V8 Weapon Suggestions Are Open

#1

Post by backslash »

Attention handlers:

Now that you've all had a nice April fool, here's the real announcement. As we continue with preparation for launching V8, the time has come for us to give the floor over to you guys for a little while and once again open up our inbox to weapon suggestions. We've done this for the past few versions, and it always gets us some fun, weird, and lethal items to add to the weapon list for the upcoming version.

The rules are as follows:

1) Only one suggestion per handler. We won't be doing do-overs if you change your mind, so by all means take your time to mull over what you think is best to send in.
2) You must submit the suggestion via PM to the SOTF_Help account. Please title your message with "Weapon Suggestion" or we'll get very grumpy.
3) If you post a suggestion in this thread, it will be ignored and it will also make us grumpy.
4) There is NO guarantee that your weapon will make the final list in exactly the form that you submitted it, nor that it will make the list at all.
5) Please ensure your suggestion is practical. Make sure they are something most high school students could reasonably carry around, something that actually exists, and something which won't kill the person who gets it just for looking at or touching it.
6) We are looking for suggestions that fit under one of these 3 categories:
- Weapons: Knives, Guns, Melee Weapons
- Useful Non-Weapons: Extra food, second first aid kit, matches, poison, fishing pole, binoculars, etc.
- Gag Weapons: Shake weight, Carol Channing record, water pistol, etc.
7) The weapon must be useable. If the weapon is too complex for the average high school student to use, we can't include it.
8) Once you have made your suggestion, you cannot go back on it and say, "I meant ____" You will have to wait and see if we require more ideas.

One last note on joke/gag weapon submissions: please note that we have gotten pickier about what we accept in this category over the years, as past joke weapons have largely been something that provides a moment of weirdness or amusement before being immediately discarded and never being relevant to the character who gets it again. Ideally, a joke weapon will have the potential to be used for something (if not necessarily its original intended purpose), will not be instantly dated to the time that it was submitted (ie a direct reference to current memes or site in-jokes), and will be something that handlers can potentially have fun with just as much as an actual weapon or utility item.

Weapon suggestions will remain open until we begin the final rostering before V8, and we eagerly await what you all have in store for us this time. Any questions not covered above can be asked in this thread. Have fun!

For weapon submissions, can we assume that any (non-joke) weapon that fits the guidelines given above and was used in a previous version is already on the list that staff are considering? Considering we all have only one submission each, it'd be a shame to use it up on something that is already being considered.

Weapons that were used in previous versions may be on the list, but are not guaranteed to be. You may ask for clarification before making your submission so that it is not wasted on something we already have in mind (though please ask in a PM to staff, so we can maintain some of the mystery).

How many examples of a weapon need to exist in the real world? For example, would a prototype firearm be allowed, even if only one exists? I ask due to the presence of weapons such as the Pancor Jackhammer in prior versions.

In general we are looking for items that are not one-of-a-kind or otherwise so rare that it would raise too many questions about how the AT got them or why they would go to the trouble of getting something so rare. The Pancor was a holdover from older practices, and given that it was destroyed during V7, it too will no longer be appearing on the weapon list.
