V9 Concepts Thread
V9 Concepts Thread
I've heard the idea of returning the concept of a concepts thread for V9 tossed around. Having seen this topic come up repeatedly in chat, it's made me think that bringing this back might be a good way for people to get advice and opinions on their characters before they decide on them earnestly. As a result, I've decided to unveil V9's Concept Thread. Here, you can post your character concepts for others to give their opinions. That said, there's gonna be a couple informal requests:
1.) Be polite.
Nobody comes to the site to get trashed. If you intend to participate in the thread, I—and likely the rest of the site writ large—would appreciate a level of courtesy and kindness and understanding. If you don't like a concept, you're allowed to express your concerns, but please—please, please, please—try to monitor your tone a little. I don't want anyone to get hurt due to this thread. We're a community of equals and friends.
2.) Be efficient.
Try to keep your posts relatively concise, whether that be the character concepts themselves (we don't need your character's entire profile, just a synopsis of them as a person—if you want to post their full profile, include it as under a spoiler tag) or comments on them. Long posts are likely to clog the thread up, and part of the point is making it a convenient way to gather informed opinions on your concepts, defeating the purpose.
3.) Have a plan to kill everyone you meet.

The concept has already gotten a planning thread, but I don’t think this would hurt.
Concept: A socially awkward, neurodivergent member of the wrestling team who resents being neurodivergent.

Evening everyone, Jacob here! I'm happy to say that I have three of my concepts essentially confirmed in my head, here they are if you wish to review them:
Skyla Monroe: Perfect girl who has grown to resent the life that's been destined for her and wishes to change it by any means necessary.
Maggie Wilfred: The daughter of a Republican politician who wishes to break past her bland and stiff nature.
Murray Miller: A running-back who is dumb as a rock, but has a heart of gold.
I have room for one more concept, and for the sake of symmetry, I want it to be a guy. The problem is that I'm sure who I want it to be. Allow me to present them to you, let me know which one you think I should roll with:
Edwin Castellaneta: Son of casino royalty and an absolute tool of a person who wishes to "own" everyone.
Harry Dalton: Soft-spoken baritone singer who has slowly drawn the eyes of ladies due to his velvet voice and physical prowess.
Trenton "Trixx" Gardner: A feminine male doing everything he can to prove his worth to the wrestling team.
On a final note:

We already discussed relationships with your character, and I really like the idea of this socially awkward wrestler trying to make it through life as best he can, only for his internalized ableism to get in the way. It's a relatable thing that neurodivergent people struggle with and it's commendable that you're giving it a go. The one bit of feedback I'll give is that you'll want to be careful with how hard you go on the resentment, because if you go too hard, then that can go from relatable to uncomfortable in the blink of an eye. I trust you'll be able to find that happy balance, however!EllisWilson wrote: ↑Tue Nov 21, 2023 1:05 am The concept has already gotten a planning thread, but I don’t think this would hurt.

Okay, so everyone has already heard of Beau, Storm; and Inessa, but what about some of these characters???
Marino Jaivira “The Criminal”: Son of a convict whose influence has gotten the better of him.
Hobbies: Marijuana, baseball, motorcycles
Jody Mayfree "The Deep Diver": A tomboy tired of being imperfect.
Hobbies: Swimming, maintaining her diet, apocalyptic movies
Daylani Rozamine "The Unidentified": A talented girl with insecurities about her future self.
Hobbies: Drums, DIY projects, ducks
Pietro Garris "The Seeker": A wannabe influencer who's willing to do anything for popularity.
Hobbies: Online challenges, gaming, drawing
(All of these characters are still works in progress, and some of their names aren't finalized, but I just need your opinions on who would be better!)

I appreciate your feedback. I also thought about how I would need to balance the resentment bit. On to your characters:JacobAllTradez wrote: ↑Tue Nov 21, 2023 4:59 am Evening everyone, Jacob here! Skyla Monroe: I enjoy the idea of a seemingly ideal person having misgivings about their image. I feel like this can go in a lot of different directions once game time starts, which I consider a huge positive for any character.
Maggie Wilfred: Another character trying to alter their image, but I feel Maggie is sufficiently different from Skyla to be unique. My only concern with her is that she may come off as less dynamic than other kids, which I understand as being part of the premise, but it’s worth noting regardless.
Murray Miller: A good old fashioned high school cliche. Dumb jocks are great, but he could become a bit one note if you let him, though I don’t doubt you can handle it.
Now for the three new guys. Personally speaking I’m partial to Trixx, but that’s mostly because I’m bias towards both wrestling and feminine men. In the context of SOTF, I’d go with Edwin, because seeing this spoiled rich kid be put through the game would allow for some interesting evolutions to his charatcer.
I have three kids that I'm cooking right now.
The first is Priya. Any pronouns, including and especially it/its. Seemingly self destructive and extreme (scarification, likes deathmatch wrestling, a bit of an adrenaline junkie) but also placid and well-meaning. Strong disconnection from societal norms.
Second is Florrie. Chinese migrant, under a lot of academic pressure. She is about to implode at any minutes. Materialistic and neurotic. Likes collecting cute knives. A bit intimidating and no-nonsense but polite.
The third is Molly. Affectionately called "girlfailure." Started out as joke about gaylors and stan culture. Obsessive and stubborn. Rather black-and-white thinking. "Neurospicy" (undiagnosed.) Headcanons and writes fanfics of real people, including classmates. Delulu </3
Can't wait to see the tiktok kid (presumable tiktok.)
Also, I've never thought about dieting being a hobby before; it's more like... idk, maybe it's becuse I dieted for a long time and it was miserable lol.

I'm curious about Marino's backstory- is his marijuana habit related to it? What do you mean "got the better of him?" I confess that this snippit has hooked me.FlockOfHens wrote: ↑Tue Nov 21, 2023 6:59 am Okay, so everyone has already heard of Beau, Storm; and Inessa, but what about some of these characters???

Priya: My only real concern about this one is the scarification bit, as I’m not sure how a school might allow them to get away with doing that to themselves. Otherwise, I like the thrill seeker idea a lot.Yonagoda wrote: ↑Fri Nov 24, 2023 1:32 am I have three kids that I'm cooking right now.

Florrie: I can see a number of directions this character can go in, all of them interest me.
Molly: has my heart. She sounds like a laugh riot or a source of fangirl centric nightmares. Maybe both. Probably both.

I’ve got two kids on the burner right now! Here’s their rough pitches for your consideration:
First up is Sofia Banderas. Sofia is a highly organized girl with a strict sense of routine and order who’s heavily involved in the school yearbook and newspaper. She’s very controlling about the way she presents herself; prim, proper, and professional, she makes an effort to act “mature for her age.” Sofia deliberately represses herself, as she fears that if she lets her inner, more primal emotions out, she’ll fall apart. This fear stems from a greater one of following the footsteps of her parents, an alcoholic and a gambling addict stuck in a loveless marriage. Unfortunately for her, she now has a lot of bottled up aggression. As a perfectionist, Sofia’s hobbies are mostly things she can fine-tune and control: journalism, photography, graphic design, and strategy games, with the noted exception of her interest in insects.
The second is Jade O’Neal. Jade is quiet and polite, coming from a Catholic background; on the surface, she’s seemingly a perfect girl, with straight As and being on the cheer squad and school choir to boot. On the inside, though, Jade’s opinion on herself is quite twisted. Catholic repression, the need to "fit in," and the emotional distance of all her friendships has caused Jade to feel as if she’s something other than human. She flip-flops between believing she’s a monster and believing that she’s empty inside, and is torn between her desire for connection and fear that someone will discover her “true self.” I’m unsure on whether I’ll stick with this concept, but I was thinking of her fixating on another girl–a crush of hers, perhaps–as someone who can “save” her, harassing her in the hopes she’ll lash out at Jade and break the monotony of her life.

Im thinking either they keep it secret, or successfully argued that it's basically tattooin with extra steps (since certain body mod locations offer it, and they get it done professionlly.) Thanks for raising the concern; I'll do more research on it.EllisWilson wrote: ↑Fri Nov 24, 2023 2:27 am My only real concern about this one is the scarification bit, as I’m not sure how a school might allow them to get away with doing that to themselves. For Sofia I like the thematic use of hobbies that match her trying to present herself as an adult, the 'padding my resume at all costs' life is quite relatable! I also like the potential to juxtapose her airs of trying to be mature for her age with the teen emotional immaturity that is inherent to trying to repress natural instincts to fit an image you think is appropriate. Like, she's functionally just as immature as all her peers who put on a mask for whatever reason. That conflict always makes for a fun narrative, in my experience, so I'm looking forward to seeing that in action.apocalypseyuri wrote: ↑Fri Nov 24, 2023 10:33 pm I’ve got two kids on the burner right now! I'm hoping Jade makes it to being part of your cast, she's a character archetype that personally appeals to me and I'd love to read her in action! First off, bias towards the name and towards her being a repressed lesbian. Again, relatable. But the toxic relationship potential of what she's looking for in a partner to fix and complete her is very juicy, I personally love stuff like that. I'm always intrigued to see people's takes on repression due to religion as well, it's a personal topic that hits quite close and personal for me. Plus someone who thinks she's a monster. Like low key I relate to her concept in a lot of ways, and not in a way where I have expectations of her or anything, I just love seeing how people portray tropes that are near and dear to my own heart and personal experience!
For me I do want to offer any of my kids, but specifically I'm hoping for any warning flags anybody is getting for Raph because she's very much the most out there concept I'm interested in running this version. Not Beryl or Cedar levels or anything like that (I think), but I think she has the most potential to be a concept that doesn't land due to lack of realism and overbloat.

I'm gonna knock everyone out as best I can.
Florrie: The very moment I saw her, my first thought was that Skyla and Florrie would make great friends given their similar backgrounds. I can see her going many directions, all of them good. What kind of academic pressure is she under? Are her parents successful in their fields?
Molly: Oh god lol, this girl sounds like fun. I don't have much to say about her, I'd definitely consider bringing her on V9 as there's a lot of room for potential.
Jade O'Neal: I'm going to be honest, I can see Jade being a top-tier antagonist, or at least an anti-hero if you want to go that route. Everything about her screams someone who has become so trapped in her own mental war being believing she's a monster or she's a blank slate or a genuinely good person, she's become desperate for any sort of attention that doesn't resort to her revealing her "true" self. She feels that low about herself, that I can see her doing awful things in order to keep others from knowing this "real" her (lesbian, I presume), eventually leading to her becoming possessive and harassing towards someone else. 100% run with this character, if you play your cards right, she could be a highlight on the season.
Jody Mayfree: Oooh interesting, I like the idea of a tomboy who wishes to be perfect, perhaps there's some deep-seated resentment/identity issues regarding those higher up the social pyramid? I can see her being into surfing as well if you want to add to her label further.
Daylani Rozamine: I don't know why, but Daylani feels like the type of person who would go deep into SOTF, maybe even come out "victorious" when all is said and done. Something with these three hobbies might be able to find her identity on either one, be it a drummer, a mechanic, or a veterinarian. Of course, you can always add more hobbies along the way. If nothing else, I'd definitely consider running with her, you might have something with this concept.
Pietro Garris: The fact that Pietro is either decently notable, but nothing amazing or a laughing stock amuses me to no end, could make for great comedy hijinks. I endorse them for a run as well.
So Raph is...interesting. I like the idea that this well-liked girl, who despite being rich and charismatic, is a decent-hearted person who does what she can, even as she often struggles with paranoia with how people treat her. Her being extremely active outdoors to recharge her social battery and combat her introverted nature makes sense, though that does lead to my first question: What led to her gaining these interests, such as her love of guns and prepper culture? The other thing I'd like to ask, how did she get into authoritarianism? Is this a natural consequence with her doomerism? I do think this concept can work, but I'd answer these questions whenever possible and be very careful with how you handle the political side of her. You already said that it's a repressed side of her, so that's a good start. I'd be interested in seeing her on V9, just keep in mind the interests and political side chosen.
Priya: Deathmatch wrestling isn't a thing I'm into, but I can see why they might like them, given how it hands them an adrenaline rush. I like the idea of a self-destructive person with good intentions. My question is what leads to these self-destructive tendencies? It's it a short temper? A troubled past? Family issues? Anarchy? A combination of the mentioned names? This can help identify the root of their behavior and lead to further development.Yonagoda wrote: ↑Fri Nov 24, 2023 1:32 am I have three kids that I'm cooking right now.

Sofia Banderas: Sofia reminds me a lot of Total Drama character, Courtney, an A-Type person with a perfectionist streak a mile wide who tries to be an adult, but her primal tendencies risk seeping out of her when least preferred. I think where Sofia succeeds in that front is that want or need to be perfect and "mature for her age", having seen where her parents have gone in life. I can also see hints of ASD in her if you want to go that route, what with her being strictly routine and having a fixation outside of her hobbies. What kinds of emotions does Sofia want to keep repressed?apocalypseyuri wrote: ↑Fri Nov 24, 2023 10:33 pm I’ve got two kids on the burner right now! Here’s their rough pitches for your consideration:

Marino Jaivira: What kind of criminal are we looking at for Marino's father? Petty criminal? Gang leader? Something else entirely? There are a lot of angles you can go with this and I'm interested in seeing which one you choose. I've got three idiots. Okay they're mostly set in stone so it might not count but I still want some eyes on them to see if anything needs changing or if there's something I should watch out for. As for the actual concepts themselves,
Note: Will edit this later with a looksies at another persons concepts later, probably someone that goes after me because I dunno if anyone hasn't gotten one yet

After a conversation between writing two characters being paired romanticly and the decision to give Storm to another handler when the time comes, I have finally come up with the four characters to use, two of which may have been concept characters combined:FlockOfHens wrote: ↑Tue Nov 21, 2023 6:59 am Okay, so everyone has already heard of Beau, Storm; and Inessa, but what about some of these characters???
Beau Larkfinn "The Nomad": A feminine guy who developed a love for the outdoors during COVID-19. Back in middle school, he was considered to be a quiet and reserved student in his class. But during the harsh events caused by the pandemic, a desire to return to the outdoors called to him, like a sudden spark flashed through his eyes. He returns to the start of his freshmen years with a new and eccentric attitude, even starting a club that just so happens to be related to his interests.
He'll likely kill his classmates as a last-ditch option to protect his friends and club-mates.
Hobbies: Rock climbing, camping, plants, campfire cooking, exercise,
Inessa Highman-Roberts "The Photographer": A young female student who dreams of becoming like her photographer stepfather. Her biological mother and father have separated after her birth, so she doesn’t know who her father is. During her childhood, her mother fell in love with a photographer, who happily to her hand in marriage. Inessa took inspiration from her father’s pictures, from landscapes to portraits. After graduation, she plans to become a model photographer by working on a portfolio with the help of her boyfriend, Storm Stryder, who happily models for her.
She'll likely kill her classmates, but only if they try to kill her Stormy.
Hobbies: Photography, insects, fashion, manga, ghosts, Student Yearbook
Marino Jaivira "The Criminal": The sadistic son of a convict whose influence has taken over him. Before his juvenile actions, Marino was a normal student who became a bully victim in his old school due to his dad’s low-paying job. He had to endure more torture from his classmates when his father got arrested for vehicular manslaughter after his boss fired him. He reached a breaking point when a few students targeted his mother. After getting into a fight that almost resulted in a student being choked to death, he transfers to Red Rock with a toughened persona. It was better to fight others before they fought him.
He'll likely kill his classmates. After all, it's a good way to vent his stress.
Hobbies: Baseball, motorcycles, marijuana, fighting, devious licks, money
Remi Dayfree "The Troubled": A tomboy who's insecure about her imperfections. At the surface, she comes off as abrasive, but deep down she is troubled by her problems. Due to her parents’ high expectations, Remi always had the feeling to fit in with what the world wanted from her. As a result, she made many changes to her hobbies, friends, and even her appearance. Originally, she had planned to become a professional swimmer, but after unknown circumstances (still in the middle of figuring out what it would be), she had to quit the swim team. Now nearing her graduation, she’s still figuring out what she can do after the end of high school.
She'll likely kill her classmates if it means getting out of this shitty game and accomplishing her own goals.
Hobbies: Swimming, DIY crafts, apocalyptic movies, drawing, fitness, surfing, her diet
(Also, I may create a new relationship chart with all four of them after I get feedback, so stay tuned!!!)

I enjoy the reasoning behind why all four might kill their classmates. I especially enjoy Marinos characterization here, since it seems like he’ll be a good source of conflict in the game.FlockOfHens wrote: ↑Mon Nov 27, 2023 12:30 amAfter a conversation between writing two characters being paired romanticly and the decision to give Storm to another handler when the time comes, I have finally come up with the four characters to use, two of which may have been concept characters combined:FlockOfHens wrote: ↑Tue Nov 21, 2023 6:59 am Okay, so everyone has already heard of Beau, Storm; and Inessa, but what about some of these characters???

For the other three, I don’t have much to say, though I am looking forward to hearing about why Remi had to quit the swim team.
Hey! So I've posted about her before, but she's gone through some more detailing and here might be a good place to post.
Ginger 'Gigi' Peck- A sleazy rich girl! She does things like sneak into casinos with a fake ID, smoke, and drink. Naturally, she's a bit of a party girl type. Although she is rich, she is streetsmart, reads people easily, and is a good liar. She also indulges in the fashion and shopping culture of Vegas! Although she does a lot of questionable things, she's actually on her best behavior on-campus; she's a good student with a clean disciplinary record, and even has a student government position (not sure what yet). She's a bit socially conscious and somewhat of a social climber, and is smart enough to know that staying out of trouble is a good way to avoid suspicion about what she does. That said, she has a notable risk-taking side of her personality, which is why she loves gambling. She's generally pretty self-assured, and the sort of person with a more dominant bent personality-wise. Aside from what I've listed, she, as a rich kid, goes on hunting trips with her folks and thus has some outdoor knowledge, enough to be a part of the Outdoor Rattlers. Her taste for drinking means she also has a casual interest in bartending and mixology, so there's a chance she's mixed something up for you. She's admittedly me having fun with Vegas stereotypes in some ways.
Feel feel to comment on her, ask questions, etc.!
