Guilt

Day 4, Night; Open

The research lab is one of the largest buildings in the research station complex. It contains multiple rows of tables for experiments to be conducted on and different cupboards that contain a large variety of equipment and tools, though as with the rest of the island anything resembling weaponry has been removed. There is also a fume hood pushed up against one of the walls of the room and a set of incubators.

Who the heck is Maya?

What is happening?

She felt a little left out of the loop, but this was the perpetual state she was in for, like, the entirety of her life so it's fine, it didn't even sting. Still.

Amy felt the sudden need to take a nap. She could probably just sleep on the cold, hard floor right now. Full eight hours, good dreams, no interruptions if none of the other kids got up to any funny business. She hoped mom and dad were sleeping well, too, and she knew that they were not, because they would be so panicked, like, it would kind of be impossible for her to sleep well if her hypothetical child was kidnapped, but just for the sake of it she tried to manifest a good rest for them.

Anyways, what was she thinking about again? Right, Maya. She turned to Prii. "Do you, um, know her?"

Prii nodded, and were surprised by the sudden sense of relief that they felt. They and Maya had never been the best of friends in debate club, but the familiarity was something to reach for and embrace. Hopefully Maya's confrontational streak wouldn't manifest itself here, and hey, that was three from debate, plus Amy. All folks that Prii felt that they could extend trust towards. Well. Amy was unconditional at this stage, so the other two.

"We're all in the same club," Prii explained to Amy, and then raised their voice a little. "Prii here, too, and Amy."

A smile managed to crack through their concern. What a breath of fresh air. "Hopefully this'll be safe for now, and then we can search more tomorrow, alright? I'm not so tired, you can go catch some sleep."

Prii figured they could settle in for tonight, and then... hope for the best, hope that tomorrow, they'd be able to reuinite, and perhaps even return here.

Felt pretty good to them.

List of relatively edgy superpowers

1. The Bug- born as a baby with caterpillar-ish features, including but not limited to: multiple pairs of stubby limbs, the ability to climb/cling on to vertical surfaces, excretion or production of toxins, a silk gland, and/or colorful skin, as well as vastly inhuman anatomy. Once the character hits puberty, they are compelled to undergo metamorphosis, eventually getting into a cocoon and staying there for a significant amount of time, enough to disorient them when they eventually exit as someone with butterfly features. The level of distress, amnesia, and death-of-personality that follows the transformation tend to get to them sometimes- did they kill their former caterpillar self? How do they catch up after months, if not years, of being stuck in a chrysalis? Does their body feel weird, even when other people praise it for its beauty, for its wings?

2. The Gruesome. Brutal self-detonation/explosion without permanent harm, with ragged bone matter as shrapnel (explosion does not cause flames, smoke, or any of the sort- think of a balloon popping instead) before quickly pulling all the shards back and reforming around a shard of matter. long refractory period. Theoretically powerful as a living shrapnel bomb, capable of defensive used as a last-ditch dodge method. It’s significantly less cool of a power to have in daily life. The user smells distinctively of blood most of the time. Where the body breaks apart is dictated by prominent lines running through their skin- they are sensitive and run inches deep, seemingly to the bone if one presses deep inside- the disfigurement is as mentally distressing as it is physically painful.

3. The Patient: Constant sense of their own bodily functions- arguably a very selective form of biological omniscience. Instantly able to diagnose illness, injuries, and exhaustion, among other things. If they focus, they could probably sense their own gut bacteria and the state of digestion, the amount of calcium in their bones, the T-cells and macrophages fighting against viruses, the blood cells flowing through their veins, the unconscious spasms of tired muscles, the filtering of toxins through their kidneys, the neurons firing between the synapses of the brain, and medication kicking in to work… it’s overwhelming and overstimulating and but infinitely useful to keep themselves at the healthiest they could possibly be.

...

Amy tried to come up with number four, but she fell asleep before it was finalized.

"Thanks," Maya said, mostly on autopilot when she came in. She saw some people she recognized. Good. At least, she thought it was good. She didn't know anymore.

When the two of them left for bed, she was left alone with Karen. She took out her hands from her pocket. Dried blood was still on them. She took a few steps towards someplace to sit before putting her bag down. She didn't really need to drink, but the adrenaline from before was starting to wear off.

She should be asking questions, at least, she thought she should. She instead opened a bottle and chugged it down. Something she had to force herself to do whilst remembering the fresh sight of a dead body. Her movements were still rigid, like she was still in a dream.

When Maya came in, Karen noticed that she looked a bit... off. She looked like she had seen something shocking. Something that had to do with the blood on her hands.

...

There was blood on her hands!

"Maya," was all Karen could say. She was about to ask Maya about the blood, but reconsidered. Maybe Maya was still shaken by what happened.

"Perhaps, you could tell in the morning," she said, "For now, we should get some rest."

"...Huh?" Maya looked confused for a moment, before realizing that her hands were still... bloody.

Did they suspect she was a killer? Was she in danger? Did she just make a huge mistake? Maya couldn't help but hitch her breath, her tense chest unable to breathe as she looked for a potential way out from all of this stress piling up on her. She didn't want to be killed, especially not when she's hyper-alert like this.

But then, Karen said she'd let her rest... did she mean that, was it a test? Maya was overthinking a lot of things, but to her, she was simply assessing the situation as best as she can.
