Southwest Red Rock High School, generally referred to as Red Rock by its student body and staff, is a well-funded modern facility. Originally built as part of a new initiative within Nevada to provide state of the art, secure education facility. Southwest Red Rock spent the first few years of its existence as an average academic school without any identity while its sports facilities approached completion. Once these were completed, however, the school exploded in popularity. This was due to a deliberate and motivated pivot by both the school and the Las Vegas Mayor to position it as the crown jewel of the new initiative, especially as it pertained to sports, with the state-of-the-art facilities bringing in many interested students. The Red Rock Rattlers formally began competing the same year and following initially middle of the pack performances, every subsequent year has seen a top-fifteen finish in the state. The funding and sponsorships these performances have generated were the smartly reinvested into other areas of the school, being used on things such as computer labs with Mac computers, a renovated auditorium, dedicated performance space, and an expanded library. The layout of the school takes advantage of the consistency of the weather in Las Vegas and has no hallways. Instead, each faculty has its own classroom buildings, and the gym and auditorium are separated. The campus includes a lot of outdoor space for sports, such as football pitches, a baseball diamond, basketball and tennis courts, and a swimming pool, among other facilities.
This cycle of consistent upgrading and improvement has also been approached in a sustainable manner with the school focusing on one project at a time and never overreaching with its goals and ambitions. Academically, the school can be considered average to above average at best, although the rate at which students graduate hovers around 93% which sees it above the state average by seven percentage points.
The Southwest Red Rock Rattlers sports teams cover a full range of sports. One of the main attractions for prospective athletes is that Southwest Red Rock High School has a team for each major college sport, and focuses on getting the students college ready. The team's colours are red and black, and the school's mascot is Ronnie the Rattlesnake, an anthropomorphic rattlesnake
