Homecoming? More like Lone-coming

Welcome to all; here's the loser's corner.

John Endecott Memorial Academy's homecoming itself, held within the school gym, on November 5th, 2021. The theme is Roaring Twenties. The Terriers lost the homecoming basketball game to their cross town rivals 69-71 the previous Wednesday. This forum can cover anything from the arrival at the dance to when students leave. There are plenty of chaperones around to keep an eye on things and unsupervised areas are off-limits, so no private threads are allowed at the event.

Homecoming? More like Lone-coming

About fifteen minutes in, Erika arrived with a camera, a backpack, and and her mother's borrowed dress. She tried to escape homecoming, actually. Several times. Her dad had all but pleaded for her to go, convined that school-organized events like these are the 'backbone' of the high school experience. She was quite sure he was just still not over the fact that he never played football and now wishes to live vicariously through his daughter, in the hopes that she may have enough friends that it would make him feel indirectly better about himself.

Which didn't work, of course, because Erika seemed to have inherited his overall laughably pathetic high school experience.

She wasn't actually sure what homecoming even is, actually. She was quite sure it was supposed to be for graduated students...? Something something football games?

Either way, it sure wasn't sit-in-the-corner or play-on-the-phone or wait-to-get-picked-up. It was nearly shameful to do something so blatantly antisocial in public view, but she was sure there were at least five people more noticable than her.

And if anybody tries to talk to her, she'd probably just get up and flee.

((Alex Avanesian — Homecoming Start))

This was kinda boring, to be honest. Alex hadn't expected much from this, because dances weren't really his thing. But his dad had forced him to go, because it was like, some quintessential high school experience to go to an overpriced themed dance and pretend that you enjoyed it. He could be looking at SOTF deaths or something more interesting, but if he got caught he'd look like even more of a weird psychopath. It was stupid how just being skeptical of the facts was seen as being on the same level as some anti-vax idiot. So he was forced to talk to Mabel, who didn't get why he was so insistent about the pattern. They had stuck to it for 16 or so years, the ATs had no real reason to break from that pattern.

He hadn't even bothered to get dressed in something from the 20s. His Canon hoodie was like, still a 20s thing if you meant the 2020s instead of the 1920s. What was so great to celebrate about then? There was like, a big economic depression and then the whole Hitler thing. The 'aesthetic' was probably closer to like, people lining up for food banks rather than like, the Great Gatsby. At least he'd managed to miss the basketball game, which they'd lost for like, the thirteenth time in a row. Alex didn't get why people went. It was like, the, uh, the AT's pattern. They took people every three years around May-July. The Bulldogs lost their basketball games every year.

Putting his phone down, Alex groaned, staring up at the ceiling. "This is boring." He grumbled to nobody in particular. Sometimes you just, like, had to vent.

She pretended nothing was happening mostly because she spaced off for like fifty seconds.

"I'm sorry," she said over the music, "what?"

Oh, uh, someone else was here. Amerika or Erika, he couldn't really remember. There was an Erika in it. They never talked but her dad was like, another conspiracy guy except he was the 'chemtrails are turning the youth transgender' kind of conspiracy dude instead of the SOTF conspiracy kind of dude. Alex didn't really get like, those kinds of conspiracies. It was just some schizo dude in his basement who saw a completely unrelated set of numbers, added them all together and decided the result was proof of some conspiracy, or that weird Q guy who a couple of the people on Discord kept talking about. SOTF conspiracies, like, made a lot more sense because there was actual evidence and stuff.

It wasn't like, bulletproof stuff, but it was a lot more inteligble than some dude deciding all the numbers on the $20 dollar bill add up to Satan or something.

"Uh, this place is boring. The, uh, the-the dance stuff." Alex clarified, glancing over at Erika. She was on her phone too, so he wasn't like, the only antisocial dude here. Or person, because, uh, Erika wasn't a dude.

[Evie McKown was helping set up, now she's avoiding the actual event]

There were times when Evie wasn't sure if hanging out in the corner with the socially-awkward and/or dateless was where she belonged. When she'd walked in for the first time, for instance: sure her outfit was essentially a glorified cosplay of Jordan Baker as she'd appeared in Baz Luhrman's interpretation of The Great Gatsby, but the stylish dress and interesting hairstyle still looked striking. She liked to think she actually looked good, in fact, and for a few fleeting minutes dared to imagine she might suddenly not be incredibly unsuited to the Homecoming dance.

Didn't take long for her to remember that she had very few real friends despite her laundry list of positive acquaintances, that she wasn't exactly considered attractive or interesting, and perhaps the most obvious evidence of all, she soon caught herself thinking how she'd rather be at home trying out the latest patch of her favourite Hearts of Iron IV mod. Yeah. Evie belonged with the weirdos in the weirdo corner. Maybe someone there would want to talk about Miletiy Zykov? Or more likely, she'd keep her nerd power level to herself and stick to the normal range of small-talk. That said, as she hovered from the food towards the fringes of the room, Evie spotted a face she imagined might actually enjoy hearing about the weirdest minor personalities of history, if only to speculate on how they fit into the grand narrative leading up to... whatever it was he believed was really going on behind that dreadful SOTF atrocity.

"You too, huh?"

She didn't really know the other girl there, but Alex Avanesian was... Evie wouldn't call him a friend, so to speak, but they got along well enough when their paths crossed. They both had weird interests, but Evie certainly enjoyed hearing Alex's wild conspiracy ideas even if she didn't believe much of what he had to say. She treated it like an exercise in alt-history, much like her weird interest of choice, and enjoyed it in much the same way as counterfactual fiction. So she gave him a wave with her drink-free hand and approached, already considering going for her own phone to see if she'd missed anything interesting online, where she was actually reasonably good at socialising.
