Cedar kept up. That was as much as she could reasonably expect of herself.
- Cedar Dalisay cont. -
The buildings of the research complex were foreboding to approach. Lots of windows, lots of doors, tints and thick glass hiding potential eyes observing. Cedar wouldn't have blamed Fitz for electing to turn back with so many blind spots heralding their arrival, one well aimed bullet through a window and none of them would have known what had ended their life.
It was like... Cedar didn't necessarily like that her thoughts had become such a rote, Wikipedia-esque dissertation on the macabre, but it was better than silence. There was little to be said between the three of them without Cedar's mind burning out from the below par translation services on demand. Considering the threat posed by shadows in the corner of her eye and strange rumbling noises in the distance that left as suddenly as they'd come was at least an activity to partake in, besides dourly considering the relentless pace of wear and tear on her feet that she wouldn't be resting anytime soon.
They kept going. Maybe Fitz was also too tired to object.
The first door they tried led into an extensive open space, almost as large as the JEM gymnasium if Cedar's sense of depth perception trained by years of drawing anime tiddy hadn't already totally degraded. What looked like lab tables looked increasingly like lined up coffins the poorer the light got away from the lab windows.
A fishy malodor vaguely lingered. Cedar almost thought it was a corpse.

“This room smells like everything,” Fitz said, covering his nose and mouth with one hand to block out the mixture of smoke and strong fish as he peered into the room as well, looking easily over Cedar’s shoulder due to over a foot of height difference.
They’d crossed the island, deciding against the town in favour of the research station. Nothing had gone wrong on the way. No-one had been seen.
He took a few steps in, moving past Cedar to make sure he was ahead of her, then started wandering about the room. Peeking around tables, scanning the floor in particular. Rifle held clumsily in one arm, the other still covering his mouth. The grip on both the rifle and over his nose got tighter as he got closer to the smell.
Eventually he stopped, looked downwards, and let go of his mouth in order to crouch and grab something. When he straightened up, he was gingerly holding a small fish in a similar manner to how one would hold a used diaper.
He sniffed it, despite the smell already being obvious from a distance, then yanked his head back and held it away from him.
“Oh, jeez.” He lifted the discarded Surströmming above his head and looked back. “Cedar, smell this. It’s horrific.” Despite the smell, there was a small, relieved smile on his face.

A groaning noise could be heard, as if someone was just waking up.
It came from behind a table Fitz hadn't checked yet.

[Tenshi Marie Anastasie Fukushima Yves continued from Welcome To Camp Nightmare]
Ugh, what was that smell? Tenshi wrinkled her nose as she followed behind Fitz and Cedar. She wanted a bed and a room with a roof that wasn't half-rotted, and... well, what was it her mother said? Beggars can't be choosers? Fair enough advice on murder island, but Tenshi didn't want to sleep in a room that smelled like the thing made of rotten fish from Sweden or Norway or one of those Nordic countries mom used to visit. Unless it wasn't fish. No... no, it had to be fish.
And what did you know! Fitz lifted up the culprit, and Tenshi was probably bang-on, even if she couldn't recall or spell the word. Praise the lord! Tenshi didn't know what she'd do if it really was a corpse, and luckily she'd never find out.
Tenshi couldn't help but giggle, staring at the rotten, foul-smelling fish. She could surmise Cedar and Fitz were having a laugh about it through their own words, so she didn't look to Cedar for a translation.

"Oh jeez." Cedar's smile was abstract art at it's most dubiously valuable- a splash of off white and teeth white and pale green, a relieved smile draining the tension from her face, sudden profound nausea draining the tone.
"Don't make us have to smell that. Please? Like, if we throw it out hopefully that doesn't constitute a war crime."
She glanced back at Tenshi. Mrs. Eliza- Tenshi's mom, who Cedar was on close enough terms with to use first name basis when Tenshi wasn't present- travelled a lot for work, and Cedar now remembered her having brought back a tin of fish once that had needed to be handled the same way a bomb was defused. A raised eyebrow.
< YOU -- KNOW -- SMELL > Why did she know the sign smell again? Probably some covert code to figure out who to accuse of farting in class?
Cedar glanced back, promptly startled and stumbled herself ass first into a lab bench when she heard the noise of the living a scant few meters away. Cedar's monosyllabic response was louder. More of a cuss because she'd rammed straight into her tailbone.

((Alex Avanesian continued from Broken Angels, Wingless, Cast from Heaven's Gates))
Behind.
He was behind.
Even though Alex told himself it was a marathon, not a sprint, or one of those similar mantras that people used to justify their failures, a fear crept up his spine as he listened to the announcements. Evie was alive, and presumably was telling everyone she saw about him. The other girls would probably be telling everyone they saw about the creepy dude with a bloody spear - not that it was bloody anymore, he'd wiped it on some bedsheets from the dorms upstairs - and the chances of him getting a good ambush was dropping and dropping.
A part of him, though, was glad that Evie was alive.
Another part wished that he'd aimed better.
Lost in his own head, Alex's ramblings and thoughts cut off like a music box slammed shut when he saw a group of people up ahead, moving into another building. Fitz and two other girls, and Fitz had a gun. A friend, hopefully one who hadn't heard about what he'd done. Soon they'd become rare. Friends tended to stop being friends once you put your life ahead of theirs, prioritised them dying so you could live. But Fitz didn't know that yet.
And the weapon he was carrying looked very much like a scoped rifle.
And so, after waiting a couple of minutes to make sure that Fitz and his friends weren't going door-to-door offering death at the end of a rifle, Alex cautiously followed them in. The first thing that hit him when he pushed open the door was a rotting stench. Maybe one of the dead would be here. Really, that was the funny thing about SOTF. Everyone swears they won't play if they get picked, that they'd work together to escape, or they'd defy Danya's wishes, or something equally naive. And then, when the cards are down and Danya's played his hand, the first thing the same people who preached pacifism do is kill.
One of the uh, Filipino girls, the deaf girl and Fitz. Only Fitz had anything of use, though, and in a close-quarters-combat scenario that rifle would only be of use as a bludgeon. But the use of the rifle was swept from his mind when Alex made the connection of its identity. A Walther WA 2000. One of like, 175 in existence. For a brief moment, a smirk played on his face, thinking about how Brant would have a total meltdown trying to figure out how they got one of those, checking through all of Datadude's streams to see if he can track a serial number and identify the exact gun. Could be 1/175, could be 175/175.
"Hey, Fitz!" Well, if he could get his hands on it, he'd sure give Brant a closeup. Closing the door behind him with his shoulder to keep whatever warmth the building had inside, Alex just glanced between the trio. "And, uh, you two."

“Throw it out? This is probably a better weapon than the rif--”
Fitz cut off abruptly at the sound of the groan, head snapping in the direction of the noise. He lowered the dubious herring, staring around, before his eyes flickered back towards the other two. He put the herring down on a nearby table and, after his gaze lingered on Cedar’s similar flinch, he moved his gaze to Tenshi and put a finger to his lips – immediately wincing again, as the smell of the fish had remained on his gloves.
A voice came from a completely different direction, and Fitz nearly dropped the rifle, fumbling it in his grip before clinging tightly to it and holding it tighter to his chest.
“Jesus, Alex, hold--” Fitz cut off, then motioned for him to be quiet, just for a moment, as he looked back—eyes following a trail of splatters - not blood, not gore, but juices that were a little similar – and half-burnt pieces of paper and plant.
Fitz saw the source, curled up underneath a nearby table. Surrounded by what looked like the remains of a stoner’s gathering.
He almost pressed his closed fist to his mouth – once again forgetting about the fish smell, and jerking his head away at the last second - before he said, “Uh, okay. I think she’s alive.” Making the sign – half of it at least, doing a bastardized version with one hand – for ‘person,’ and pointing downwards. “Just, uh… weed.” This time, as he mimed at Tenshi, he held up four fingers, then two, then made a zero with his thumb and forefinger.
Finally, to Alex, he said, “Sorry. Hey.” Eyes straying over to lock on Alex’s spear, now that he’d decided the person underneath the table wasn’t the problem. One foot sliding back slightly, though not properly taking the step. He made no gestures at Tenshi – neither 'person,' the established sign for friendly, or otherwise – regarding Alex.

More groaning. Now combined with shuffling as the girl, still not-quite-there, attempted to rise into a seating position.
"W-where..." The question lost track after the first word.

Tenshi had raised her hands and was about to explain that yes, she did know the smell, but she couldn't name it, when Fitz and Cedar were startled by something unseen. Her own startling was delayed, in the slight way that any mimicry would be delayed, but it was two-fold: her companions could hear danger coming, thank god for that, but Tenshi had to rely on their senses, second-hand. She knew that. Now she understood that. A little bit more of how fundamentally fucked Tenshi was without her aids came into awful clarity, entering through her widened eyes.
The next few moments were a bit of a confused blur for Tenshi. They were looking here, then there, and someone else was here. Alex? Weird SOTF guy Alex? Gross. Also, what was all this grass-looking stuff littered about?
Fitz waved his hand, up and then down like he was chopping something. Tenshi had no idea what that meant. Probably something they agreed on last night that she immediately forgot about. Then he signed 4-2... 0? That, she understood. She was, after all, a citizen of the internet like everyone who was anyone... more pressingly, how did they get weed on the island? Did someone get assigned weed as a weapon? Why would you smoke it then? What if it was poisoned?
Alex was talking, but Tenshi didn't really care to listen, or even wait for a translation. Honestly, she kinda wanted to open her mouth and tell him to fuck off, but he and Fitz seemed to be on friendly terms. As if she needed another reason to not like him.
Instead, she recomposed herself, and turned to Cedar. Now, what was she going to say?
<<YES>> she confirmed, pointing to the fish. <<CANNOT--FINGERSPELL>> (which was true because she couldn't spell surstromming or whatever) <<BUT--YES--KNOW>>.

Cedar stumbled to life. A simple table corner to the ass was a fairly trivial recovery period for most but for Cedar and her paper thin constitution there was a moment of seeing God, and having just enough time to give Him the finger before she hauled her agnostic ass back to reality.
"Fuck if I could've gotten assigned the weed. Medical Mary actually works for me sometimes." Had to be the right strain though or it'd be about as bad as any other trigger onto her hellscape intestines. Cedar took a moment to assess the situation. People. Things. Happening. She translated Fitz's signing at Tenshi in her own head and then translated the words that came out of his mouth and then other people also spoke and did things? Seemed like she'd gotten the order of events at least modestly in line with reality's version.
Alex she recognized as one of Fitz's many many odd friends. He was one of the more aggressively shitposty ones who'd been part of that nearly successful campaign to install that giga-weirdo Abhishek as school council president dictator of the school. Not really her scene, what the normies of JEM did. Not even the edgy normies.
Cedar filled in the blanks for Tenshi. She also knew the code sign for friend and traced it, contemplating Tenshi's response for a moment. Cedar's brain, the cogs briefly jammed by the overclock heat caused by translation, more generalized pain, existential anxiety, cursing god, so on, jolted as she realized she recognized the voice of the person Fitz had found. She'd already been unconsciously maneuvering herself over to check on the out-of-it voice, but at that she immediately-
Wait, no. She had to explain lest it be lost in communication. Dutifully Cedar translated Dawn Montogomery's presence to Tenshi by pointing a finger at the desk and signing, again, < PERSON >.
Then she immediately rushed over.
"Dawn, holy crap. What happened?" Cedar knew how to offer a lot of forms of help but first aid wasn't her strongest suit. She didn't look particularly injured, but... Cedar took a knee at her friends side, short enough as she was the position made her vanish from the other's fields of vision altogether.

Alex was ignored. The deaf girl - Tenshi? - kind of shot him a dirty look, but Cedar didn't seem too annoyed about him being there. They'd just assume he was another guy stumbling around the island blindly, trying to figure out how he'd perform an impossible escape or looking for his friends so he could end up dying with someone he knew. But no, he had a purpose. He knew what he had to do, and he was going to do it, despite all the doubts in his mind.
But right now, he was curious about the girl, the gun and the group in that order. Following Cedar and Fitz, Alex followed over at a casual pace. "I dunno, uh, maybe she got high and fell asleep? Kind of, uh, a really stupid thing to do here, especially since there's people playing running around." He didn't know if they'd ran into Evie, but by Fitz not shooting on sight, he could guess that they hadn't. "I, i, uh, I nearly ran into one." The lie slipped from his mouth before he could even plan something out in his head. But maybe if he lied about Evie, they could, uh, take her out for him. And her friend, Claire.
Although Fitz was acting weird. Maybe he was just worried that the other girl was dead, but Alex had noticed him scooting backwards. Maybe he was worried about the spear, but he had the arms advantage.
Just to make sure he wasn't being baited into a trap, Alex glanced over and made sure he had a clear path to the door, mapping out the steps and moves he'd have to make in his head, vaulting over desks, probably knocking Cedar over - although a stab would be better for distraction - and then waiting for someone to rush out that door for another stab. But, but, if Fitz was playing, he'd have just shot Alex on sight.
"Uh, how have you guys been, Have, uhm, uh, y-you seen anyone? Any of the, uh, SOTF club, anyone else?" She had been totally right. Imagine the legend status he would have attained on ithacaconspiracies if he'd legitimately dodged a SOTF version by the skin of his teeth. But hey, he could still be the SOTF survivor.
Just had, uh, to get there.

“At least she got some sleep.”
Fitz nodded a little once Cedar rushed forward to help. He took a couple of steps back, properly this time. Giving Cedar some space with Dawn, while at the same time shifting a little further back from anyone in the room.
“We haven’t seen anyone. We heard someone, but she wouldn’t leave the closet she was in.”
As he spoke, Fitz took another step back before he hoisted himself onto one of the tables nearer to one of the walls. He kicked his legs idly a little, two galaxy-patterned noodles, before resting the gun in his lap – which had been noticeably jostled by the movement in a way that was certainly not safe. He kept the barrel aimed away from anyone in the room, even as his eyes continued to follow the spear.
“Who’d you run into? What weapon? What’d they do?”
Idly, he smelt the glove on his hand, wrinkling his nose when the fish smell hit it once again. Only one hand on the rifle as he did this, far away from the trigger.

"Damn, y'all already woke up?"
Tully had woken up earlier than the others because of the urge to potty. In his still somewhat inebriated state, he'd wandered around the halls, unable to find a restroom, so he went outside to take a leak. Sometime after that, he decided to go onto a walk, the cold weather was kind of cozy for meandering around aimlessly and catching your bearing. Eventually, the cold had mostly sobered and woken him up, and he decided to go back to the crew. Allegedly, he didn't sober up all too well because he got lost. By the time he got back, he wasn't sure which building he'd left in the first place. The idea to just peek in the doorway and glance at whichever hallway was filled with fist sized holes of broken drywall hadn't occurred to him until he'd aimlessly wandered across the room he spent all of the previous day in.
He heard voices and stumbled in.
"..."
He almost thought it was the wrong room, except he recognized Dawn. It's just Mildred, Jacob, and Kathleen who transformed into different looking people.
"Where the fu-" Tully paused, glancing from within the room to down the hall to within the room to down the hall.
...
"Y'all look grim as fuck."

One last yawn.
"Huh?"
And then, the girl under the table awoke for real.
((Dawn Montogomery continued from intersection))
Unlike in many fictional stories, she knew instantly were she was, even if the last moments before sleep were a little hazy. She became also quickly aware that the voices around her were different ones from before, sans Tully. For example, in front of her was...
"Cedar!"
Seeing her friend safe and sound was a relief so big that Dawn tried to sit up and hug her. Due to her stiff legs, this process was less smooth than planned but somehow got the job done.
Cedar's clothes felt cold to the touch. Did the other girl spend some time outside? Where did she come from?
For the moment, Dawn cared little for such questions. Cedar was here and unhurt. The rest was subimportant.

Yeah no shit there was a per- ohhhhhh. Now Tenshi remembered that for some reason, they decided <<PERSON>> would mean friendly guy. Damn that had kinda weird implications in hindsight, were killers and robbers and Tenshi's enemies and other shady classmates not people? No, apparently. Well whatever, leave the philosophizing to the weirdos who were gonna major in anthropology or something after school. Could NOT be her.
Tenshi took a step forward, and looked at the friendly person. Oh hey, it was Dawn, another of Cedar's friends. Unfortunately, given Cedar's dating history, Tenshi could not safely say anyone who was a friend of Cedar's was a friend of hers. Dawn was pretty alright though. She gave a little wave, but stepped back to let Cedar handle the hangover... was it a hangover if you were high? They should invent a word for a hangover except you were high and not drunk.
She actually knew the sign for HANGOVER, weirdly enough. Make a fist, stick out your pinky and thumb, put your thumb by the underside of your chin, and move your hand sideways and out, away from the face. Tenshi idly signed just that, but in a kind of misshapen and lazy way, the sign language version of mumbling. Now, she was pretty sure the handshape was adopted from the sign WINE or ALCOHOL or something, so if she could just remember the sign for MARIJUANA...
Motion in the corner of her eye startled her out of her lexical experiment. This guy seemed kind of familiar? Tenshi was 90% sure she saw him around doing something stupid, or maybe he just overwhelmingly gave off that vibe to the point where her brain started making up fake memories of him doing something stupid. She stared and squinted at him, trying to put the face to a name.
