huh what

Private

Behind the church, surrounded by a wrought iron fence and under the shadow of the mountain, sits the graveyard. Each resting place marked with either a worn tombstone or simple wooden cross. Always covered with a layer of snow and ice, the ground in the graveyard is cracked and split, the result of the same seismic activity that is also affecting the church. This has created a foreboding scene: in certain places, the coffins of the dead residents can be seen where graves have opened due to the disturbance. There are also open graves that present a fall hazard for someone traversing the area. At the back of the graveyard is a small wooden shed which once contained the grave keeper's tools, though it now stands empty and only offers meager shelter from the elements.

[[John stepped in from a bit of a walk.]]

And they heard a noise, so they went to investigate. Sticking to trees, and whatever cover there was, they moved low and slow. A gunshot - it was definitely a gunshot.

John knew this kind of curiosity killed cats - heh, get it, their favorite animal - but at this point, they wanted to know. Who was out here killing people?! Who was out here continuing this terrible game. A thought flashed in their head - eventually, someone will try to kill them. That'll mean-and then they put the thought deep away, back in their head.

No, there has to be another way.

Okay, how big was this cemetery again?

[[Enter Jezzie Stark, gun still in her hands, but expression showing frustration, as well as a bit of confusion.]]

Was it always this big, or did being stuck in a hole scramble her brain enough to get directionally challenged? Is that even a thing that could happen? Maybe she should've just gone through the church or something, it would've been easier. But what if someone was in there and wanted her dead? Had she really heard a scream earlier, or had she imagined it, bored out of her mind with nothing to do? She'd turned off the tracker before it happened, not wanting to kill the battery, and once it did happen, she didn't exactly want to bring attention to herself if it was real. Who's to say the screamer wouldn't see her as an easy target and shoot her then and there? Whatever the case it was a risk, and she didn't need to take too many of those at once, really, she had enough on her plate as it was.

Too much on her plate, really.

The other person in the graveyard went unnoticed by her as much as the snow crunching under Jezzie's heels.

John continued walking, against their own warnings, deeper into the graveyard. Towards the source of the noise. They felt like there needed to be a hero in this place. Not a hero, no. John just wanted to help. That's all they ever wanted to do. And if they needed to hurt someone to protect someone else? That's exactly what they'd do.

And they walked with a mission, shovel ready, deeper into the graveyard.

Man, they probably look like a grave robber right about now.

"I didn't even go that far, how did-"

Crunch crunch went the snow.

"I should've just gone into the church, like anyone would fucking-"

Clack. Clack. The gun occasionally tapping the tracker in her jacket pocket, ignored because she turned it off again.

"Ugh, can I just have one day where things don't go wrong-"

Ting, ting.

John playfully tapped one of the gravestones with their shovel. Not really thinking about being particularly quiet. I mean, it's a big graveyard. The chances of someone hearing must've been close to zero.

They looked around, and maybe saw the glimpse of someone. They walked towards them, with maybe a bit of a fast-er stride than normal walking speed. A sense of urgency. To see if they're okay.

For a moment, she could only freeze.

Why was is always when SHE WASN'T FUCKING LOOKING AT THE GOD DAMN TRACKER-

For a few agonizing moments, all she could do was slowly turn her head.

There was no acting effort put into Jezzie's tone as she meekly called out one word.

"H-hello?"

"Oh, what's up? You need help? I heard shots - we should probably leave!"

John picked up their pace. A thought that maybe this was the shooter crossed their mind, and needed to get closer to see if this was the shooter. They gripped the shovel a bit tighter.

"So, what's your name?"

She really hoped she had just been hearing things. Spooky graveyard making her paranoid.

Then a voice.

Adrenaline came with it.

They probably saw the other girl die.

She already knew she wasn't the hero, but this just cemented it in her mind even more.

When the same answer met the same question Jezzie had gotten in the last ten minutes.

Again.

And again.

And a few more times for good measure.

Fucking adrenaline.

The answer ripped through them with it's searing hotness. What?

Then another answer ripped through them. It rebutted every thought John had in their head.

John turned, trying to find cover, but more pieces of lead hit their back. They fell to their knees, and hands.

They put a hand to their stomach, and felt warm liquid pour all over it. They tried to scream, but only a gurgle came out. Every sound was made with a gurgle. A steady stream of blood, racing down their body, gave them warmth. But even then...why did it feel so cold?

John tried to keep moving, but it felt like every movement made them dizzier. And eventually, no matter what, everything felt dizzy.

Until John...grayed out completely.

They did not pass away safely into the night. But they definitely have everything they need for a funeral. Just need someone to dig.

[JOHN KIERAN JR., HAS DIED.]

And just like that, she had six kills to her name.

Once more, silence fell onto the cemetery.

Until she broke it.

"I...I didn't-I just..."

A breath was sucked in through Jezzie's teeth.

Then, it turned to a snarl.

"Oh, FUCK THIS!"

Without another word - or anything the microphones could pick up or find intelligible - she grabbed the dead person's bag and took off running, finally finding an exit.

Taking out Evie better be that easy.

[[Exit Jezzie Stark, another bag thrown over her shoulder, another weapon to be added to her armory.]]
