((Chiara Masina: Pregame Start))
Chiara stared at the wall of foundation. She reached out, grabbed a few bottles that matched her skin tone, and tossed them into her basket. Her basket was already filled with a few makeup essentials, plus a new pallet from one of her favorite brands. It had been a while since she stocked up, having gone through a lot of the makeup she bought with birthday gift cards. She needed to replace what she had used up in her last few makeup videos.
Chiara slowly walked down the aisles of the makeup store. Her eyes drifted along the shelves, focusing on the models in some of the advertisements. She was hoping to find some materials to inspire a few new videos. The pallet was an important buy because that alone would make one video. But she was hoping for some more inspiration. Maybe she'd find a word to inspire a look. Maybe one of the celebrity models would influence a look.
Chiara brushed some hair behind her ear. She honed in on one ad that featured a model with some dramatic eyes. She tilted her head at the image, trying to see if she could decode the eye makeup just from looking at it. She then reached into her purse to pull out her phone. At the very least, she could take a picture to analyze later at home.

Iris liked makeup just fine, but she stuck to the same brands and palettes most of the time. When she went browsing, she usually ended up buying new things because they were packaged in pretty or creative way. They inevitably ended up under-used until she had to throw the makeup part out because it had sat around so long that it got crusty or caked up. Her bathroom counter had amassed a collection of jewel cases in various shapes and brands that served no purpose other than looking pretty. Still, she liked them.
Right now, she was dithering in front of a Sephora display, hemming and hawing over the Moschino palette they'd introduced as part of a "back to school" themed line. It was honestly delightful; the big eyeshadow palette was designed to look like a laptop, with the actual dimensions to match. The "screen" was a mirror, the "keys" various glittery shades of eyeshadow, and the space where a trackpad would have been on a real laptop was instead another eyeshadow in the shape of a cartoony bear's head, which she thought was the Moschino mascot.
It was adorable. It cost 120 dollars. Iris absolutely couldn't justify buying it on a whim.
But her dad wouldn't get too bothered if it was something she really wanted, right?
With an exaggerated hum of frustration, Iris turned away from the display and wandered down the aisle to see if anything else would catch her eye more.
And something did! "Oh- Chiara, hi!" Iris called out, pivoting on her heel as she almost walked past her classmate. She'd just seen Chiara out of the corner of her eye and took a minute to recognize her. They didn't talk much, but that was because Chiara didn't really talk to anyone. Iris followed her Instagram, and she never really talked on there either, so the silence was just a personality quirk. Chiara was really pretty, and her dedicated quiet alongside that always made her seem mysterious.
Changing course to go to Chiara's side instead of wandering aimlessly, Iris continued talking without waiting for a greeting in kind. "Are you finding anything good?"

“--and I’m just saying that a puffer jacket could work if it was cropped so that it emphasizes the right parts instead of turning us into giant marshmallows, right?” Molly said, waving her arms up and down to emphasize her point. “You just need form-fitting clothes for the rest?”
After shopping nearby for clothing, and leaving with a sunshine-yellow ruana that was currently wrapped around her neck, scarf-style, to contrast the blues of her Vault shirt, Molly’s need for new clothes had been briefly sated. But make-up was just as important. Maybe more, at least for the face?
So she’d agreed with Dani—totally not dragging her there, right? Like, she was following, right? So it wasn’t dragging? Anyway, they’d agreed to go looking for make-up. Molly suspected this might be easier of a place to get Dani to buy from. Easier to get fancy make-up in a mall than Dani’s level of designer and often custom-made clothing.
Molly waltzed into the make-up store, scanning the shelves, when she spotted two classmates further in. One of them she knew vaguely. Iris, friendly enough, not loads in common but, like, that’s fine? Not everyone was into video games or cheerleading? But Chiara was more notable. Not socially, she just kind of kept to herself, but she had all those make-up tutorials online, and Molly had utilized some of them in the past.
Molly came to a halt, casting an interested look at the two further along before turning to Dani.

“I suppose a puffer jacket with a particular cut could look very well. I’m not disputing that.” Dani sighed, rubbing the bridge of her nose as the two of them continued their discussion of the merits of wearing a puffer jacket that Molly still hadn’t let go. At this point, Dani had given up trying to dissuade her. “I’ve got form fitting clothes for days. I could probably get myself a jacket that exposes my midriff, then work with that.”
Dani was walking alongside Molly as they entered the makeup store, her heels practically announcing her entry as they clacked against the hard tile floor. She was happy to have found her shopping companion an article of clothing for her outfit that she enjoyed, but she had failed to find anything that suited her own rather… refined tastes, as it were. But the day wasn’t done, and Molly wanted to get some makeup that went well with her outfit. So hopefully she’d find something she’d like here.
Already looking around at the selection of makeup Dani spotted a few diffusion lines from the brands she frequently used. So already a good start and maybe she’d find something — anything — that she may like. But that was by far the least interesting thing of note in the store. What was more interesting was the two people already in the store. Iris White, a member on the volleyball team, same as her, and makeup Instagramer, Chiara Masina.
“Wanna go ask her for her expert opinion then, Molly?” she smiled cheekily. “I’m sure she’ll lend us a hand and let us know what would look good.”

That’s when she heard someone call out to her. She turned and saw Iris Waite there. Iris was someone she was vaguely familiar with, not that Chiara was familiar with anyone.
She simply nodded and smiled in reply to Iris’ question. She tilted her basket a bit towards the girl so she could see what Chiara had already grabbed.

Iris took the invitation when Chiara offered the basket to her and began to paw through it. "You have such pretty skin... is this how you get that glow all the time?" She asked, half thinking out loud as she examined the bottles of foundation. Chiara's whole complexion was what Iris would have described as honey-colored, between her skin and her hair. None of it was her own color, unfortunately, but she made a note of the brand to check out later.
"Are you looking for eyeshadow? There are some super cute palettes over there." Iris pointed back to the shelf she'd just been perusing. "Ooh, have you ever tried pastels? Light pink and yellow would look great on you."
Movement nearby caught her attention and Iris whipped her head up; she had to quickly follow the movement of her head with her hand to steady her glasses so that they didn't go flying off her face. "Dani!" Her voice rose half an octave into a near-squeal as she recognized her teammate. "And Molly, hi! Everyone's here today, how weird is that?"
Wait no, that wasn't weird. What she'd just said was weird. Why would it be weird for people to be at the mall? She was weird for saying it was weird. Dani had never called Iris weird and had always been nice to her, but you could never tell what Chiara was thinking. She had smiled at Iris, though. That was a good sign. Molly seemed like walking drama repellent, and Iris had always been sort of envious. She just Matrix-dodged everything that came at her, and some people seemed to think that was a problem, but Iris wished she could let stuff roll off her the way Molly always seemed to.

Well, probably? Molly certainly thought so, and both Dani and Iris were sociable and friendly enough. Chiara… well, that was a bit hazier? Like, Chiara just didn’t talk much? Molly didn’t really know if she was shy or if she was just vibing? But even a shy person had to want to talk after a pandemic, right?
Iris had noticed them and greeted them cheerfully. Molly waved, curling her other arm around Dani’s and pulling her forward rather needlessly, letting go quickly once they’d reached Iris and Chiara.
“Hi hi! And of course everyone’s out! We can, like, go places! It’s so good, it’s like pizza after a diet or whatever?” Molly idly curled a finger around a loose strand of hair, momentarily distracted—it had been foreverrrrr since she had pizza—but her attention snapped back quickly as she smiled widely. “I don’t do well with, like, blanket burritoing at home? Like a… sunflower?”
Molly shrugged, still beaming, and turned to Chiara before tucking her hands behind her back and leaning forward a little to look at the basket she was holding out for Iris.
“Thinking of doing a video, Chiara? Or is it just for you?” Molly asked curiously, eyeing the products inside.

Dani smiled and shrugged. More was indeed merrier, and having more people to talk to never hurt. Perhaps Iris and Chiara could help talk Molly out of her puffer jacket madness where she had failed to. Iris had noticed them, saying their names. Dani’s grin brightened as she looked over to her teammate. “Iris! So good to see you!” Molly’s arm curled around her arm and Dani curled her’s around Molly's in response as the two moved closer to the other two girls in the shop.
“I know I’m glad to be out and about!” Dani said, her posture relaxing once they were close. “I was going crazy being cooped up in my house! Only good thing that came out of it was the boost in followers on my Insta.”
Dani looked at the wall of product, scrutinizing it. Far as she could tell there wasn’t really anything that she would want. But with the resident makeup expert here, she was certain to get a few recommendations. Chiara was prepared to grab her phone and find a few examples. She had used pastel colors before, especially light pink. It had looked good, especially when she mixed it with a pastel blue when she did a Trans Day of Visibility look earlier in the year. She also had a sunflower inspired look for Vincent Van Gogh's birthday. Suffice to say, she had figured a lot of these looks out back in March this year.
Before she could show Iris these looks, two other girls came up and immediately began talking to them and asking a lot of questions. She knew Molly and Dani were fashionable girls with nerdier interests, which was fun every now and then. She hadn't done many cosplay looks or looks inspired by films and cartoons. It would be fun to try though, so Chiara would have to find the right inspiration.

Mhm? Mhm to what? To doing a video or it just being for her? Probably the video, since Dani had asked her as well? Chiara wasn’t really chatty, Molly supposed? She’d never really seen her talking? Didn’t that get boring?

Oh right, Chiara wasn’t the most talkative of people. Actually, now that she thought about it, she couldn’t recall Chiara talking at length. She hoped she wasn’t overwhelming the poor girl with her enthusiasm for the subject matter.
She walked over when she and Molly were ushered to come closer by Iris. She crowded around Chiara, trying to make sure she wasn’t too much in the other girl’s personal space while sharing it with Molly. She looked at the phone, seeing some LGBTQ+ stuff and a sunflower-themed look. Dani hummed to herself, nodding her head approvingly at the sample Chiara was showing them. This was good stuff she thought, maybe not something she’d use but it was good nonetheless!
She backed off, smiling delightfully as she clapped her hands together.
“Good stuff as always, Chiara.” Dani said. “I am eager to see what you’ll do next. As I said, your make-up work is really inspiring and helpful.”

She looked at the phone, seeing some LGBTQ+ stuff and a sunflower-themed look. Dani hummed to herself, nodding her head approvingly at the sample Chiara was showing them. This was good stuff she thought, maybe not something she’d use but it was good nonetheless!
She backed off, smiling delightfully as she clapped her hands together.
“Good stuff as always, Chiara.” Dani said. “I am eager to see what you’ll do next. As I said, your make-up work is really inspiring and helpful.”
Chiara tensed up a bit when Iris leaned a bit onto her. She wasn't that used to being touched, so it was a bit jarring. She almost dropped her phone, but had adjusted her grip. Dani and Molly each had gathered around to look at the pictures, complimenting the March pastel looks she had done.
Dani had mentioned finding Chiara's work inspiring and helpful. Chiara blushed a little and nodded. Sure, she was used to getting praise in her feeds, but being praised in real life wasn't that common.
She smiled at Dani.
"Thanks."
Chiara's gaze then glanced over and her eyes widened. There was an eyeshadow single case that looked almost exactly like the picture she took of the advertisement.
"Pardon," she said, stepping away from the girls and stepping over to it. She held it in her hand, comparing it to the picture. She squinted to make sure it matched. It was a good price, within her budget for this trip. Her mind began to race with ideas for what she could do with it, whether she went for a replication or something original.

Chiara actually said something, which surprised Iris enough to keep her from reacting when Chiara also tensed and moved away from her hand. Maybe she should have asked before grabbing Chiara's shoulder like that. Iris almost moved to follow when Chiara continued the trajectory away from her, her attention apparently grabbed by something she had noticed on the shelf nearby. She realized a second too late that it'd be pretty weird to start following Chiara around like a baby duckling or something, and she ended up just kind of oddly shuffling in place before she managed to catch herself.
Iris took a moment to recover herself and then turned back to Dani and Molly. "So! What are you guys doing? Aside from, uh, you know. The regular mall stuff." After another moment too long of space following her words, she flashed a grin.

So what if all we ever draw is a nude man, or the same nude man over and over in all sorts of provocative positions? Context, not content! Process, not subject! “Oh, not a lot? Just regular mall stuff?” Molly said as she picked up one of the make-up cases. “I’ve been dragging Dani around looking for nice things, and we’ve been talking about fighting game costumes and Dragon Age and stuff?”
Molly looked at the make-up case she was holding, wrinkling her nose, then picked up another. A lot of the sets had yellows like what she wanted, but choosing was hard.
Meanwhile, Chiara had just laser-focused in on a single case. How could someone be so focused? Was that what Chiara used her energy for instead of talking? Molly slid over to her, now that she was for the moment less crowded. She still kept a bit more distance than she would with Dani as she leaned forward a little to peer at what Chiara had chosen.
“How do you pick so easily?” Molly asked curiously. “It takes me foreverrrrrr, but you’re just like--” Molly raised her hands, one still holding two separate make-up cases, to frame her eyes like she was wearing blinders. “--right in on it?”
