Madeleine nodded, darting forwards to grab the map, messily fold it, and crumple it into her pocket anyway. "Yeah, hopefully they don't show up."
It was at that point that Cassie opened the door.
She glanced between Connie and Madeline. Reading the room was never really one of her strong points, but even she could sense that there was something off.
"Um..." she gulped, eyes flicking between the two girls. "Th-there aren't any... Tents... Well there are, but they're all kinda... Soggy..." she mumbled, holding back the desire to apologise profusely for her mere existence.
"S-soooo, where are we going then?"

Connie didn't block Madeleine from retrieving her map. Actually, she didn't move at all, which was just enough to make Madeleine's objective ever-so-slightly awkward. Only after the map was stowed did Connie turn and flash her a little smile.
The return of Cassie was marked with a languorous shrug. "I'm going to the research station. If you want to come along I won't stop you."

Connie's smile was like a Cheshire cat's smile, Madeleine decided. It was too wide, too cheery, too disconcerting for someone who'd supposedly seen her friend lying dead with their neck broken. Everything about Connie was disconcerting, enough so that she couldn't muster any sadness or fear about the situation at whole - everything was focused on her.
"I'm, uh, I think I'm gonna go to the residential place, the town." Madeleine gabbed, brain working after her mouth, trying to put as much future distance between her and Connie as possible. She was grateful for Cassie's return, though. If Connie decided enough was enough and wanted to murder her, it helped to have a numerical advantage.

Oh. So Connie and Madeline were planning to go to opposite ends of the island. She didn't know what words were said between them whilst she was away, but perhaps it was for the best that they went their separate ways. She didn't want to see what would happen if unspoken tensions were left to simmer.
That did however leave her with a decision to make...
"Um..." Cassie mumbled when Madeline asked where she was planning to go, gripping her ski boot tightly as she looked down at the floorboards. Home...
"I, uh, I want to go..." Home.
"I... I'm gonna go, um..." HOME!
"I-I'll... I'll come with you, if that's okay?" she finally replies, looking up at Madeline. Truth be told, it wasn't really that hard a decision to come to. Curious as she was as to why Connie wanted to go to the research station that badly, she'd already built up a lot of trust with Madeline, trust she didn't want to just throw away because of her own reservations about the town. There was no guarantee after all that the next person she bumped into would offer her the same kindness.
She didn't need to do much to pack up, having already prepared herself to leave if need be. As such she'd just wait for Madeline to get whatever she needed together, looking over to Connie as she continued to fumble with her ski boot. "I, um, wish you all the best with... Surviving, and... Stuff..." she said quietly, not really one for drawn out goodbyes. She briefly wondered if she'd ever see Connie alive again.
Once Madeline was ready, she followed her outside, stopping briefly in the snow laden path to take one last lingering look at the lake. She could still picture herself out there, skating along the ice. Not a care in the world.
She sighed softly, bid the lake farewell, and followed along behind Madeline.

Connie was doing it on purpose now, Madeleine had no doubt. Even if she didn't kill anyone - although Madeleine was certain she had, she'd bet on it - she was honestly just creepy. Madeleine was glad to get back into the freezing cold, because even with the snow crunching underfoot and the brisk wind, it was still warmer than the frosty atmosphere of the cabin.
She didn't say anything to Connie. But as she and Cassie walked to wherever their next destination was, Madeleine found herself checking behind her shoulder in case there was a smiling girl stalking them.
