Puella Magi Mafia Fallout Thread

Hey y'all I absolutely am not gonna keep up the Kyubey thing for the fallout thread lmao. Here's some info and notes and shit for you:
Inactivity bummed me out. There were a couple of day phases where the game looked like it might die entirely, and there were definitely more dropouts than I would have liked. Y'all rallied toward the end, though, once things came down to the wire, and it got interesting again. I ended up being less harsh about inactivity and only inactive-killing people who literally weren't participating at all anymore because the alternative was cutting down most of the town and I super didn't want the game to be decided by inactivity.
The Serial Killer winning is a super unusual outcome, and I think a few unlucky factors for the town and mafia ended up skewing it in his favor:
For the town, obviously inactivity favors scum. Roles were rolled randomly, and the loudest town voices also ended up being important power roles, leading to them being taken out relatively early, before they had much useful information. Additionally, the SK and the Mafia targeting different people every single night very effectively and quickly decimated the town.
For the Mafia, the biggest advantage they hold over the SK is their numbers; you can't really say it was bad luck so much as mistakes in play that got Poly and Deamon lynched, but Zetsu being nightkilled left the Mafia at once member who was actually significantly weaker than the SK at that point.
I worry that I kinda overplanned all the moves and countermoves with the setup, having everything have something else that directly counterbalances it; I personally think the setup was pretty well-balanced overall, and another game with the same setup could easily come up with a Town or Mafia victory. Totally open to setup critiques though, I haven't run a forum game of Mafia, like, ever?

Jailkeeper - roleblocks and protects target
Bodyguard - protects target but dies in their stead
Gunsmith - investigative role, learns if target has a gun (all mafia members + the vigilante have a gun, the serial killer does not)
Follower - investigative role, learns what action the target took at night, if any
Innocent Child - can choose to be confirmed as town at any time
Non-Consecutive Vigilante - can perform a kill at night but cannot do so two nights in a row
Vengeful Townie - can choose to kill someone else with them when lynched
Miller - comes up as Mafia to a cop investigation (a red herring, as there is no cop in the setup)

1x Bulletproof Serial Killer - 1x bulletproof, compulsive night kill, immune to Gunsmith investigations but not the Follower
For an 18-person game 4 mafia is fairly standard so I probably don't need to explain that particular choice.
Power roles for the town were chosen specifically such that none could be considered "all-powerful" and all had checks and balances on them. There were two protective roles to start with, the Bodyguard and the Jailkeeper, each are significantly weaker than a normal Doctor; the Bodyguard can only successfully protect once, and the Jailkeeper roleblocks who they protect. The idea was to neuter the Follow the Cop strategy by making it impossible to both protect an investigative role and have them continue getting results.
The investigative roles follow a similar path in that neither can catch all of the anti-town faction members on their own. The Gunsmith cannot catch the Serial Killer and gets a false positive on the Vigilante; the Follower can only catch the Mafia member currently doing the killing but can catch the Serial Killer and also confirm other roles.
The Vigilante adds a third night kill to the Mafia's and the Serial Killer's, but only on alternating nights. This was meant to improve the pace of the game without making it too quick, as well as to allow the town to get some offense in during night phases.
The Miller was a red herring, meant to cause the town (and the Mafia) to assume there was a Cop present when there was not.
The Innocent Child and Vengeful Townie are relatively weak town roles present to give small added advantages to the town, and the VTs round out the roster. Most SotF mafia games don't have many (or any) Vanilla Townies, but they're the easiest way to add numbers without unbalancing things.
As for the mafia, the Leader was given x1 Bulletproof to give them and only them some small measure of protection. Godfathers are not Normal-game legal, so no member of the Mafia has investigation immunity. The Strongman is a fairly standard mafia role. The Vanilla Cop was added partially for flavor reasons and partially to help the Mafia choose better nightkill targets, though they were prevented from finding the Serial Killer due to the Serial Killer technically being Vanilla.
Finally, the Serial Killer was given x1 Bulletproof due to the difficulty of winning as the Serial Killer generally. They also had immunity, by basis of the role description, from both the Gunsmith and Vanilla Cop's investigations, making them only directly vulnerable to the Follower's investigation or to plain old lynching.

Notes: Oh, this one was fun. Fun fact: before Zetsu swapped in for Rugga, Rugga had chosen to perform no action as Tart, meaning there would have been no kill on the first night. Had that happened, blast likely would have (correctly) concluded that Deamon was Mafia, since he roleblocked him, and blast may have gotten Deamon killed sooner. As it is, when Zetsu swapped into the spot, she chose to use her action, so we got a nightkill after all, even if it was an ill-advised one. Also interesting is that Paige chose to investigate boogie on the first night; because of the limits of Follower investigations they didn't get any result, as the Mafia Leader does not have a night action personally, leading Paige to erroneously believe that boogie was safe.

Here Toben investigated Dodd and again came up clean, as Gunsmiths generally cannot detect the Serial Killer. In retrospect I wish I had made that explicit in his role PM.

Additionally it was around this point that Zetsu was swapped a second time into Mimi's prior role as Mafia Goon; I believe it was also Toben who seemed to have suspicions about that, which were more or less accurate; Zetsu was swapped in because Mafia is put at a much more serious disadvantage losing a member to inactivity as compared to Town.

Notes: I chose to inactive-kill Prim for the same reason as Jilly. I waited a bit longer as I was hesitant to kill the last really useful town power role, but if it wasn't being used it was just as useless to town as anything else. Had boogie been lynched here there was a decent chance of Town pulling it out, but this was probably the last phase the town had a serious hope of winning the game.

Notes: Once again, two different targets. This lucky coordination between the Mafia and SK is the biggest reason the SK was able to win; the Town was efficiently whittled down.

Notes: Had boogie or Dodd been lynched here, after Night 7, there would have been one more dayphase at the final 3, where boogie or Dodd just needed to get the other townie lynched to win. Unfortunately there was never much suspicion aimed at either of them. The assumption that there wouldn't be so many VTs in one game proved fatal. There was a very small chance Town could still win if they lynched correctly here, but doing so incorrectly left it as a battle between the Mafia and the SK.

Notes: At this point Dodd winning was very likely, and Town winning was completely impossible. boogie's only routes for victory were 1. if he and Dodd targetted the same town member, or 2. if he targetted Dodd and Dodd targetted a town member. In either case there would be 3 remaining, going on to a Day 8 where Dodd would win if boogie or the final townie were lynched, and boogie would win if Dodd was lynched. So a pretty hard sell, either way. As it is, since they targeted different town members, Dodd won.

Final 2: dmboogie (Oriko Mikuni, Mafia Leader) vs Cactus (Sasa Yuuki, Serial Killer)
Mafia automatically kills the opposition when >= half remaining are Mafia; Serial Killer automatically kills the final other person remaining in a final 2 situation
Both kill the other and both die. As the Serial Killer wins when all are killed, Cactus wins.
Notes: The SK is commonly given the win condition of "you win if all are killed, even if you aren't alive yourself" because winning as the SK is generally considered super difficult as it is. I've basically never seen it happen. So this ending was pretty cool, in my opinion.
Inactivity bummed me out. There were a couple of day phases where the game looked like it might die entirely, and there were definitely more dropouts than I would have liked. Y'all rallied toward the end, though, once things came down to the wire, and it got interesting again. I ended up being less harsh about inactivity and only inactive-killing people who literally weren't participating at all anymore because the alternative was cutting down most of the town and I super didn't want the game to be decided by inactivity.
The Serial Killer winning is a super unusual outcome, and I think a few unlucky factors for the town and mafia ended up skewing it in his favor:
For the town, obviously inactivity favors scum. Roles were rolled randomly, and the loudest town voices also ended up being important power roles, leading to them being taken out relatively early, before they had much useful information. Additionally, the SK and the Mafia targeting different people every single night very effectively and quickly decimated the town.
For the Mafia, the biggest advantage they hold over the SK is their numbers; you can't really say it was bad luck so much as mistakes in play that got Poly and Deamon lynched, but Zetsu being nightkilled left the Mafia at once member who was actually significantly weaker than the SK at that point.
I worry that I kinda overplanned all the moves and countermoves with the setup, having everything have something else that directly counterbalances it; I personally think the setup was pretty well-balanced overall, and another game with the same setup could easily come up with a Town or Mafia victory. Totally open to setup critiques though, I haven't run a forum game of Mafia, like, ever?
