new liver, same eagles

An interlude; morning of day 4

Thick with trees and snow, the tundra forest is relatively unspoiled, and some of the deeper areas have been completely untouched by man. The forest itself is made up of western red cedar, sitka spruce, and western hemlock, which have all been able to grow to large heights thanks to a lack of logging, providing areas of shelter. Some animals can also be found roaming the forest such as mountain goats, sitka black-tailed deer, and bald eagles. A dried-up riverbed can also be seen within the forest which, if followed, leads to the lower mountain path one way and the frozen lake the other way.

Salem glanced over his shoulder and aimed a cheery wave at Kai’s back. Then he leveled the gun at the target he’d put on the snowman’s face, hands clasped steadily together even with the slightest shiver from the cold.

He pulled the trigger and watched the top of the snowman’s head explode in a puff of white. If Kai had anything to say to that, he couldn’t hear it over his ears ringing.
"Art enriches the community, Steve, no less than a pulsing fire hose, or a fireman beating down a blazing door. So what if we're drawing a nude man? So what if all we ever draw is a nude man, or the same nude man over and over in all sorts of provocative positions? Context, not content! Process, not subject! Don't be so gauche, Steve, it's beneath you."

Kai didn’t run from the sound, but he picked up the pace.

Salem had been aiming for the center of the bullseye, but he’d hit a few inches higher. As the ringing of the shot slowly faded, he became aware of the ache in his wrists and arms from the gun’s recoil. It took a couple minutes for him to make himself unlock his elbows and drop his hands, belatedly remembering to switch the safety back on.

The first time pulling the trigger was going to be the hardest. That was what he was going to tell himself for now, so that it could be one obstacle overcome and crossed off the list.

He hadn’t really loosened his grip on the gun until he was pretty sure that Kai wasn’t going to take it.

((Salem Fox continued in it takes a lot to make a stew))
