Boredom.

It was something Kallie Majors came into contact with far too often. Then again, boredom was a definite improvement over the events of the weekend. Calling them "dramatic" might just have been the understatement of the year. Friday night had been terrific, at least, until Jeff had called her demanding that she come pick him up because his car was torn up.

Thinking back on it, Kallie almost wished she would have left him sitting on the side of the road. She loved her brother -- at least, in the sense that she had to because he was family -- but things with him had gone downhill around the time she turned sixteen. She'd started seeing one of his friends, he didn't like it, and things went south from there. At least, that was the gist of it. There was a lot more to the story, but it wasn't even worth recalling. It had been so long ago.

Jeff just couldn't seem to let it go, though. The first thing he had said to her when she took time out of her Friday night to go pick him up off the side of the road was, "You need to put some clothes on, you look like a slut". At that moment, she had heavily considered kicking the car into reverse and leaving him there by himself, but because he was her brother, she had hung around and taken him home.

She didn't bother going inside the apartment, seeing as she was sure he'd just complain about her being around his roommates, and she really hadn't bothered to say all that much to him over the course of the short trip. That small event had basically wrecked her whole weekend, and as she thought back on it now, she couldn't see why she had let it bother her so much.

Sunday had been completely uneventful. The original plan was that she was going to head up to the hospital and drop in on Darnell. He'd gotten pretty messed up in the fight on Friday night, from what she'd heard. She felt bad because she hadn't even been around to see it, and the poor guy wound up being hospitalized over it all. The least she could have done was drop by with a "get well soon" card or something.

He was someone she considered a friend, after all. Maybe acquaintance would be more the word, but she felt like she should at least acknowledge the poor guy. As the day went on, though, she managed to talk herself out of going. She didn't know him all that well, and she was sure the people who were better labelled his friends were probably up there with him anyway. So, she'd simply stayed home and enjoyed the day off from school.

Unfortunately, now she was back again, and that pure, unadulterated boredom that often seemed to come with school was coursing through her. She had arrived a little bit early so she was trying to take the opportunity to catch up on some of the homework she'd completely neglected to do over the weekend.

She was currently lying on one of the many benches around the edge of the gazebo, staring blankly at the history book in front of her. She couldn't bring herself to finish the essay questions Coach Whittenburg had assigned them. History was so dull and boring. Why study the past, anyway? It was all over and done with. But, that certainly wasn't how the school system saw it, and unfortunately, it was a required course.

She sighed audibly and brushed a strand of bright blonde hair out of her face before idly flicking her pencil against the end of her notebook. She let out a light yawn and used her free hand to hold her hair away from her face. No matter how many times she reread the question in front of her, she didn't care any more than the last time she read it.

There was no possible way to make this stuff interesting. American history was incredibly lame. She had preferred World History so much more. At least with it, you weren't studying about the same boring people doing the same stupid things. They'd been teaching history since something like fourth grade. It's not like it was going to change anytime soon.

"Christ..." Kallie uttered quietly, wishing something would disrupt her from having to do this ridiculous homework.
