This was more like it. Hector should've started here to begin with. Perfect combination of rough wilderness and recognizable landmarks, for one who knew what to look for.

He hid his bounty here in two pieces, hundreds of feet apart. This time, there was no need for artificial markings. Hector looked at a boulder that resembled an old man's nose sticking up from the ground. From the point of the nose, it was easy to see a small, snow-covered field of rocks. Not too far into the field, under a rock like any other, that was where some other night's dinner lurked.

The other was not in a hollow tree, but near it. Hollow trees tended to be home to animals, and despite keeping his eyes open, Hector hadn't yet found any certainty about what sort of apex predators they'd be dealing with. He didn't want to stick his hand into a hole and find a bobcat, and he didn't want any critters eating his food, though he wouldn't begrudge them the way he had the last one who'd attempted to help herself to generosity he didn't posses.

His pack was getting lighter now. Not quite done, though. Not yet.
