miracle that he stays with her. He had left last night, another poor victim of the tyrant that is her mother. By the time she had gotten to sleep the sky had begun to brighten, not to mention she fell asleep with her face in her pillow, she can never get up when she does that.
Erin pushed herself up and tried to stand, her alarm still blaring she stumbled her way to the bathroom and looked in the mirror. Her hair was a mess, her looked oily, and her eyes where completely red. He mothers face snapped behind her, she was a tall frail looking women with long nails, a birdlike nose, tons of make up, and long grey hair.
"You had better clean up! Get into the shower now young lady."
I know MOTHER!
Erin knew if she took a shower she would be even more late, however she just shook her head and replied with a soft. "Yes mother."
"And I want you to wear one of those nice skirts you own, no jeans today, they look ugly on a lady of your upbringing."
It's supposed to be chilly today, she expects me to wear that skirt?
She couldn't question her mother though, she just got into the shower, her mother watching with scornful eyes as punishment for her being late. She normally wakes up before her mother and leaves before she wakes up, damn her mother. As she stepped out of the show her mother grabbed her arm and pulled her to the mirror.
"Your hair is always to messy, I'm going to comb it."
I comb my hair just fine MOTHER.
"Yes mother."
She wrapped herself in a towel and was forced to take a seat her mother had grabbed as she was putting the towel on. After about 10 minutes of her hair being combed and her drifting in and out her mother talking about whatever her mother talked about she remembered school.
She's gonna make me later.
"Mom I have to hurry."
"Right, go get dressed lady."
Erin ran into her room and snuck her jeans into her backpack before her mother could enter her room. Her mother then picked out each article of clothing. By the time she was done Erin was way to late, much later then she would have been if she had just gotten ready herself. As she left the house her mothers only words to her were "And don't get your clothes dirty, they are very expensive young lady."
Drop dead MOTHER.
"Of course mother, love you." She shut the door behind her, her backpack in hand. She left the house without anything to eat, tired, in a skirt on a chilly day, and of course angry as hell.
Normally she would take a nice brisk jog to school, but this morning she was running, although it was already almost noon. By the time she reach the campus of the school she was out of energy, she was wiped out, she hadn't gotten any sleep and her mother had tucked at her all morning. She sat on a bench, she knew she shouldn't, it was a bit chilly and the school was right there, but she closed her eyes and then she was sleeping on the bench, her backpack now a pillow. As she slept she started crying, even in her sleep she couldn't escape her mothers anger and shame.

about 45 minutes later

Erin sat up and stretched, she now felt more rested and energized. It no longer felt chilly and the sun was bright. It now seemed like a lovely day.
"The sky is so lovely today, I guess all I really needed was some rest."
Erin stretched as she said this, only for one word stop snap into her head.
School.
With that Erin got up and turned to the large building.
Crap I'm going to be even more late. I obviously missed math class, I should stop by the main office and tell them I'm here, if I explain myself calmly I may be able to get away with a warning.
Erin picked up her backpack and took out a mirror and comb, she fixed her hair quickly so that it was even, put the comb and mirror back and walked into the building confident and proud. She entered the office and told her story, shamefully omitting the part about falling asleep. They called her mother to check her story, but her mother just said yes without thinking about the fact that an extra 45 minutes had passed. Erin gave a smile, a sincere apology for being a bother, took her hall pass and left.
