Color In Your Cheeks
Day 11, just before announcement. PM for entry because of reasons.
"Yeah..." Shawn added, lurking behind Matthew with his shotgun in hand, lightly scratching at the plaster on his nose.
When the waterfront proved to be a bust, the mountain seemed like the next logical spot to look for any signs of rescue. He remembered the view from the hot springs being pretty impressive, probably the best on the island now that the pass was off limits. If there was something going on out there, the springs was likely their best shot at spotting it.
Well, here they were, and still no signs of rescue. What they found however made the journey worthwhile nevertheless.
Shawn remained ambivalent about Matt's desire to hunt players, especially when they still didn't know what happened to their hosts. It was part of the reason he suggested they leave town, where they couldn't lay low for five minutes without Matt shooting someone. Salem, Evie, Juanita... He honestly didn't give a damn whether they walked free or not, long as he could survive this mess himself.
There were however two exceptions, one of whom was Katelyn Graves. Rescue or not, he wouldn't discourage an opportunity to end her. Not out of any misguided sense of justice, mind you. He just wanted a bit of good old fashioned payback.
"Sounded like you guys were having quite the pool party up here."

California knew better than to trust Matthew, although he had managed to pick up a partner at some stage. There was a distinct feeling in California’s stomach that they didn’t want to speak to her out of any real concern.
In fact, the last time she had been with Matthew he has been talking about how he had killed Ren. She had considered stabbing him with her ice pick at the time, and she again found her hand reaching into her pocket.
Truthfully she wasn’t sure if she had done the right thing letting him go. He had been so proud of what he had done to Ren and he’d gone on to kill more people, but she couldn’t vouch for who deserved it or not. Then again she had been the one who thought Kitty needed to be stopped, so maybe she was just a hypocrite.
Hypocrisy or not, she’d taken no pleasure in Kitty’s demise. Her only feeling was relief that it was all over.
“Huh, what?”
She looked over at Shawn, feeling a strange delay between hearing what he’d asked and her brain processing the words.
“Uhhh no, not really.”

"Well, to me, it sure sounded like someone was talking about how a cute little thing didn't deserve getting something better. And well, there's only one 'cute little thing'," Matthew made quotation marks with his fingers, not believing for a second that Katelyn could be described as either of those, "here on this island that's been getting better things. Our mutual friend with a grenade launcher and God knows what else. So if she's up there, frolicking in the goddamn hotspring as if she hasn't killed ten goddamn people... well, you get my point."
He couldn't just let that go. So many innocents had been killed by Katelyn, and if she was here, now, taking her out while she was relaxing and had her guard down was probably easier than a straight up fight.
Still, he remembered what had happened the last time he'd questioned one of her friends about her whereabouts. His ears still rang from that goddamn grenade. Well, now it was both of them, what with the second grenade at the whole Valentin debacle, but hey, he'd still nailed two today.
"So, if she's up there..." Matthew glanced back at Shawn, making sure he was still all good with stuff. He could tell that Cali was tense, in the same sorta vein that Ren had been, and he couldn't help but be a little suspicious at that.
"Well, y'know."

Shawn remained quiet throughout, letting Matt do all the talking. No point interjecting when his ally was doing a fine job taking the lead on this one.
He did however take the opportunity to reminisce, thinking back to the last time he found himself on that mountain path. Felt like an eternity since his last encounter at the springs, back when his hands were clean and the bodycount was relatively low. Hell, he was pretty sure this was the same spot where he tossed Calvin's belongings, Shawn curiously peering over the road's edge.
Sure enough, there was Ethan's crumpled form at the very bottom. Looked rather tame now, compared to the shit he'd come across the past 24 hours alone.
His eyes returned to Matt's just in time to meet his glance, nodding in approval before slowly wandering to his ally's side, making sure Cali couldn't just rush past them.
Cali... Seriously, who the hell names their kid after a state? Or a city, for that matter?

California eyes followed Shawn as he stalked around to her side. They had asked her questions about Kitty and where she was. But she doubted that they had positive intentions, in fact, she knew that they didn’t.
Matthew wanted to kill her. He’d made that abundantly clear. She wasn’t sure if he wanted to do it because it was the right thing to do or because it would satisfy his ego. He wanted to be the good guy with the gun; collateral damage wasn’t a concern.
It made her nervous, she was unsure of what Matthews reaction would be to the news that his chance to be the hero had been taken away from him. After all Kai had already killed Kitty and that left Matthew with nothing.
“She isn’t up there,” She said, as she turned her head to try and keep both Matthew and Shawn in her vision. “She’s dead, Kai killed her.”
California didn’t want to say more, in case anyone else or the terrorists were listening, but she knew that Matthew wouldn’t just accept her initial explanation. Her feet shifted back.
“He wants to bury her body.”

"Bullshit." The first thought that went through his head, and came out of his mouth, was that word. Bullshit. Fresh and steaming. Kai wouldn't kill Katelyn even if she had a gun to his head and a knife to his throat. He'd been helping her out this whole time — they'd even killed together, Chiara and Derek. So the idea that he would just change course, put a bullet in her, was absolutely fucking ludicrous to Matthew. Even before he started defending a killer, he had been one of the chief simps of Katelyn. So no, that was bullshit.
"Even if she's dead, there's more people up there. I heard two goddamn voices. So don't fucking bullshit me." Matthew snarled, the way he looked at Cali exposing just how deeply frustrated he was. He had killed two goddamn people today — well, only one was confirmed but whoever he'd hit at the church was probably dead by now — and while that was good, he now had a chance to hit the queen sitting at the top of the ranks. Maybe there was a little hint of denial in there too, but... no. No. Cali was lying. Siding with Katelyn and Kai.
"What, is your bro up there too? A little killer circlejerk?" Maybe he was just being mean now, but...
"Hey, Shawn. You still got the, uh... stuff we got from Karin?" An idea was beginning to form. A terrible idea, but it was an idea nonetheless.

Shawn blinked. Did he hear her correctly? Had Cali just claimed that Katelyn was...
"Dead?" he asked aloud, completely thrown by Cali's little revelation. "What?"
Matt appeared unconvinced, incensed even. Shawn himself wasn't sure what to make of such a bizarre claim. Wasn't Kai one of the key players in Kitty's little scooby gang of sycophants? If Cali was lying, why claim that Kitty was killed by one of the few assholes out there who didn't want her dead?
He was too busy trying to make sense of it all when Matt asked his question, Shawn's eyes furrowing in confusion before widening in realisation. He wasn't planning on doing THAT, was he?
Oh, fuck, he was totally planning on doing that wasn't he.
"Uuh, yeah, got it right here..." he replied with a hint of hesitation in his voice, patting his dufflebag with a raised brow. "You, uh... Sure that'll be necessary?"

She didn’t know what exactly they were talking about or what would be necessary, but California was sure it wouldn’t be good. They way they were talking and moving were signs that were too obvious to ignore.
Whatever their exact intentions were didn’t matter. California didn’t had many options, they were going to be faster than she was, they had better weapons. The only chance she would have had was if she had seen them coming, but distracted as she had been she hadn’t noticed them.
Now they were upon her, circling like hungry wolves. Matthew wanted to do something to her and it was enough to give Shawn pause and make him uncertain.
It was a sign and an opportunity.
She couldn’t stay, and she had a small window to run.
So she ran, trying to will her broken body into a stumbling gate in an attempt to get away.

Cali twisted around and tried to run up towards where Kitty and presumably that other guy was (who was that anyway? Kai?) and really, that was good enough for him.
Shifting his hold on the rifle to hold it like a bat as he chased after her, Matthew lunged at her with a swing and hit a home run on the back of her head, knocking her off of her feet and onto the ground. Right. He'd wanted to do this the easy, quiet way, but fuck it. Katelyn's little grenade launcher wouldn't mean shit if a buddy would die if she used it, so he probably had as much time as he needed to get the info out of her. Maybe he'd, uh, actually use it. Maybe he'd just threaten. A drill whirring by your ear should be good enough.
"Shawn, drill and handcuffs. Now." He barked, glaring down at the sprawled girl. Was she knocked out or just knocked on her ass, Matthew couldn't tell, but she probably wasn't in much of a condition to get going now anyway. Shawn's hesitation had... well, look, she'd probably have bailed and ran anyway, but now it was slightly more difficult. Fuck. Alright. Glancing up the mountain, towards that haze of steam that might be concealing a grenade launcher, Matthew forced his gaze back onto the person sprawled out in front of him.

"W-W-Wai-ah-uh... Fuck"
Shawn was never keen on violence, even after having long accepted its necessity in a game like this. It disgusted him, even when it was clean and to the point. So the thought of utilizing torture as a methadology never even crossed his mind.
Well. Okay, that wasn't entirely true. He had briefly mused over the idea as a means of sabotaging the competition, after seeing the results of Aracelis's bat becoming acquainted with Przemek's face. Why kill your enemies and draw attention, when you can cripple them and let someone else do it for you?
Shawn never gave the idea serious consideration however, and at this point he and Matt were in too deep for it to be a viable option. He doubted that there was any info they could extract from her that the threat of death wouldn't already yield. Anything more than that was needlessly messy, and thoroughly unnecessary. Better to just kill her and be done with it.
Did that mean he was willing to stand up to Matt? Put himself between his ally and their latest mark?
"H-here" he replied, shakily unzipping his bag and handing Matt the power drill, before turning his head to Cali with a subtle shrug as he rummaged for the cuffs.

“Hold it!”
Marshall already had the gun raised before he shouted, and he’d pointed it squarely at Matthew as he took a few steps further forward.
How long had it taken everything to go to shit? Exactly the time it took to stop June from following Kai up a mountain. He should have learned from Chloé. Nothing could happen for days, but once he turned away--
He’d heard the voices once he’d let go of June, but been delayed in getting over there because he’d stopped by his bag to wonder if he needed the gun at all. Then he’d heard, clear as anything, ‘drill and handcuffs.’ From there, he knew a gun had never been more necessary.
Though he was sure he must have heard wrong. Because what kind of monster would ask for a drill and handcuffs, even if the game was still going?
Apparently… the answer was Matthew. Marshall’s eyes moved down to the drill, then to California sprawled out on the ground, then back up to Matthew’s face, and he felt such revulsion that he couldn’t put it into words.
“B-back off,” Marshall whispered, voice shaking. He inhaled, then bellowed, “Back off now! What the FUCK is wrong with you?!”

June was quiet for a long time, eyes almost glassed over, still in Marshall's grasp. She knew Marshall had spoken to her after, said calming, validating words, whatever they were, but not much registered after Kai's answer to her, all her righteous anger sublimating into nothing, her mind enveloped in the mind-numbing static that followed in the wake of what just happened. There was a yawning void within her, the gap between her realizing what she'd just done, who she'd just victimized, and the eventual endpoint when she'd be able to name and identify the emotions developing within her, what she felt, how she was supposed to respond, how she was supposed to punish herself.
Her stupor ended when Marshall released her. The air felt feverish now, a paradox in the arctic chill of this island. It felt feverish, it felt sweltering, it felt dangerous. Something bad was about to happen, she could see it in the way Marshall moved, how he retrieved his gun (he had a gun?). And then, she heard the same thing Marshall had heard, 'drill and handcuffs,' stern tone, Matthew's voice, one of the few Republicans in Salem, bully, cop-in-waiting, Matthew Bell, repeat killer, Matthew Bell was here, and he was asking for a drill and handcuffs.
California wasn't here. California was over there. Matthew Bell was going to use a drill and handcuffs on California Fox.
She rushed over, right alongside Marshall.
California hadn't even killed anyone. She hadn't even done anything, she was just there, and they had her all beaten like that?
She saw the rifle in Matthew's grip, and some part of her knew that she, without weapons, down one arm, she out of all the people here should've been the quietest of them all.
But, they were so close to the end. The terrorists were being blown up, Kitty was dead, they were so close to the end and she still had to deal with all this?
So, she screamed, after Marshall, "SHE HASN'T EVEN KILL- THE- WE'RE ABOUT TO GET OUT OF HERE AND YOU'RE STILL OUT HERE KILLING? ENOUGH! THAT'S ENOUGH!"

California could hardly make out what was being yelled through the ringing reverberating through her skull. Matthews blow to the back of her head had sent her sprawling forward and her forehead and right cheek had absorbed most of the force from the rock path.
She could feel the grazes throbbing and the pinpricks of blood forming on her face as she Kat on her face, trying to reorient herself to where she was. After your first concussion you became more susceptible to them, that was what her doctor had said after her car crash. California hadn’t given the information much weight at the time, there were other things she had been concerned about, her back, her physical therapy, the depression she developed, the weight she gained due to the depression. A head injury was bad sure, but she’d been told it would be an issue if she did sports, but she’d never done any sports, so it wasn’t as big an issue.
But as she lay there realising that she’d been knocked out again, if only briefly, and that she couldn’t remember where she was immediately, her concerns about her head trauma grew. She needed Kai, he’d know what to do. Because she didn’t know if the shouting voices would be much help.
With difficulty she instructed her body to roll over and managed to get onto her side, above her she could see Matthew and Shawn, so her attempt to escape had failed. She reached up and pulled herself back somewhat then looked around at the shouting. Marshall and the other girl—June—the one who had yelled at Kai. Marshall had a gun drawn and aimed at her two attackers.
“Marshall,” She slurred, through the painful haze of Matthews blow to her head. “Help me,”

Just before he could get the handcuffs around her, the drill whirring close to her ear, two voices cut through the air and brought an end to that idea. Dropping the drill with a clatter onto the ground, Matthew grasped his rifle firmly and glared up at the two newcomers. Marshall and June. Marshall had a gun. June had her voice, and was making very good use of it, like a fucking banshee or some shit. He didn't have any time for this. He'd killed enough people today. What was two more removed from the equation, Matthew thought? It was either two player-adjacent killed if he was still talking about hunting players, and well... it was two less he'd have to fight for the crown if he got that far, or if the army didn't show up. Who knew what the fuck was happening with that.
Glancing back at Shawn, Matthew gave him the nod. Through everything, he'd been ride or die, even when bullets were coming at them. Didn't make many people like that, he'd probably have died if not for his bro a long time ago. When it came down to it, they were a good goddamn team. A team versus a team, and Matthew didn't think that his was very beatable.
"Where's Katelyn, huh!?" Glaring back at the two assembled, Matthew raised the rifle and fired, starting to backpedal as he pulled the bolt back and loaded a new cartridge in. Shit, maybe he shoulda pulled his pistol. Marshall had some old ass revolver, so it'd outfight him. As it stood, this was a WW2 lookin-ass gunfight.

Shit.
Shawn was in the middle of handing Matt the cuffs when Cali's friends showed up, quickly pocketing them before raising his shotgun. Should have figured they hadn't wandered off that far, a bead of sweat dripping from his brow as his eyes darted between them.
Neither of them were Kai or Katelyn, much to his surprise. Instead it was Marshall - the prettyboy with a ghastly grin - and... June? The fuck was she doing here? Shawn had written her off as dead ever since her fall back at the research station, it was only now that he realised that her name never got listed in the announcements. How the hell did she manage to outlive the rest of Dickie's group?
Whatever, didn't matter. What did matter was that he now found himself in yet another clusterfuck, his lips curling into snarl as he glared at the back of Matt's head. All Shawn had wanted since that morning was for them to lay low and avoid trouble, but noooo, they had to fucking go after Katelyn and the other players. Couldn't go five minutes without Matt getting them into one shitshow after another, all so that he could satisfy that big dick ego of his. He just couldn't stand the idea that the marines or whoever were doing a better job screwing over Danny than he could ever hope to achieve.
The snarl dispersed the moment he saw Matt's head turning, gulping and nodding back in response. He didn't think Matt would back down so easily, especially when they still had the advantage. Like it or not, they had a firefight on their hands.
So fucking be it. Looks like tomorrow's announcement was going to be a zesty one.
"SUCK IT!" he yells, before snapping off a shot in Marshall's direction as he scrambled for cover. "Game ain't over till the fat lady sings!"
