The Fool was her

Private!

The garages are very simplistic and built solely for the purpose of holding the station's fleet of vehicles. They feature two roll-up sheet metal doors, one rolled up enough for some to crouch under it and the other closed, along with a side door that has been frozen shut. Inside sit three vehicles: one all-terrain jeep that lacks a full set of tires and two snowmobiles.

She had ruined Teddie's life! He would be damned if he spent what may be the last days of his life w-with her! Why anyone would want to be in a group with her, in a game of life or death no less, is beyond him.

Luckily the others were also against the joining of Juanita. "Oh, Teddie has more than issues with her..." Jack muttered to Eden's statement.

Jack took a slightly nervous step forward and spoke up. "I really think you both should leave. None of us feel comfortable being in a bigger group. That and I F-frankly just don't trust you, Juanita." Jack cursed himself in his mind for stuttering. "A-And the name is Jack n-now." the very moment the words left his mouth he regretted it, and it took all his will power to not wince.

Juanita's teeth gnashed together. Teddie didn't trust her? He was the one who tried to take advantage by asking her out after her surgery. He was the one who tried to play on her vulnerability and get into her pants on the second date, and then accused her of only shooting him down because of his "condition." Like she was damaged goods and didn't have a right to be choosy.

Yeah, she'd confirmed the rumors - one time, to one person. But so what? He'd blurted it out loud enough for everybody to hear. The rumor was already out there, and she hadn't done any damage that his big fat mouth hadn't already. She'd already made her apologies and if he wanted to dredge it all up again to get people against her in a literal death game, then screw him.

She kept her hands up, let the haladie hang limp. Didn't want to broadcast what was about to happen until it happened. She and Ash were outnumbered two to one, but they had a weapon drawn and the element of surprise on their side. They just had to pick their moment.

Juanita took a measured breath. Her heart rate must have been through the roof. But it wasn't just adrenaline pumping through her veins right now, it was a justified, righteous anger. Despite the fire in her gut, she forced herself to be calm, measured in her reply. "All right. I guess that's fair, Te... Jack. If you want us to go, we'll go. And... for whatever it's worth, I'm sorry for... y'know... everything."

She dropped her gaze, looked down at the ground. An outsider might have mistaken this for guilt or shame, but Juanita had nothing to be ashamed of. In reality, she was checking for distance. Teddie had stepped forward, which put him just shy of stabbing range. Hopefully he'd still be distracted by the apology when she made her move.

Without looking up, she said, "We just thought... It's better to group up now, before things get more intense. Everybody's gonna have to fight sooner or later, and you can't make an omelette without breaking a few eggs, you know?"

After "eggs," she looked up. Her grip tightened while her lips were still forming the last you, and by the time she hit the question mark, the haladie was snapped into attack position.

A split second later, she launched towards Teddie, planting her good leg and dipping her shoulder to hit him like a linebacker.

Game on.

They had good reasons to keep them out. Apparently. Whatever had happened between Jack (sure, why not) and Juanita had never made it onto Ash's plate of things to care about.

She glanced at Juanita with the same neutral, appraising eye she had the others. That one had definitely hit. Ash could read jaw tension like it was Common Core.

Moment before the storm hit, eerily quiet. Ash glanced back Eden's way, a subtle softness to her gaze. First person she'd laid eyes on in a while who had in any way mattered to her. Ash had come to believe, in her still way-too-long time on this earth hurtling towards an anticlimactic end of unknown, that women could naturally communicate in ways most men were clueless about. Subtle shifts in body language could write essays, sometimes flowery, sometimes sparse. Or maybe Ash was full of it and most people misunderstood her smoldering, gothic intensity for undiagnosed ADHD.

What she was trying to communicate to Eden, ultimately. Sorry. It'll hurt less this way.

The problem was it'd probably still hurt a lot depending on Juanita's accuracy, but Ash had accepted that some suffering was unavoidable the moment she'd conceived of her crusade against life not worth living. World's least cynical Buddhist epithets right there.

Anyways, Juanita had said the thing. The crowd went mild. Game on, etc.

Ash, belatedly, acknowledged there were also two other dude NPCs. Three versus one wasn't great odds.

For them, rather. Ash moved fast enough to put herself between Juanita's job and the rest of them, while keeping her stance defensive, light on her feet. She imagined herself like a goalie, keeping to her zone. If any of them wanted to step forward, first punch thrown was free.

Jack and Teddie both knew that this would most likely devolve into violence. Both Juanita and Ash wanted to join the group and were met with hostility and distrust. In life, people are told to "Expect the unexpected."

Well who could ever expect to end up in SOTF? This is if he remembered correctly the 8th game, there must have been hundreds of kids in these games, and obviously, if they knew that going on that big overnight school trip would lead to the deaths of all but one. They would have stayed home.

The game had mentality screwed Teddie, But really could you blame him? Having to come to terms with the fact that you are most likely going to die. The fact that it's going to be a classmate, someone you spent the last few years with, who will be the one to kill you. It was all too much to just... Have to come to terms with it. In not even days, or hours but Minutes.

That's why he made Jack. To improve his chances of survival. So When Juanita brought up the fact that he was trying (and failing) to ignore, his grip on his weapon. A pair of scissors he found in his first-aid kit. Tightened.

Then she compared what was going to happen over the next few days to "Making an omelet." And Finally, she looked him in the eyes. And charged.

Expect the unexpected, that's what Jack/Teddie was doing. But even so, he hadn't expected her to just... be so willing. To try to hurt him. To try to kill him. He jumped out of the way just in time, and sadly in doing that he sent himself sprawling into the snow.

He felt the cold snow rapidly cool him. As he half crawled-half ran to put distance between him and Juanita-No his attacker. The metal of his "Weapon" was cold now that it was also covered in snow.

Things were not supposed to turn out this way.

Eden had hoped that Ash and Juanita would have left without there being any blood to shed and that was a silly dream that did not become reality. In reality, a member of her group was getting attacked by a girl who just set them up in a trap and she was pretty upset about it. Eden needed to make sure that Juanita wasn't going to hurt Jack badly. Or kill him for that matter.

But as she took a step forward, Ash was pretty blocking her path and Eden felt a wave of regret washing over her. Her eyes focused on Ash's own pretty eyes and it was like she was pleading with her eyes to make the other girl move out of her way.

This wasn't supposed to be happening.

"Ash, please." Eden let out a small, shaky breath and she slowly raised the naginata, making sure to aim it at Ash. She didn't want to, but if she had to fight to get to Jack.... She didn't really have a choice in the matter anymore. "Get out of the way. I have to stop her from taking things too far. Please."

Pretty eyes. Ash wasn't sure if it was a good or bad thing that it still kind of worked on her. This was a girl she'd had a crush on. Briefly, but long enough. A stillbirth was still human shaped, still mattered.

She could tell herself, consciously, that it was the sword in Eden's hand making Ash suddenly hesitant, not the softer and more human things.

"Eden. We're all going to die. This is the easy way out."

She took a step forward, staying out of range of the blade. One step carried a lot of weight. Ash was a little malnourished by now, but she still had her instincts, her speed, for the most part. Enough to crack a skull over the pavement. Maybe that'd be enough to get the rest of them to fuck off.

Ellis was granted about 48 hours of peace on the island. Well, it wasn't completely peaceful. There was a lot of crying and running, but there wasn't much fighting nor killing. He knew it wouldn't last forever, but he wished he had more of an idea when it would all crumble.

Juanita had gone for Jack. Ashlyn was also squaring up against Eden. Ellis was frozen in place.

"Oh god, oh god..." he muttered.

He quickly reached into his pocket and pulled out Marian's knife.

He looked to Timothy.

"What do we do?" he whispered.

Timothy was already digging through his bag like an agitated squirrel. His hands trembled as he pushed anything and everything out of the way and back into the way in a haphazard mess.

"We-we gotta get them to stop."

His fingers grazed over every which way until it passed over two of the metal tear gas canisters he was groping for. He lobbed one blindly at Ellis, not stopping to see if he even caught it, and dropped the whole bag to the ground.

He fumbled the canister around in his hand in sudden jerks as he tried to figure out how the hell you were supposed to activate it.

Eden didn't like the words that were coming out of Ash's mouth and she wanted to tell her that things didn't have to end in violence and death. But this was realistically a game of survival. A game of death. A game of lives. A game of despair.

"Looks like I have no choice then." Eden's mouth had shaped into a sad smile.

She gripped onto the naginata more tightly and she took a quick step forward towards the other girl, making sure to not slip in the slightly mushy snow.

She made sure to try to aim and jab towards Ash's right arm, trying to make her back off so that she could get to Jack and Juanita in time.

Ash nodded grimly. She considered smiling but it might've cut her heart up Glasgow.

"You don't."

Ash figured her other advice: don't try to save people, you'll only get hurt more, wouldn't have much traction.

Didn't have the time for it anyways. A bunch of shit was happening at once and Ash didn't have enough eyes to make sense of it. Motion meant danger. The only safe things were dead on the ground, and Ash wasn't ready to become one of those things. Not yet, not without putting up a better fight.

Eden had tried to stab right in. Bad call- not a lot of coverage. Ash easily cut past the blade and replied with a quick elbow to the collarbone, nice broad impact, a lot of weight. It gave her the momentum to push through where Eden had been standing.

No time to check if Eden was down for the count. She heard a body hit the floor, good enough.

"Juanita, hurry!"

Ash was already running right at Timothy. Not much distance, about two or three steps and she was flying at him like a torpedo.

Juanita's initial charge at Teddie had missed, but he'd gone sprawling anyway, victim of the snow and his own momentum. She blew past, unable to twist mid-stride thanks to the knee brace. She did a little hop-skip, transferring the weight to her good leg and sliding to a halt in the slush, blunting the inertia with her heel. She pivoted, then went after her target.

Teddie was crawling, trying to scramble away, a pair of scissors clutched in his shaking, snow-dusted hand.

She was fully in game mode now, back on the field. Every sense was heightened, every rapid-fire thought drawing a line between her and the win, every action bringing her one step closer to it. Direct thoughts, immediate actions. Nothing else.

She lunged forward, planted on her good leg, and used the momentum to drive her boot into Teddie's knuckles. He cried out. The scissors went spinning off somewhere, into the grey area outside the action.

Teddie slipped and fell onto his belly, clutching his stricken hand. Vulnerable.

Juanita thrust at him with the haladie, just as Ash shouted at her to hurry up and finish him. The words barely registered, but they diverted her attention for a fraction of a second - just long enough for Teddie to put up a defensive kick. She saw it coming, just barely, had to take an awkward step back as his heel whistled through the air where her knee brace had been, yanking the haladie back with her. The blade caught him across the back of the calf, drawing a red line through skin and denim alike.

One shot missed, but she was already lining up the next. She twisted her wrist, so that the haladie's second blade was angled towards him, and stabbed downward. She couldn't possibly miss.

Teddie could hear Juanita's course correct. His thoughts were a blur, he had never been in a fight. Yet his first would be would probably be his last. The others Eden, and Ellis were making noise but he couldn't really hear them. No all he could hear was his heartbeat, the sound of the snow crunching under him. And Juanita getting closer.

Then came the pain. Juanita's boot slammed into his hand, he screamed and clutched it but what really scared him wasn't the possibility of a broken hand. He dropped his weapon.

The next thing he knew he was laying in the snow. Fast, too fast. Everything was happening so fast.
"Juanita, hurry!"
That woke him up like a cold glass of water. His instincts told him to run. To run away from this battle, the garage, the island, keep running all the way home. But that just couldn't be. Ash told Juanita to hurry, finish him and move on.

Fight or Flight. When in a high-stress situation people either fight for their life or run for their life. Teddie is flight. Jack was made to fight. Against what his instincts told him he kicked at her.

Jack was rewarded with air and sharp hot pain in his calf. His second injury on the island. Jack knew that he would bleed before this game was over. That was a fact, hell he may even spill someone else's blood. But this was to soon, the third day and he already gained a wound that could kill him.

Jack looked up at the person who would kill him. He wanted to fight back but how can you avoid something like this?

Eden had been knocked down to the ground as Ash had mention push right through her and her balance had got corrupted by the other girl's connecting wiring. A horrible connection at that. Eden grunted awkwardly as she was on her side in the snow and she had somehow managed to keep a tight grip onto her naginata. It was like it was her own life line now. But now was not the time for her to get all sentimental about a weapon, just because it was from a video game that she liked to play a lot.

She noticed that Ash was heading right for Ellis and Timothy and that was all the distraction that she herself really needed.

She was now focused on Juanita attacking Teddie.

She swiftly got up to her feet and she made sure to take a quick run towards where they both were currently. She made sure that her balance was more smooth and steady as she rushed forward with her steps and she made sure that her weapon was raised in a striking position.

She stopped sprinting as she was pretty close to where Juanita was and she swung the naginata towards the girl's head.

Hoping to get a clear hit on her.

The adrenaline had its hooks in her now; it was pure energy, crackling through every nerve, every muscle, every sinew of her body.

When Juanita was this deep in the flow, it was hard to describe what she experienced. Her thoughts didn't come in sentences or even words. They weren't really even thoughts, they were barely even decisions. They were just... wants. She'd have a flash, an image of the outcome she wanted - this, and her body would react to create it.

In real time, it took about a second and a half for all of this to flash across Juanita's mind: thisNO!thisCAN'T!THISthisthis𝅘𝅥𝅮 this.

this - Teddie with the haladie buried in his guts.

Her arm plunged towards hi- NO! Eden appeared out of her blind spot, a blade was rushing towards her head. Her haladie hit the dirt and snow, a hair's-breadth from Teddie's stomach. No time to lift it back up, no chance of repelling the attack.

this - Juanita throwing herself to the side just in time, rollin-

She shifte- CAN'T! The knee brace-

THIS - Juanita's head abruptly jerking to the left, the blade just missing - a few shorn hairs hanging in the winter air to show how close it'd come.

The world tilted crazily and something silver and black whistled past her sclera.

this - ...?

Everything was exactly the same as it was. Eden missed?

this - Yoshi sitting in his kart, whistling that "PHEW!" music note that the character does when you hit a banana peel but mash B and don't spin out.

She took a breath, unaware that she'd been holding it. Her cheek and ear stung a little.

this - Willem Defoe grinning in Spider-man.

The haladie came up again, this time pointed squarely at Eden.

Eden had seen a splatter of red like a crimson blossom.

She had hit her target. But she hadn't done enough.

It just wasn't enough yet.

She tried to twist her body towards where Juanita had dodged out of the way.

Her foot gave out on her, tilting her off-balance and scrambling to not fall again.
