The Good Old Days

Open Thread 08/09/21

Here is where all threads set in the past belong. This is the place to post your characters' memories, good or bad, major or insignificant. Handlers may have one active memory thread at the same time as their normal active present-day thread. Memory one-shots are always acceptable.

Thorndike's law. Welcome to the Skinner box, Thomas.

Stella's expression remained tactfully unreadable.

"Now, we will be starting with the attendance." Mr. Owens stated. He flipped to a checklist on his desk.

She stopped chewing her gum. Switched her gaze to the front of the room.

"Ibrahim al-Amin," Owens said.

"Yo," Ibrahim al-Amin said.

"Lionel Anderson -"

Stella reached under her desk, unzipped her backpack, pulled out a binder. Put it on her desk. Opened it up, fresh and meaningless.

"-ia Bolanos."

"Bolaños," Alicia Bolaños corrected him.

"Bolaños." Owens sai-

There was this trick for remembering people, which Stella'd, like, figured out. Key was to create associations primarily between the name and the vibe. The face stabilized the connection between the two.

Mr. Owens, snivelly, passive-aggressive, might own a tweed jacket.

Evan Crabtree, bad acne, bad dandruff, talks quiet to make his voice sound deeper than it really is, Christ what a disaster.

Robert Kang, wearing only colors you can buy a dealership Civic in, probably says "sus" too often.

Svetlana Miller, weird name, gaudy hair dye.

Like that.

"Ingrid Mueller," Owens said.

"Here," Ingrid said.

"Stella Nyquist."

She raised her hand. Lowered it.

"I have a niece named Stella," Owens said, looking back down at the attendance list.

She smiled, mouth shut. Nodded her head silently. Didn't sigh or roll her eyes.

((Rest of the class went by uneventfully on her part.))

Michael Froese - he's not a good person brent

THREADS!

PREGAME: Mad world - This...this felt nice. - Michael was incredibly disappointed in himself for actually agreeing to go do something with Beryl. - He wasn't actually all that sorry. - Part of him was worried his real motivation wasn't self-torturing altruism but instead the fact that it was one of the few things that still made him feel.

ISLAND:
Michael and all of his friends were going to be footnotes in a history textbook. - he was folding in on himself like a four-dimensional object in three-dimensional space - Everything was about pain, fear, and love. - "Gave them our reactions, our explosions, all that was ours; For graphs of passion, and charts of stars." - He had a duty to look into someone's eyes as he killed them. - Closure really did sound like nothing at all. - "I wish we were lovers, but it's for the best." - Michael Froese the award-winning murderer. That was who he was now. - "I wanted to lose myself." - "Good and bad, all roads lead to Rome and I just, it hurts too much to be a good person." - "Somewhere out there in the deep blue sea, there's this whale." - "...It's harder to be yourself than it is to be anybody else." - "The neighbors, they adored him for his humor and his conversation. Look underneath the house there, find the few living things, rotting fast in their sleep; oh, the dead," - He gave her a big hug. He buried his head in her shoulder, feeling her cold, spongy, rubbery skin against his forehead. She had no eyes. She had no face. Something had eaten her face. - Michael Froese was a crazy person with a gun. - Validation. - "You don't live in a goddamned movie." - "I miss what it's like to be, like, actually alone." - "Market data inconsistent. Cantor API problem. Trading system offline," - Michael didn't want this. It wasn't like that'd stop him. - "I'm wide awake, it's morning." - He was a spree killer now, he supposed. - When he gave his word, he was giving nothing. - The fact they even existed was being politicized. - "BERYL FUCKING MAHELONA. TELL ME WHAT YOU DID TO BERYL MAHELONA," - 'Am I gray?' - A beach covered in unidentified decedents. - He'd never felt anything unconditionally. - "Look around you, you're surrounded.
It won't get any better. And so, goodnight."

PREGAME: August 12th, 2017 - The explosive sound of metal hitting metal

ISLAND:
She turned away. Everything from here on out was for the terrorists to see. - "All of us, we have the chance to actually do something with our lives." - The students were the shark in the box. - Complacency was festering like a tumour. - "She's right. It won't - it won't change anything," - Scraped into the wall, in neatly-styled lettering, the words "If they won't live in peace, then they'll die for peace." - Val needed a gun, - "I do not care for violence without a point," she stated. "My gun is not loaded." - "Juliette, I'm sure you already know this, but you really should take pains to be careful around people who speak only in enthymemes." - "Someone once said, 'Change must come with the barrel of a gun', and they were not wrong." - Two explosions.

From this perspective, from this position

On this occasion, there are a couple of things that we know that we pulled from Fact Magazine
One, character morality discourse is annoying and I don't care about it
Two, your time will come, but this is gonna be our version
So you should give us all of your roll nulls
Three, I wrote a goth and you did not, so shut up, because you don't know shit about goths that you didn't get from me

So times have been tough
And times have been tough
We have been staffkilled, unrolled, and rolled out
But honestly
And let's be honest with ourselves
How much time did we waste?
How much time did we all blow every day?

And so it's @Staff
@Staff, @Staff, @Staff, @Staff
@Staff, @Staff, @Staff, @Staff
Oh, @Staff
@Staff, @Staff, @Staff, @Staff
@Staff, @Staff, @Staff, @Staff

There's advantages to both
(Advantages to both!)

With my name in purple
And your name in blue
There's advantages to each

From this position
I feel an affinity for the both of them, which is confusing
But honestly
I should be careful because otherwise, I'm being, I'm being, you know, what's it called?

(OOC: Cicada gave me permission to jump ahead. Thank you.)

And so began the stream of names, which to Thomas were little more than a long string of gibberish that followed. As this happened, Thomas occupied the time with some thinking. How odd is it that people have names, which people primarily use to get their attention? Should a name have more to it?

"Thomas Shaw..." Mr. Owens proclaimed, getting Thomas' attention. Yet before Thomas could say here, or raise his hand, or some way to identify that he was Thomas, Mr. Owens continued.

"Yes I know you already..." He proceeded to type something on his computer and muttered loud enough for the class to hear.

"The talky one..." With disdain in his voice. Thomas suddenly heard a few of his fellow classmates strike up a quiet chuckle.

Thomas began to break a sweat, not for the laughter. Whenever laughter like this was cooked up, Thomas always said something along the lines of "A laugh makes people feel better, no matter what the cause is. I always feel better to make people feel better as long as I don't break any bones."

No, what made Thomas nervous was the annoyance in Mr. Owens voice when he said "The talky one." What if he thinks I'm a troublemaker... This was one of the main things Thomas dreaded with teachers. If Mr. Owens thinks that Thomas is a troublemaker, then already he's on his bad side. Oh well... Nothing to do right now.

Thomas sat up a little straighter and made a little cough.

Clarissa suddenly felt her eyes shrink a bit into her skull. Her desk- a full sized one instead of one of the tiny ones that made it more difficult to write with her dominant left hand- felt like it pinned her in place, shrinking to press right into her ribs.

That wasn't right, was it? Singling out poor Thomas like that. Hadn't other people been chatting? That one girl with the tomboy haircut had almost, like, been yelling.

Clarissa felt like she should have said something on Thomas' behalf. That was what friends did, right? But also. Good students didn't speak out against their teachers. And either way it wasn't Clarissa's place to speak. It never was. Whenever she spoke when not spoken to she said something stupid.

"Clarissa Shoemaker."

Clarissa half raised her hand into the air and said nothing. Nobody said anything, and they moved onto the next name.

All in an instant.

Eyes no longer on her, if they had ever been, Clarissa glanced sideways at Thomas. A half smile, friendly eyes. Hopefully it said 'I'm sorry he called you out like that'. She was pretty sure that action matched intent.

She focused on taking notes, listening about the syllabus, and trying to remember which face had which name.

After the few seconds of self-pity passed, Thomas sat up. Oh well, no use crying about it now. He felt a little better when he noticed Clarissa smiling at him, as it registered to Thomas that the two were now friends. All Thomas needed to do now was to convince his parents that he could get TicTok or Instagram, especially with his dad who he sometimes calls a "Technology Nazi" behind his back.

Oh well, that's for later, for now: Class.

((Thomas would spend the rest of class paying attention, which is more than what nearly half of the class could say.))
