((Trinity Ashmore continued from What Do We Do Now?))

Maybe Trinity was paranoid, but she had a damn good reason for it. She couldn’t trust anyone in a dangerous situations but herself.

Scratch that, start over.

Trinity couldn’t trust anyone in any situation but herself. Sure, people mean well. Her moms always meant well, but when it came down to it, too many people lacked the common sense, drive, and responsibility to be truly dependable. People are unpredictable even in the best circumstances, and even your closest allies can turn on you when the stakes are high, and they were never higher than they were here. People are driven by all sorts of twisted desires and hidden agendas.

Trinity had been burned before, burned over and over, and wasn’t about to let it happen again.

Norbert hadn’t followed her, and that was for the best. Since she had woken up, Trinity seemed to have a talent for setting bridges ablaze in her wake. Either he had been working with that boy who had tried to kill her, was thinking of taking advantage of the situation or…. or was innocent but couldn’t trust her after her accusations. Just like Fitz, Cedar, and Tenshi, all of whom but the first were dead if she was to believe the announcements. But if she was to believe the announcements, the boy who attacked her was named Chester, and he was dead too. She killed him, killed him so good the terrorists awarded her a pizza that was waiting for her in the belly of the underground tunnels.

"You know what they say about things that are too good to be true," she whispered to herself through chattering teeth.

The people who abducted them were bastards and liars. She didn’t believe them before now, and she refused to deviate from her theory to consider otherwise. Even if there was a pizza, she would be insane to go when everyone knew she’d be going there. It would be the perfect opportunity for an ambush.

So Trinity stayed the course. She stayed alone. That was the plan.

Days passed in icy solitude. Trinity’s plan held steady, but she was bitter and alone. She hated to admit it, but she wished she had someone to talk to. She wished she had Norbert or Lúcio or Fitz or even Taylor with their stupid offering of a Monster energy drink. She stood among the towering pines with a heart heavy with regret.

The biting wind cut through her as she clutched the sasumata in her gloved hands. Her fear, anger, frustration boiled inside of her and threatened to bubble over. With a fierce yell of frustration, she raised the weapon high and slammed it into the nearest tree. Her whacks against the bark echoed like thunder. When she stopped, she heard a distant rumble and a sound almost like a crack. A moment passed, then slowly, the ground beneath her trembled. Trinity’s heart pounded as the snow-covered slope above her gave way. Panic and regret washed over her as she realized the act of venting her anger sealed her fate. The last thing she saw was the sheet of blinding white before she was buried.

Trinity died quickly in the mountain’s embrace as the final embers of her anger were snuffed in the cold.
