Welcome to the 53rd SOTF Song Contest!

Image

This song contest is expressly for travelling songs. Basically this means anything that fits a walk, drive, flight, train trip, drunken stumble, epic journey, a vacation, whatever. As long as it's going somewhere from point A to point B.

The only caveat is that when you submit a song, you must specify the type of travel. It can be vague or specific.

So you could submit

[Song] - "Driving"

or

[Song] - "Driving Back Home Right After A Breakup at 3:00AM"

or

[Song] - "Driving Away From The Only Home You've Ever Known Understanding Full Well That You're Never Coming Back And Despite How Much That Tears You Up Inside, You Know It's The Best Thing For You To Do Right Now Because, Like, The Only Constant In Life Is Change And If You Don't Know Anything Else You Know That You Need A Change, I Mean Maybe You Need To Get A Little Bit Lost To Find Yourself, Or Maybe That's Just Vaguely Affirmative Bullshit But God-Damnit You're Leaving And That's That."

Whatever you want. If it doesn't work, I'll let you know.
[+] General Songtest Rules
No reality show/competition covers or Eurovision songs. Weird holdover rule but I copy/paste these every time, from others who did the same. By now it's just a tradition.

Please don't use anything we've used in a prior songtest (Master Songtest Sheet here).

There's no need to relentlessly slag songs in chat. This is for fun and we all have different tastes, which is part of the experience of participating in these.

Songs will be randomly divided into 2 or 3 semifinals depending on turnout. if you're going to be away at some point in the next couple of weeks, let me know and I can try to put your song in a round when you'll be here.

Listen to every song and give points to your top 10 favorites: 12 to your favorite, 10 to your second, 8 to your third, 7 to your fourth, and so on down to 1 point for your tenth favorite.

If your song is in a given round, you must vote that round or you'll be eliminated. if your song isn't in that round (or you aren't in the contest at all), your vote will be counted as a public vote, which counts for half points.

If you're doing a public vote in chat, tag me in Discord with @Shiola so that I can find them or send them to me like regular votes. If you don't do this, I can't guarantee I'll find them.

Public votes will all count as half-votes.

The top songs will move on to the final; the number of top songs depends on the number of contestants. Repeat the process for the finals and we get a winner.

The winner gets to hold the next contest, or they can pass the job along to 2nd place if they don't want to. 2nd place can pass down to third, etc, until someone wants to host.

Each semifinal and the final will last for three days.

If the semifinals are too large, I may split them into three. I tend to prefer even numbers for them.

If you know at the start of your semifinal that you wont be available to vote for those four days, let me know and I can move you to another semifinal, if we aren't on the final one already.
Contest will begin two days from now, signups will be open until then. You can send songs to me either by board PM or through Discord.

A Playlist Meticulously Planned Around The Exact Amount of Time It Will Take To Get There:

Tina Turner - Proud Mary
"Sailing away from all your troubles."

The Proclaimers - I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)
"Walking 500 miles just to fall down at your door, obviously."

Vanessa Carlton - A Thousand Miles
"Making my way downtown."

Texhnolyze (Hajime Mizoguchi ft. Yoko Ishida) - Walking Through the Empty Age
"It's more of a metaphorical traveling song about moving on with one's life, but the lyrics have a lot of imagery that's on theme."

David Bowie - Space Oddity
"Space Travel."

The Naked and Famous - Girls Like You
"Travelling back home after a hectic all-night party in your late teens/early 20s where you've had some revelations - about life, about people you know, about just how vast the rest of your life will be as long as you're not tying yourself down into the same routine that has led the world to where it is today; it all wants to make you just want to stare out the window of this vehicle in silence watching the world go by, thinking about everything you can do, but all this newfound inspiration to change your life will probably be gone the moment you get home."

Separate Ways - Freetime
"Flying to see your S/O and fixating on the trip back away from them instead of the time together in between."

Laurie Anderson - From The Air
"Airplane."

Rush - YYZ
"Flying back home after being abroad for a long time. Neil Peart and Geddy Lee both said that when YYZ, the code for Toronto Pearson International, appeared on their luggage tags it was a happy day."

Masaki Matsubara - Silly Crush
"Cruising down a city highway at night going nowhere in particular, but feeling things about stuff nonetheless."

Natalia Kills - Wonderland
"Wandering through a seemingly-utopian fairy-tale-kingdom-esque hidden world in the woods, where wonderous sights and clues that things are not what they seem pop up over the course of the tour."

Murder By Death - Until Morale Improves, The Beatings Will Continue
"Walking the long, long desert road to go fight the devil."

Please send in your top songs in the following format:

12- Song Name
10- ...
8- ...
7- ...
6- ...
5- ...
4- ...
3- ...
2- ...
1- ...

With 12 being your favorite song, 10 being your second favorite, and so on. The top 10 songs will continue into the finals. Public votes count for half.

Votes by board PM or Discord are both perfectly acceptable. If you're in this round and you do not vote, you will be disqualified.

Remember to tag me in Discord for public votes, or post them in this thread.

Quick note - I originally linked the acoustic version of Until Morale Improves, The Beatings Will continue as that was the link sent to me before the round went up. This has since been amended to the studio version of that song at the contestant's request.
