The Fool was her

Private!

The garages are very simplistic and built solely for the purpose of holding the station's fleet of vehicles. They feature two roll-up sheet metal doors, one rolled up enough for some to crouch under it and the other closed, along with a side door that has been frozen shut. Inside sit three vehicles: one all-terrain jeep that lacks a full set of tires and two snowmobiles.

Eden was still bummed out about not having her tarot cards on hand as they were pretty much a comfort thing for her. Now she understood how Ellis felt without his buddy. But still, they already made plans to move onward to other places to explore and maybe they could find some things to help out. Maybe a way to escape from the nightmare that they were in? Maybe a way to take off the collars without their heads being blown off? She felt a bit more hopeful about finding someone who would know how to deal with that.

((Eden Glass continued from Iron Lotus))

"Oh, boy. Oh, boy. Gosh, I really don't want to go back outside. It was kinda cosy in here." Eden said honestly as she did a stretch and let out a small yawn. She wasn't really much of a sleeper, but it was better than nothing. She needed a bit of energy after all. "Ahhh, oh, well. Let's see if we can brave through it out there. Shall we, boys?"

Eden gave a small nod to the other three and she moved over to pick up her naginata. It was pretty much her companion after all. She couldn't part without it. Not unless someone took it out of her dead, cold hands. But she couldn't let something like that happen, not unless she really messed up.

She ducked down to get out of the garage and she took in the cold air. She was almost tempted to go back inside. Almost!

((Ellis Wheaton continued from Iron Lotus))

Ellis tried to get his limbs back into working order. He had jumped out of one of the cars and was trying to stretch and bend his limbs any way he thought he could. Sleeping upright in a car wasn't ideal, but it was some time to actually sleep after having spent nearly two days awake. It wasn't the most comfortable rest nor did it come with the most pleasant dreams. Mostly they involved a rehash of him running around the island and various specters threatening him. It was a good thing he had forgotten most of it when he was awoken by the announcements.

He listened as more names were read out. Marian had apparently frozen to death. Ellis was upset to hear that someone he had met recently died. He wasn't too sad; she wasn't a friend and their encounter wasn't the most pleasant. But now he felt bad for all the nasty things he said and thought about her. He couldn't take those back, and he'd have to live with that.

Just another thing for him to feel shame about in the short time left on earth.

He had exited the car and began stretching shortly after the announcements ended. Eden was also out and about, having grabbed her weapon and stepped outside.

"Hey, don't go far," Ellis said to her.

Seeing Eden take stock of her weapon preempted him to do the same. He reached into his coat pocket and found the dagger Marian had given him for that shitty toy he got.

"Oh..."

Now he felt sad again.

((continued from the garages 24 hours-ish prior))

Timothy didn't get much sleep last night. He never had real issues falling asleep upright or in cars, in fact it was his favorite activity on long rides, but he just didn't sleep. He had that half-awake feeling you got when you know you at least dozed off a little bit and remember dreaming, but he couldn't remember if it was truly dreams or just hallucinations.

He remembered one of them being about Kiera, but that was it. He didn't understand why he couldn't stop thinking about her.

Somehow, he slept through the first part of the announcements. He made a note to ask one of the others for the hot goss from the first part, but a part of him didn't care to either. More names, more corpses. Just another day that ends in -y. And the cycle continues, because no one cares to change anything.

Through his groggy eyes, Timothy watched Eden get up and out all bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. Even if this wasn't a murder game, Timothy was never a morning person. In a perfect world, he'd never get up before noon every day.

He rubbed his eyes with the back of his hand and got up, cringing at how much his back ached. He tried to stretch it out, but it honestly didn't make him feel much better.

He glanced over at Teddie, more calm than yesterday (to Timothy's surprise), but Tim still didn't trust him to not go on a stabbing spree. But hey, he made it a whole day at least so that was something, though Timothy was still gonna run for the hills should some new developments develop.

With a head shake, Timothy started walking towards the entrance of the garages, grabbing his bag set down by the car and joined the other two outside.

"What's the plan? Where's the fire?"

(Teddie/ Jack waking back up from Iron Lotus )

Teddi-Jack had been awake for a bit now. While he was the first to sleep he was also the first to wake. It was hard to sleep on the island, being constantly plagued with the thought "what if someone finds me while I sleep and decides to take me out?" or "What if my allies are just waiting for me to fall asleep so they can kill me easier?" They just kept running through his mind, so when he woke up sometime early in the morning, he decided to stay awake. He stared at the slightly open shutter as morning began to rise. Then Eden got up, a part of him wanted to greet her but he decided against it, instead, he pretended to be asleep while his grip tighten on his weapon.

Others got up as the announcement went off. Teddie wanted to cry, but Jack was in control and instead just looked at shadows in the garage where the noise came from. People froze to death, Kitty killed someone else, and the list of dead increased while the living decreased. Jack got out of the car, grabbed his bag, and took a few slices of bread from the loaf he was given. "The plan is breakfast." He answered Timothy's question in a voice that sounded both deadpan and extremely tired, as he nibbled on bread. "We can't do much if we are hungry." Jack joined the rest of his friends.

Kitty's third. Sounded impressive, but Ash had to wonder state she was in after that much in the way of killing. The first must've been a thrill, maybe the second, but the novelty had to wear off by now.

Hm. Maybe murder was the best way to keep the cold from settling into the skin. Ash must've been doing it wrong with the layering.

- Ashlyn -

Two days- who was counting, they were all going to be a similar flavor of dreadful and indistinguishable- and change, two sets of announcements from their corporate sponsors, and Ash was back in the place she'd sworn she'd be avoiding. Too many people would hunt through the halls of the research labs for warmth, be it their own or stolen from the fresh meat of their prey. Well, that was the two of them now. Juanita and Ash, killers at large, minus the blood on their hands.

At some point all those pep talks from Perez and Becker must have put some sage pearl of wisdom in their brains for what to do when it came to killing fellow peers. Something about the competitive spirit and playing fair, or something like that. Probably not the most helpful.

Few voices from up ahead. Ash didn't glance Juanita's way. They'd talked this over, they had a proper game plan now.

The go word lingered in her mind, precious as diamond.

Ash peered around a corner- ducked her head back as quick. They were close, right around the bend, a group of four assembling in front of some barely open garage doors that must've been their shelter for the night. She recognized three of the four faces- only unfamiliar with the short boy, skinniest one, they were all short- and she'd snapshot the faces. One of the neat little things she'd been able to do since birth, remember people before they could remember her. There was the commie kid #8712. Eden, who she liked, but not in that way. Not any more anyways. And Teddie. Less said about that particular dumbass the better.

She held up two fingers close to her cheek for Juanita to see. A sign as neutral as a thumbs up- they were okay, not in danger of being immediately attacked. Outnumbered, but there was an outside shot someone in the group would be receptive to switching sides to the quote-unquote 'winning' team. Quick retreat around this corner, if things went sour. It seemed like a much better set up than the one in the Sheriff's yesterday, especially since Ash hadn't said anything cursed to ruin it yet.

((Juanita Reid continued from The Holly and The Heavens))

Hiking up to the research station at the crack of dawn wouldn't have been high on Juanita's list of priorities under most circumstances. She'd popped a few pre-emptive aspirin, which hadn't done much except to blunt the worst of the pain. But the closer they'd gotten to the place, gotten to see the scale of it, the more her heart started to race, the more the pain started to ebb away.

This place was huge, and it looked like there were hundreds of places to hide. Even with Ash's device, which let them move without fear of an ambush, it was still unnerving to think how many of their classmates might have died up here.

The announcements came and went as they approached what looked like a garage of some kind, flanged by four collar signals on the screen. Juanita only half paid attention to what the terrorists were saying - she didn't know a lot of the names. Ash's sister had scored another kill, which seemed like something they'd probably need to talk about at some point, and Juanita thought she might have recognized Joshua James, assuming he was Josh from Christian club. She could've been wrong on that, though? She'd never really picked up on Josh's last name. And if what the other announcement had said about Mal had been true, well... it looked like Juanita wasn't the only one who'd decided to test the Thou-Shalt-Not-ness of the fifth commandment.

She waited patiently while Ash scoped out the garage, taking a few deep breaths to psych herself up. This is it. Game time. Who's the best? We're the best. Go get 'em, champ!

When Ash gave the two-finger signal, Juanita nodded in response, then pointed at herself and jerked her head to the left. I'll take the left, you take the right. They'd let the conversation flow as it needed to, and only engage if someone dropped the go word for attack ("eggs"), or, if things went really, irredeemably bad, the flight word ("blast") which meant drop everything and run, now, forget the other person, and don't stop until you get back to the church.

Her heart was racing now, really raring to go. Too fast. Had to calm down a bit. All right. She took two more breaths, slower now. Calming. Getting the voice right. She called out around the corner, "Uh... h-hey, is somebody out there? We come in peace! Don't shoot, okay?"

Eden was actually pretty hungry herself. But Timothy seemed like he was asking for more than what Jack was offering. She needed to think about a better plan. She had been looking over the map before she had gone to sleep for about an hour or so. Her insomnia had been kicking in severely. But it wasn't that much of a bother to her.

She clapped the side of her leg with her free hand and then she turned her attention. "Well, I was thinking about a radio and-"

She stopped speaking when a voice suddenly called out to the group and she furrowed her eyebrows a little. A look of puzzlement was present on her face. That was definitely a girl's voice. Normally Eden would be friendly and open to inviting whomever it was to join them. However, they were in a life or death game, so she couldn't be nicey-nice all the time to people. She had to try to be not too reckless and impulsive with her motor mouth.

She glanced at the others in the group, feeling a bit wary-ish. "What should we do?" She whispered quietly. "Should we turn her away or...?"

Ellis joined the other outside the garage as they began to talk about what to do next. Jack suggested they deal with breakfast. Ellis nodded to that. He was definitely feeling hungry considering they were only given scant amount of bread and energy bars instead of actual damn food. Eden was about to suggest something else when there was an interruption.

A girl was calling out for them. Ellis froze when he heard the voice. He wasn't sure who it was. All he knew was there were a lot of girls who were repeat killers so far.

"Do you know who it is?" Ellis whispered to Eden. "If it's one of the killers, we better scram."

"If it was a killer I doubt they'd just announce their arrival like that," Timothy whispered immediately after Ellis. "...Though they said 'we', so..."

The likelihood of murderers working together was probably somewhat nil, considering in the end there could be only one. it would be a stupid thing to team up just to cannibalize each other at the end. But also maybe Timothy was overestimating the collective intelligence of his classmates.

"Say 'hi' I guess? Iunno." He shrugged his shoulders.

Ted-Jack was looking at the snow-covered ground when a familiar voice spoke. Now Teddie would welcome the newcomers with open arms.

In this game that was an easy way to get killed. "Who said we came in peace?! It would be best if you guys would leave!" right as Jack finished he looked up at Juanita. And froze. His action's stopped, his thoughts stopped, and he heard the dull extremely quiet noise of his unfinished bread landing in the snow.

Now Jack shouldn't know her. But Teddie does. Teddie's mouth opened then closed a couple of times as he watched like a deer in headlights.

"Easy, easy."

So far so good on the whole 'don't shoot' deal. Ash emerged as well, hands up in a gentle surrender, her radar stowed in bag after she confirmed nobody was close enough to make the scene messier than it already had the potential to be. She'd been told by friends and Salem before that placatory gestures weren't really her strong suit, but well. Ash was comfortable- enough- to rely on Juanita to carry the whole diplomatic-slash-sympathetic vibe.

Nobody had pulled a gun. These guys were trusting or they weren't armed. Worked either way.

"Eden. Teddie. Hope you've been doing well."

She crossed her arms as she reached Juanita's side. Didn't really help her look badass but it warded off the cold a bit. She didn't have Kitty's murder spree to keep the blood pumping so, had to settle for the old fashioned way.

Furtively, with the most innocent of glances, she scoped out the possible threats the other group of four posed above and beyond the obvious fact of numerical superiority. Not much bulk to go around. Generally wimpy and lame looks to the guys- Eden was a different story but she was missing about thirty pounds worth of relevance.

She kept the go word center in her frontal lobe.

"Yo, Peg. Peg. Peggggg."

"What?"

"You all right? You keep zoning out."

"Just thinking, that's all."

"Yeah? About your date last night?"

"Shut up. We're not going out anymore."

"You got dumped by Teddie Boyd?! That's a new low."

"It was a mutual decision,
actually. And it was super awkward. I don't wanna talk about it."

"Sure, 'mutual.' What happened? He found out about your zombie leg and wasn't into necrophilia?"

"Shut UP."

"I actually thought you and him would make a good couple. Symmetrical."

"Symmetrical?"

"You know, you've got one leg, and he's got one-"

"Gross! Don't say it. I'm trying to eat over here. How did you even hear about that?"

"Heard it from a friend who heard it from a friend who thought he heard it at the restaurant. Oh my god. I can't believe it's true."

"Yeah, fine. It's true. Whatever. Look, I don't want to talk about this anymore."

"Did he show you?"

"NO! Shut up!"

"Hey, c'mon! Don't leave! C'mon, Peg! You don't have to get mad about it. It's funny!"

=-=-=-=-=

Juanita continued to hold up the haladie, keeping it loose, the knife equivalent of a holstered gun. Not an immediate threat, but still there.

Things had gone off the rails almost immediately, as soon as she came around the corner and saw exactly who they were dealing with. All the planning and rehearsing went out the window, just like that.

Juanita had purposely tried to go through high school as unobtrusively as possible. She didn't talk much, didn't put herself out there, focused on lacrosse. She tried to be a person people would think of positively. It didn't always work; there were girls who saw her as a bit snobby, secular kids who saw her as a bit too religious, boys who saw her as full of herself, exes who saw her as a prude. But there was one person in school who'd see her as something worse than that. One person who'd see her, unequivocally, as an enemy. One person she'd damaged beyond all repair, however unintentionally.

Based on his face, he was just as shocked to see her as she was to see him. She swallowed, hard. He'd already told them to get lost, even before he'd spotted her. They were already on the back foot, playing defense.

"Look, we're... We're not scavengers, or anything. We're looking for people to join up with. We have a group back at the church, and we're planning to work together and survive this. Win fights through teamwork. It's easier with bigger numbers and all that, you know?"

Eden noticed that Ash was with a girl called Juanita. She didn't know Juanita that well, but she definitely knew Ash a bit more. She didn't really hang out with her as she was pretty much neutral on her in general. She felt awkward when she had to reject Ash's feelings about two years ago. But she had wanted to remain friendly with her.

"Hey, Ash. Doing as good as I can be. Hope things haven't been that terrible for you or... Juanita."

She had noticed Teddie's reaction to seeing Juanita and it seemed that things had spiralled out of control between them in the past. She knew that it had ended in something bad. But she had to keep things calm for everyone.

"Well, we're not really looking to fight people and I really don't think it would be a good idea to join a bigger group." She said to the two girls and then she glanced at Teddie, reaching out to touch his shoulder gently for comfort. "Also, I don't think we want members that have issues with each other to be together."

She was just being honest. She hoped that her words didn't come out too harshly.

Ellis waited as the others in his group addressed the newcomers. It was actually two girls who were approaching them. Ellis didn't know Juanita that well, but he remembered Ashlyn as one of the many mean girls from middle school. He tried not to make eye contact with her. Last thing he needed to deal with in a life or death game was someone who was going to mock him for being a loser.

The two girls were apparently looking to join a group. Eden said that they weren't in the mood for a large group. Ellis simply nodded quietly.

He didn't think he could talk with the girls to get them to leave peacefully. Perhaps Eden or one of the guys would be better at negotiating.

"Yeah, not interested. Sorry. Too many cooks." Timothy kept his arms crossed. In truth, he didn't care, but if Eden and Ellis (and he guessed Teddie too) didn't want to go, well, it was above his pay grade. Though there was some truth to how a committee ruins things, anyway.

Regardless, he was just gonna let them handle it.
