Song Contest #48: The Sadtest

The lonely chiming of a piano
The mournful wail of a violin
Bagpipes hurling a dirge over the valley
Oh yeah. It's sad song time.
Song Contest #48: The Sadtest
Give me your heart-wrenching, tear-jerking, most sorrowful songs. Maybe it's obvious why it's sad, maybe it's just a personal reason, like it's a song your grandmother would sing to you and you think of her. Whatever the reason, it belongs here, in this pit of sadness.
This is one of those song contests where you can submit your song with a little reason why you submitted it, just in case you need to pile on some extra reason why it might be sad. This is by no means mandatory, it's just an option and it will be included with your submission.
- [+] Rules which I just ripped from Paige like they ripped from Fen and so on and so forth
-
- submit your song via PM or discord, whichever's easier for you
- songs will be randomly divided into 2 or 3 semifinals depending on turnout. if you're going to be away at some point in the next couple of weeks, let me know and I can try to put your song in a round when you'll be here.
- listen to every song and give points to your top 10 favorites: 12 to your favorite, 10 to your second, 8 to your third, 7 to your fourth, and so on down to 1 point for your tenth favorite.
- if your song is in a given round, you must vote that round or you'll be eliminated. if your song isn't in that round (or you aren't in the contest at all), your vote will be counted as a public vote, which counts for half points.
- the top [x] songs will move on to the final. that number depends on the number of contestants.
- repeat the process for the finals and we get a winner.
- winner gets to hold the next contest, or they can pass the job along to 2nd place if they don't want to. 2nd place can pass down to third, etc, until someone wants to host.
general song rules:
- no eurovision songs
- no reality show/competition covers
- no songs already submitted in a songtest
- there is no penalty for length in this contest. however, if a song goes over 15 minutes, listeners aren't obligated to listen to more than the first 69 minutes of the song. so choose a long song at your own risk!
each semifinal and the final will last for three days. some rules about activity/extensions:
- if you know at the start of your semifinal that you wont be available to vote for those three days, let me know asap and I can move you to another semi, if we aren't on the final one already.
- I'll (maybe) be posting every 24 hours in this topic as a reminder, as well as pinging everyone who hasn't voted on discord 24 hours before the round ends.
- extensions will only be granted in extenuating circumstances. forgetting to vote until an hour before deadline is not an extenuating circumstance. And just to be honest I probably won't grant them because you had three days come on.
I'll be taking submissions for songs for roughly three days, so the cutoff is
December 11th, 9:00 PM PST (12:00 AM December 12th EST).

Let Round 1 of the sadness commence
Participants in no particular order
dmboogie
Fenris
Murderweasel
Brackie
Jilly
Ruggahissy
Kermit
Laurels
Blizzard
Zarina
Pippin
And their songs, also in no particular order:
1. In the Woods Somewhere - Hozier
2. Ghost - Nelward
3. Movies - Weyes Blood
4. Everybody's Changing - Keane
"I listened to this a lot when I was in secondary school, and for ages didn't realise why it affected me so badly. Turns out, when you also have severe feelings of uncertainty with who you are, where you're going, and feeling like you're falling behind and being forgotten by everyone around you, you kinda resonate with it!"
5. Winter Solstice - mewithoutyou
“does my misery feed a metaphysical need that’s long since passed me by, neither reasoning why nor offering reply?”
6. Shiver - Lucy Rose
7. Casimir Pulaski Day - Sufjan Stevens
8. Meltdown - Liz Robinett/Iroha
9. The Kids From Yesterday - My Chemical Romance
10. The Enigma - Eric Bogle
"This song (aside from featuring the mournful violin wails mentioned in the opening post) digs into the tragedy of suicide from a very human perspective. It paints a portrait of the denial and guilt and disbelief among the survivors and the way the lack of closure can eat away at them. It offers no answers, only observation, and it's particularly crushing for its unflinching yet sensitive examination of a topic that touches so many lives."
11. Lazarus - David Bowie
How very sad it is that of these 11 songs, only 8 may be allowed to make it to the finals. Help me decide which ones should go. This tragic bout of voting will proceed for roughly three days, until
11:00 PM PST, December 14th 2019
