Dr. Dan the Medicine Man

Although it's called a hospital, it's really more of an island clinic. It's a relatively small building, covered in whites and pastels to give it a clean and sterile look. Even the waiting rooms and the patient rooms in the back beg for a little color. The cupboards and cabinets still contain various medications prescribed by clinic physicians. It's the opportune place to head if you're needing to tend to a few wounds -- it's also the opportune place to head if you're set on picking off the weak links.

((continued from God Almighty))

There had to be painkillers at the hospital, right? After departing from the school, Dan found his side acting up again and opted to head for the small white building. He was still in fair fighting condition, and with both Ed's stun gun and the field hockey stick added to his arsenal he was feeling much more confident. Still, the burning sensation in his ribs from being thrice electrocuted bore heavily on him. He decided that he would do well to try and alleviate the intense pain, since he'd been given the convenient opportunity. Also it was really kicking up like a bitch, now.

He didn't see anybody in the immediate vicinity, and the rickety door had been left open. It clacked liesurely against the wooden siding. Cautiously he trudged up to the doorway and peeked in, stun gun at the ready. Nobody there anymore, but the place had definitely been resided in over the past couple days.

"Hello?"

'Good enough.' Dan closed the door behind him and threw his gear on a small table in the corner. He dug through a few cabinets, favouring his side, until he finally came upon a basic analgesic that looked like it would do the trick. Flopping himself back down on the adjacent chair and opening the pill bottle, Dan took two and washed it down with some water from his pack. He was hungry, and helped himself to a generous amount of unsatisfying crackers.

'Well that really, didn't...fucking, hit the spot at all,' he thought to himself.

((Continuada dal "Sacrilege," Pagoda))

It was the last place that the weary Roland Thomas Kelly had expected to find in Purgatory. Even after the industrial wasteland and the heathen pagoda, this halfway house to heaven still had many surprises in store for his holy quest to rid himself of his inner Damien.

Still, it was surprising for Roland to come across a hospital as he emerged from a clearing. It was also a surprisingly small structure at that, compared to the deluge of industria and the towering pagoda. A surprisingly small, surprisingly plain one at that. He gave it a quick visual inspection from where he was standing, before dropping to the ground prone, his new daypack and holy scepter clattering down with him.

Shit. Oh shit, I said shit! Shit, I said it again! Aww...just shut up...

So much for stealth. He got himself back up to a crouching position and made like the 101st Airborne to the closest wall of the building, coming to a stop just below a large window. Roland kept all his equipment close, expecting (Damien in) a Kraut (helmet) to run around the next corner, or worse - leap out of the window and eviscerate him in a fury of glass and demonic fury.

In his mind, Roland was thoroughly convinced that the only person in this literally God-forsaken place other than him was the wandering spirit of the boy he had tortured through neutrality ever since that strange creature enrolled in Gilroy Academy. How Roland died and got here he no longer could or cared to remember, because now that he was dead, the only way to go was (also literally) up...or down. And that depended on if he could get rid of the spirit that haunted him.

Roland raised his head to take a peek through the window. The mere presence of anybody inside whatever room he was looking through would confirm that Damien was close by.

He was already convinced that Damien was still alive...especially given that he still heard the Voice saying that Damien was still alive and killing. Of course, killing two of Damien's other forms - an ugly beast and an innocent girl - and still not arriving at the Pearly Gates for it was also convincing enough. That he could still feel the disfiguring pain of sulphuric acid melting away a quarter of his face still crackling under the bandages was also a sign that he hadn't earned salvation quite yet.

On the contrary, it seemed to occur to him less that it wasn't just getting rid of Damien that got him into heaven in the first place.

Almost as convincing, it seemed, as the large figure that he noticed inside. He ducked as soon as he made out the figure's shape, because the figure would also have noticed his messed-up flop-top haircut. On the way to noticing the figure he also noticed a small electric device - similar to a tazer - and a long stick of sorts, which he hoped was wooden or otherwise not harder than brass.

Without another word, Roland started sneaking off the first direction that came to mind - which just happened to lead to the clinic's front door.

The announcements came on. Dan was in no hurry to leave...there was really nowhere to go. He sat back in his chair, putting his feet up and adjusting his baseball cap with his free hand. His other held the stun gun; it hung leisurely at his side.

It bothered him that it no longer bothered him hearing about the deaths of his former fellow Franklynites.

It came as no surprise that (this late in the game) Danya was tightening his grip on the island. There were new perma-dangerzones, the lighthouse, the pagoda, and the church. He had no intentions of visiting any of those places, but just to be on the safe side he withdrew his map and jotted them down. He tossed the map and pencil absentmindedly back onto the table when he was finished.

'Well, I've made it this far,' he thought, trying not to let it go to his head. He'd be lying, though, if he said he wasn't a lot more confident than he'd been to start with. Then again...

Roland made it to the side of the clinic's front entrance and took a deep breath. He waited several seconds - which turned into minutes - for Damien to come out...but there was no response. He peeked in...and Damien did not suddenly lunge at him and rip his face off.

With a sigh he leaned back on the wall and tried to relax himself. The pain on his face was but a crackling or a light sizzling as the skin cells started to heal over, but it was still there, reminding him that he had yet to attain salvation. He didn't doubt that killing this Damien would bring him closer to that, and he would certainly accept it if it didn't get him into paradise.

Roland gulped and got up, moving his scepter to the ready and his daypack to his sides. He unzipped it before sneaking into the building, careful not to clang his scepter on the doorways or any of the hallway walls. There were still three holy hand grenades in them to help him smite Damien and he would not hesitate to use any of them should he have to.

May the grace of the Lord protect me...

Dan sat up. There was someone at the door. They were being very quiet, very careful, but ultimately they'd been made by the thin line of morning light that crawled down the hallway and widened tenfold.

Dan licked his teeth, his grip tightening on the stun gun. Quietly he got up from his chair and crept towards the opposite wall, pressing his back against it and leaning towards the doorway adjacent to him. He left the field hockey stick propped up against the table. Now he had the jump on this sucker; even in the event that this intruder was packing heat, he wouldn't be able to use the advantage of range with Dan suddenly right beside him. His ribs kicked up again, but it was duller than usual. The painkillers were taking effect. He waited.

'The doctor is in, motherfucker.'

Roland found himself glued to the wall as he made his way through the small clinic room, the tension building and his jaw clenching tighter and tighter. If the bandages came off, the look on the mutilated side of his face would make any weak-hearted individual lose bladder control. Damien was getting closer and closer, and Roland could sense the creature's ominous presence charging up his very soul.

He eventually ended up at the doorway to what he believed was the room where he saw Damien taking shelter. It was almost expected that he peered in and saw it empty from his angle, but didn't stick his head through the doorway. Given that he didn't see Damien move out of the room as he made his way in, the only logical option was that the creature was already in wait to ambush Roland on his way in. Supernatural powers aside, he was surprised that Damien hadn't pierced through the wall with that long meleé weapon he'd spotted.

Are you getting desperate, hellspawn?

Keeping his attention in the doorway, his free hand slipped and slithered into his daypack and felt for one of his holy canisters. As silently as he moved it in, Roland withdrew it. Of course, silence was relative, as Roland could hear his own heart thumping as well as his own breathing as the flashbang came out into the open. The fire on his cheek merged with that on his neck and burned hotter than brimstone. The sound of his teeth pulling away the pin seemed exaggerated, like a loud clanking of machinery.

"Say hello to holy light, bitch..." he muttered with his teeth still clenched around the pin. As soon as he pulled it out, he let it cook for a full second before throwing it in the room. As soon as the canister was out of his hand, Roland quickly withdrew himself back to the wall, hoping that the brightest thing he would see was something akin to a camera flash...

The intruder eclipsed some of the light from the front entrance, and Dan could see his long shadow sliding closer along the hall. He held his breath, ready to strike out with the stun gun when the moment was right.

'...what'd he say?'

And then a small metal canister rolled to a stop by his feet. Dan's eyes widened, and his pupils diminished to the size of poppy seeds. In less lethal circumstances, he would certainly have tipped his hat to the intruder for playing such a devestating checkmate, but in the split second of realization only one word escaped his lips. Half-a-word, actually.

"Sh--"

BANG! would not have summed up the ear-shattering sound that followed. It was like nothing he'd ever heard before; like he'd been punched in the brain through each ear. Accompanying this awesome roar was a brilliant flash of light that momentarily blinded him...or rather...momentarily froze his vision, like a freeze-frame. However there was no explosion. No shrapnel. Dan couldn't be bothered wondering why he hadn't been blown to bits, because right now the question on his mind was, 'why's the fuckin' room spinning?'

Roland's eyes jolted almost wide open enough for them to bug out in the immediate split second after the holy canister exploded, before reflexively contracting to a glaring squint. The resulting bang was definitely brighter than a photo flash from his angle, but it wasn't enough to blind him for too long. The sound on the other hand left his ears ringing and very nearly deaf. Not that he'd need sound to take on such a big target as "Damien" at such close range.

That and not being in the immediate presence of the flashbang allowed his sight to clear up faster than Dan's did. In the time it took him to regain enough bearings to attack, Roland got charged up with fear that Dan would recover faster than he did, and that was plenty enough to get him accelerating with the sceptre.

"HWAAAAAAAAAAAGH!" came Roland's rather masculine battle cry as he charged into the room.

Lucky for him, the sceptre was angled just enough that it would easily fit in the doorway. Unluckily for Roland, as he finally turned to get a clear view of "Damien," he found that his latest adversary was quite a bit bigger than he thought. And in that moment, he actually recoiled a bit, realizing that this time his inner demon was in a male form. It was hesitation that could be harmful to Roland's health.

Dan blinked frantically to get his vision to return, dreading the moment when the intruder would take full advantage of his sudden handicap. He was beginning to suspect that the canister had been a flashbang grenade, given the immense flash and bang, but he still had no idea how long the blindness would persist. And on top of that his balance had been completely shot; it was similar to being inebriated.

A furious cry rang out directly in front of him. He would have to just go without vision or balance for the moment, seeing as he was under attack. Dan threw himself forward and ducked low, aiming to spear his opponent around the waist and drive him up against the closed door across the hall.

Roland's hesitation wasn't exactly fatal...but it was very damaging.

By the time he figured out what he wanted to do, "Damien" was already charging him. Now, it was easy to evade such a big target moving like that...but Roland didn't quite have enough time to get completely out of the way. Dan charged into his side, sending Roland spinning to the ground and the scepter out of his grasp.

As Roland tried to get up, he suddenly felt like he'd actually lost a limb without his scepter. And losing Jesus was a lot like losing a very critical limb. "Damien" appeared to still be blinded, but it didn't look to be longer until the creature would attack with full power, causing Roland to scramble for his scepter. His bag was still open, and some of his own supplies - including the two remaining flashbangs - spilled out as he crawled back for his scepter.

That wasn't bad, Dan thought, for being temporarily blind and unbalanced. He'd clipped him at least. One shoulder having made contact, he stopped himself with the palm of his other hand against the opposite wall. He blinked again. His vision was returning, but he still felt dizzy.

He turned towards the other boy, who had been knocked down (he figured; there had been an audible thump) and was now fumbling for his weapon. His bag had spilled on the floor, and two more canisters tumbled out. Dan pushed himself away from the wall with one hand, the taser held firmly in the other, to sieze the opportunity to completely disarm his opponent for good.

Dan took one step towards him and raised his foot over the other boys arm, just short of the staff he was reaching for. Gritting his teeth and applying more than enough effort to simply pin the arm in place, he brought it back down swiftly.

The staff was not beyond his reach. Jesus was not beyond his hopes. All Roland had to do was make the effort. His scepter was now very close, and he was crawling fast enough to reach it in a few seconds.

Unfortunately for Roland, a few seconds was a few seconds too long, as he painfully realized when he lunged for the scepter, arm outstretched. Dan brought down his leg to pin it to the ground, and Roland could have sworn he heard something cracking with the velocity at which he'd done so. Of course, he probably would have only heard that cracking for a split-second (no pun intended) above his own nerve-wracking cry of pain. It was but a minor reflection of the pain that he currently felt throughout his entire body now, and not just a single region.

This was definitely worse than the currently-purely-cosmetic injuries to his face and neck. If his arm had definitely been broken, then he could not wield the scepter with full strength. And if he could not fight this Damien with full strength, then he could kiss eternal salvation goodbye. Eternal salvation was not something he would just simply bid farewell to, as a burst of pain would obviously give him a corresponding burst of raging determination as it did when he fought Damien's previous form

The question then was...would he gain that determination before Damien sought to capitalize on his own opportunity? Roland certainly hoped to God that was so...knowing that a flashbang had rolled into a shadow nearby that was within his other arm's reach...

Dan was satisfied with the wet snapping sound that emitted from the Gilroy student's arm as he drove his heel against it, and even more so by the cry of pain that immediately followed. The tables had turned, hadn't they? Maybe it hadn't been such a good idea to fuck with Dan "Biggie" Johnson. And just how many upstart forwards had he tought this lesson to...

"Come on, up!" he grunted, releasing his weight from the likely broken arm and tugging his downed opponent by the back of his collar to raise him to his feet (he did this with three fingers of the hand holding the stun gun; it crackled just short of the boys neck as he illustrated that he wasn't fucking around). The dizzying effect of the flashbang was wearing off, and he only became the slightest bit disoriented as he rose with him. He then opened his free hand and reached for the other boy's throat, attempting to force him against the wall. Whatever happened next would be his own damn fault.

Roland Kelly didn't have time to do much else before Dan picked him up. With all his strength, he flung out his un-injured arm for the nearest possible object to his hand, which just happened to be lying in the shadows. He just had enough time to grab it tight before "Damien" picked him up by his collar, which was easy to do. His injured arm swung underneath, and it felt as if his hand would tear from separate from it, accompanied by another scream of pain.

"Damien" had him at his mercy, or lack thereof. Roland could hear a few electric shocks crackling behind him, dangerously close to his collar. Even though the electricity was just far enough away that it wouldn't affect him much...it was still enough for him to feel like wherever it was sourced from was pressed against Kristey's slash.

As soon as he was properly-nearly upright, Roland could feel his left hand twitching helplessly as he was lifted up, his arm dangling painfully limp. Judging from the look of things, he'd been injured below the elbow, meaning that most of the pain was concentrated in it. He wanted to clench his left hand, but even the slightest movement just stoked the fires of pain. That didn't stop him from reflexively clenching his right hand tight around...

...a canister!?

A couple of fingers squirmed up, luckily locating the trigger pin. They barely had enough time to secure themselves inside a ready position before Dan's other hand clasped around his neck, reflexively causing Roland's grip to loosen...and take the pin and spoon with it. It quivered in his hand for what seemed an eternity before rolling off onto the floor between him and Dan.

Roland was not expecting a miracle here. At least not one he couldn't work himself.

Lord...have...mercy...

Glancing down, Dan saw the second flashbang held tightly in the other boys hand. Oh no. Suddenly it was like everything was moving in slow motion. He held his breath and looked back and forth between the boys eyes and the small metal canister. The boys fingers curled up and through the pin. Dan could feel one of his eyelids flinch involuntarily.

Don't do it...

...don't...

"You asshole!" he just managed to hiss indignantly before being drowned out entirely by the deafening roar. Now at least he'd looked away, but once again he felt the near sonicboom fuck up his eardrums.

The dizzying effect was much worse this time, like it had been stacked on top of the previous one. Dan felt his grip release on the boys throat, his fingers twitching violently as he clawed at his scalp and knocked his baseball cap off. Staggering backwards, it was all that he could do to desperately keep hold of the stun gun.
