My Refuge and My Fortress
Day 3 night.
My Refuge and My Fortress
Amos stared up at the structure next to him. Taking note of the high steeple of it that peered over to the right like it was trying to ape the tower of Pisa. If that thing fell over during all this, better not be on him.
They found themselves by a church. They had to go up a hill to get to this one; his travel buddy suggested it as the dark started to come out. Amos agreed to that, figured with it being night soon; it would be for the best to hunker down.
They hadn't found much success since the mine; they hadn't found much at all since the mine. That was fine by Amos, sure, but Aion? Shit must have bothered him, and that whole thing that went down at that building. It was like they wasted their time.
Some part of him did feel bad that they did not check if Przemek was fine; or if it was even him, but... could they take that chance? Should they? They were still trying to find that research station and were bumbling around the outside for too long.
Now, they found a place to hang out for the night and cover each other, which was great. Take the good things that they could get.
That is if no one else was here.
"Gonna take a quick look." He said as he moved up to the door. Amos carefully opened it and peered inside.
He couldn't see anybody, but he could see stuff that had been piled up, barricades and shit. Someone had been here, but how long ago?
He turned and waved over to Aion before going inside.

Aion thought it was funny in a way.
An atheist coming to a church for shelter for the night. He wasn't really a hater on people who believed that stuff, no. His family used to go to church a lot when he was a little kid and they pretty much stopping going after his older brother's... death. It made sense to him as he remembering seeing his Mom praying to God for Dillan to survive. No such luck. There was no God there to save him. His parents were more anti-religion than himself personally.
He had been a big bully over the years, but he never attacked anyone for beliefs. He felt like that was something taboo to do.
Aion was relieved when Amos waved him over and he jogged over to the other boy, panting softly. God, he felt a lot more exhausted than he thought he would be. His body felt like it was heavy at times.
It still felt frustrating that they haven't gotten to the radio station. But Aion knew that he couldn't complain too much. It wouldn't help either of them in the long run if he cried and whined all the time.
He stepped inside.
"Wow."
Did he sound like he was about to pass out at any moment? He hoped not.

Amos put his hands in his pockets as he looked to the back of the church, past the red carpeting, to see the pulpit and altar there. The pews were blocking windows and doors, which must have been a lot of work pending on which of their classmates did this.
It was as he pondered this that he heard his travel buddy. He sounded tired. After their day of bumbling around, he got why, and with his head being like it was...
Sure, it had been days, but one can't disregard shit like that.
"You alright?" He tried to keep a neutral face at this, but the worry was probably on his face for this one. With the pews the way they were, they would have to pull one out of those heaps if he were to sit, if not on the ground.

Aion wanted to say that he was completely fine, but that would be a lie. He wished that he wasn't in this state right now as sometimes he felt like he slowed the both of them down as they would have take several breaks when his head decided to fuck him over at times. He wished that he could be more useful, but.... What could he do other than punch or kick people in self-defence or in Amos' defence?
Not that he had to fight anyone over the last few days.
"Not really. I feel like I could just fall asleep and never wake up again." He said with an honest sigh and then he glanced over at where the pews were set up. "Well, shit. It definitely looks like someone or some people were busy here. Fuck...."
He then wanted to ask Amos a serious question.
"Do you think we should have stayed to see if Prezemek wasn't setting us up?" He asked, feeling a bit uncertain about it. "I guess I just got paranoid.... And panicked like a fucking baby. Ugh...."

Amos stood still as he looked up to the ceiling, hands fidgeting in his pockets. Aion was asking something heavy here, and Amos had to think about it. That and he was still not good. It's been days now, but that stuff lingers on you. Worrisome stuff when you hear the words "never wake up again".
Should they have stayed? Check if Przemek was toast or not. Silence hung in the air before his words carried across the church.
"I don't know. The whole thing was weird, those voices stopping 'an all, walking off from that red flag was probably the best choice."
"I think."

Aion let out a small sigh. There was no point in him lingering on what happened back there, right? Amos wasn't wrong about it all just being odd and weird. Maybe Prezemek had been used as bait. Or maybe he had been all alone. He wasn't sure what to think anymore. People were still dying, people were still murdering. He had barely done anything to help towards their escape plan. He wondered where he could even go from here.
He stepped further into the church. It felt so strange to be inside one after so many years.
"I think you're right, Amos. I think I should stop thinking about it, otherwise, I feel like I'll go fucking insane." He commented with a bitter laugh and a slight shake of his head. "Man, we really did luck out with this place, huh?"
He brushed his feet over the dirt on the floor, pondering over what to do next.
"We really suck at following maps, huh?"
He laughed softly, glancing over at Amos with a small smile. It might have been the first time he had even really smiled at him in a genuine way.

"We did." He muttered, even though the place looked like the pits, but now he'd take that over the unknown. Sorry, Przemek. Aion was taking it in stride despite everything. That's what surprised him about this guy; everything he'd known about him should have made this more complicated, but he'd taken this like a champ.
Even with his head throbbing like it was about to pull a scanner.
And then he smiled at him, and that took Amos off-guard. It was, what, three, almost four days in. The first time he got a smile out of the guy. He did not know what to make of it, but maybe things were looking up for them.
"I was never any good at that. I was better at other stuff, mostly camping."
Amos cleared his throat and lifted his right hand to scratch the back of his neck.
"Anyway, someone gotta look after ya, and I sure didn't think Daniel was gonna do that." He gave him a smile of his own.

Aion didn't think that a quieter guy would have been much comfort in the beginning of this. Sure it had only been a couple of days, but being in a survival situation made it feel so different. He wasn't the most nicest guy himself. But after getting a hit on the head, it felt like he had mellowed out a bit. Despite still swearing a lot. There was no point in him getting angry at everything. They were all in the same scenario and him being a hissy bitch about it wasn't going to help out anyone.
"Heh. Really would have preferred camping than this place." He admitted. "Maybe not out in the snow and cold weather tho. I would have complained my ass off about that truthfully."
He then blinked at what Amos said. Oh, the dude was smiling at him now. That was crazy.
Aion laughed a little. "I feel like Daniel and I would have bickering like complete babies and that would have made my headache worse." He said simply and then he hummed softly. "Thanks for not bailing on me, man. Really. I'm surprised that you could even stand being around me. I.... I didn't really have a good reputation at school. I still don't, I was a very shitty person more after...."
He stopped for a moment.
"...Anyway, still thanks for sticking with this purple-hair punky loser who got owed by a god-like plate." He smirked in delight.

There was a loud knock at one of the windows on the right side.

Amos gave a small laugh. It was true; he did not expect things to work out the way they had. Despite how their partnership started, it had been a fruitful one in the sense of not being dead, hurt, or anything like that.
"No problem there, buddy. With me around, you ain't getting hit there again."
"Hopefully."
There was a knock.
Amos' smile vanished, and his head quickly turned to the source of the knock; he scurried over to the makeshift barricade. One of his hands rested on it, and the other held out towards Aion, open-palmed. His eyes were wide as he thought about what he was going to do.

Aion felt himself taking a sharp inhale of oxygen when he heard a very loud knocking sound at one of the windows and he let the air out slowly when Amos went over to check it out himself. Aion wasn't sure what to think about their moment getting interrupted, but well, it wasn't like other people weren't looking to hide out at the church. It was kind of warm as well so that would be a big bonus for people who despised the cold weather.
"Shit." He muttered quietly, staying where he was standing and he glanced towards one of the pews and then over at the church entrance. "...."
Was that person planning to come into their web of safety?

A louder knock echoed by the same window.
A pause, which didn’t echo, and hushed steps lost to the cold.
Now the noises occurred by the front door and seconds later in came a huffing and puffing Adam with a noticeable limp, pool cue ahead as if holding a lance. He knew it had belonged to Zora, and thanks to the announcement he was also aware of her status. If you asked him to repeat any of the rest, it would be fruitless. Wasting energy wasn’t his thing.
The stance wasn’t intentional, he was too focused on maintaining a certain image, and he was pleased to see he wasn't alone.

Amos stared at the boy that had emerged from the front door and burst into their sanctuary, his eyes darting between him and Aion, trying to gauge if any funny business was about to go down and how to approach this.
The guy was limping and had a pool cue in his hands, not doing much better than Aion, it seemed; Amos was trying to place who he was since he'd seen this guy before. He had different colored hair, a bit like Aion, but not the same style. It was... Adam something, Lader?
Amos had heard stuff about this guy, funny business, and such. Good and bad. If he tried anything, they could just run; ain't much he's doing on that leg.
Amos took steps to the side, away from the barricade and towards Aion. He cleared his throat, gave a wave, and asked:
"What's up?"

And that person sure did make an entrance. Because for a second, Aion honestly thought that it was his on-and-off-again boyfriend. Because of that damned pink hair. For fuck sake. Of course, he wasn't here, they had a break-up argument before the trip and that he didn't want to go on a boring trip with Aion. Aion wished that he had stayed back home as well, but his stubborn ass wanted to go as a big fuck you to his kind of ex.
So yeah, Aion noticed that it was Adam. He noticed the dramatic pose and all he could think was that Adam looked like a complete dork right now. Aion let out a small snort and he tried to fake it as if he was clearing his throat awkwardly.
He felt relieved when Amos came back closer to him and he glanced back at Adam, noticing that his leg looked a bit fucked up.
"...You're cool, right?" He asked, feeling a bit suspicious of the new boy in their comfort zone.

“Huh?”
The musical lilt in Adam’s tone peaked when he dragged the word out, then it fell while he calculated his next step. The calm atmosphere was unexpected; very different to his first encounter with a group of people and somewhat on the same level as the last one. Two nobodies at first glance, but he knew their names. At least now, no one could run away. The door behind him closed shut.
"I was attacked! Some fuckers… I don't know," he groaned, pointing to the general direction of the windows. "It's dark and I think they're gone now." He shook his arms as if trying to loosen them up, some snow falling off of them. A sniff, and then he asked, "You're gonna let me stay, right? Right?"
