wow hey i was gonna make a "its been a while" joke but it objectively hasn't been so i'd just sound silly

THE 74RD SOTF SONGTEST AKA:
YIKES!

oh boy im gonna have to explain this one. ok here are some normal rules first tho

[+] da rulez

- submit your song via PM or discord, whichever's easier for you

- songs will be randomly divided into 2 or 3 semifinals depending on turnout. if you're going to be away at some point in the next couple of weeks, let me know and I can try to put your song in a round when you'll be here.

- listen to every song and give points to your top 10 favorites: 12 to your favorite, 10 to your second, 8 to your third, 7 to your fourth, and so on down to 1 point for your tenth favorite.

- if your song is in a given round, you must vote that round or you'll be eliminated. if your song isn't in that round (or you aren't in the contest at all), your vote will be counted as a public vote, which counts for half points.

- the top [x] songs will move on to the final. that number depends on the number of contestants.

- repeat the process for the finals and we get a winner.

- winner gets to hold the next contest, or they can pass the job along to 2nd place if they don't want to. 2nd place can pass down to third, etc, until someone wants to host.

general song rules:
- no eurovision songs
- no reality show/competition covers
- no songs already submitted in a songtest
- there is no penalty for length in this contest. however, if a song goes over 7 minutes, listeners aren't obligated to listen to more than the first 7 minutes of the song. so choose a long song at your own risk!

each semifinal and the final will last for three days. some rules about activity/extensions:
- if you know at the start of your semifinal that you wont be available to vote for those three days, let me know asap and I can move you to another semi, if we aren't on the final one already.
- I'll be posting every 24 hours in this topic as a reminder, as well as pinging everyone who hasn't voted on discord 24 hours before the round ends.
- extensions will only be granted in extenuating circumstances. forgetting to vote until an hour before deadline is not an extenuating circumstance.

ok now. let me. explain.

i could explain this theme as guilty pleasures, but heavy on the guilt. specifically, this contest is for songs that genuinely make you feel guilty for liking them. not like, haha this song is so bad am i right you guys but i really like it tho lol. like, oh god i really shouldn't like this. i think i should go to jail. i don't want to support this but it slaps oh no what do i do

okay let me break that down a little better. probably this will fall into two basic categories but if you can convince me something else qualifies feel free to submit it and, uh, convince me.

songs where the artist (or someone else linked to the song) is a bad person who you don't want to support: is someone involved with this song a confirmed sex pest? was the artist jailed on assault charges? are you just really into the musical career of charles manson?? if you really dig a song but you're like "wow this person is awful i do not want to support their musical career monetarily. but also this song is really good. shit" it qualifies for this songtest!

songs with sketchy, unpleasant subject matter: i don't just mean like, songs about death or whatever here. i mean songs where the subject matter genuinely makes you uncomfortable and makes you question the artist in, uh, question, but you still dig the song. if you really dig a song but you're like "oh fuck i just looked up the lyrics and oh god what if the artist actually believes this, oh no, but i still really like the song. shit" it qualifies for this songtest!

i know this is kinda a complicated theme. i get it. here's the short version: if it's a song you dig but it also makes you go yikes and/or you'd probably be canceled on tumblr for admitting to liking it: it probably counts. go with that.

The very formation of this group, in of itself, was basically a father vicariously living through his children and then robbing them of everything until they could get away.

Reason: This was on a compilation of comedy music I had as a kid and enjoyed, thoroughly unaware that he was singing an Australian racial slur and not the word "emus" pronounced weirdly. Then a couple years later the singer ended up in the news for serious sexual misconduct.

Fire Planet (Mayhem Remix) - Jackal Queenston
Reason: nazi dog (also the artist behind jackal queenston and mayhem (yes they're the same person, yes this is an artist remixing their own track) was accused of both physical and sexual assault over the course of a longterm relationship)

Reason: alec holowka was abusive to a lot of people and an absolute nightmare to work with in general

Dollhouse - Melanie Martinez
Reason: Timothy Heller has accused Melanie Martinez of sexual assault by way of pressuring her into a traumatizing sexual relationship. Martinez maintains that she always obtained consent and accepts no responsibility for any coercion. It has been rumored a number of songs on her follow up album are meant to cast Heller as a liar and a traitor to their friendship attempting to capitalize on Martinez's fame.

China Girl - David Bowie
Reason: he does the thing that racist people do where he pulls his eyelids to the side at 1:10, and when he performed it live he'd put a fake Chinese accent on for the lyric "Oh baby, just you shut your mouth." also mentions feeling like Marlon Brando because of that movie he was in where he dates a Japanese woman
